Ron Zook is the worst coach (1 Viewer)

I hate to hate. . . but probably the worst decision I have seen in a long time. Unless the kicker had a broken leg, there was no excuse for going for it on 4th down and 4 yards at OSU's 15 or so yard line down 10 points. You need two scores. Everyone will be talking about this the rest of the day.

Good teams take care of business on their home field.

Won't hate on Zook after the Ron Turner era. No one will ever be as incompetent as that guy as a head coach.

I saw this story last week, so I have to disagree with the OP.
If you are the head coach, how do you not know the score of the game? Seriously.Wouldn't you think that would be something he might want to know? It's not like he even has to do the math . . .
My favorite part is that he didn't even know if his team was winning or losing.
He's a joke. You can spend a while coming up with different stupid things he's done. When they played Iowa in 2007 Iowa threw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 10 from their own 40, there was a holding penalty and Zook accepted, they got the first down on 3 and 20.

He's a great recruiter, but the worst actual coach I can ever remember seeing. Once again, more proof that these guys aren't nearly as good at what they do as people give them credit for.

:goodposting: Illini fans should start a firezook.com website . . . .

A terrible call to be sure (I was sitting with a bunch of Illini alumns watching the game), but not the only terrible call in the Big 10 today. How about Michigan trailing Michigan State 21-14 with about 7 minutes to go at the Spartan 11, 4th and inches -- and instead of just rushing Robinson for the first down, they drop him back and he's sacked on a blitz that they have missed picking up ALL DAY, and the ball goes over on downs. Without that score (even a field goal), Robinson later throws a hurried pick to the house.

Well the Florida fans started that site the day the guy was hired there. Seems fair :lol:Zook does a lot of inexplicable things but he recruits well and this balances out to be one of the better coaches we've had in recent years. His brain farts probably serve to make him less attractive to bigger program (losing Mackovic to Texas comes to mind) which is sorta good and bad.At least he's not boring  -QG

I was upset, because I was hopeful Illinois stayed around top 15 so when the Badgers came in there in about a month and kicked their asses, it'd beef up Wisconsin's resume (they don't play for a month, so who knows what happens until then, just saying though). That being said, yes, it was an atrocious play call. He had an idiotic, bewildered look on his face when the 4th down pass came up incomplete. To my knowledge, Illinois has a good kicker, and he had his helmet on and seemed ready to go on the sidelines. Terrible, terrible call.

Florida fans are starting to say the same thing about Wil Muschamp.

Exactly. The KEY to Zook is just to mute the mic on his headset. He'll recruit, just make sure he has ZERO input on the offense and defense in game and we're good. It really was an AWFUL decision. Awful.

Focusing on just that 4th quarter decision really misses the mark.

His team lost to an opponent whose passing stats for the entire game were 1/4, 17 yards.

That is simply inexcusable.

The game must have been worse than the score because Oh St did not even complete a pass until 13 mins left in the 4th and yet they led 17-0? 228 total yards and they still won?

There's 1:20 or so left in the game and Illini have 285 yards total offense? I'd say it's easier to get 4 then score a TD from the around the 10 yard line than get an onsides and try to score a TD from around the 50. If ILL gets the onsides then going for the FG from there seems to make more sense?

By the way having his team - Illinois - at 6-0 for the first time since the early 50's is nothing to apologize for either.

I didn't see the game, but I know before Zook, Illinois was touching any top 25 rankings like they have when he's been there. Look at the Prospects that have come out of there since hes became coach(Benn Mendy and Vontae Davis to name a few). I dont watch enough to know about his in game playcalling (you guys all pretty much saying the same bad things would lead me to believe your right), but I would imagine the AD is still very happy with the decision to hire him in general.

Illinois football is dead to me. Time to join the 99.9999% of this country that doesn't know they have a team.
