Totally agree. What about a 6-person family? How about a 6-person family with out of town extended family that comes to stay over long weekends on occasion?I recognize the burden you face trying to find a "great neighborhood" in one of the richest areas in the world. However, 2k is more than enough room for a four-person family. What's good enough, and for whom? For me, it's nice, the kitchen looks dated , but mostly 2k Sqft seems tight for a big family.Oh and I should have mentioned that's on the bad side of town, closer to a not so great neighborhood. There have been a bunch of break ins there in recent years, so the real estate is cheap. That's not good enough? One of the highest end towns on LI, about an hour door to door commute to Manhattan, about a cool million gets you just over 2000sqft in an oldish house.

So that's a cool mil for a 2k Sqft house in a place where you might not be so comfortable raising your family. And yet still an hour commute from Manhattan.
I don't think this is strange. Personally I wish I didn't work in Manhattan, but I basically don't have much of a choice unless I want to take a substantial pay cut.I know I'm strange for not loving Manhattan, but I just don't. And if the choice is between $5 million for a condo in Manhattan, or $3.5 million for this in New Orleans, I don't see much of a choice.Couldn't agree with the bold any more. I wish I was in a different field to be completely honest. Unfortunately I'm basically trapped in NY. My only other real option would be San Francisco.I love New York, and really enjoyed the time I spent there, but am really glad I didn't build my career there. That said, if I won the lottery, I'd buy a place in Hawaii and a place in Manhattan, no question.
If I won the powerball, I'd def buy a nice $5-$10MM condo in Manhattan, however there is no chance it would be my primary residence.
It sounds like making $750K per year where you are is roughly equivalent to making $60K per year where I am, once you factor in cost of living. Have you adopted a couple homeless people or something?Totally agree. What about a 6-person family? How about a 6-person family with out of town extended family that comes to stay over long weekends on occasion?
Turns out you don't just have to kick back and hope the stork swings by your house. If you want more kids, typically there is something you can do to make that happen.Have you adopted a couple homeless people or something?Totally agree. What about a 6-person family? Anyway, #### that with the extended family staying over for a long weekend. That is one of the main reasons to have a smaller house, so that they do not do that exact thing.

Sure, but while not directly on St. Charles, it is only a few blocks away and certainly not worth a $1/2M difference to meLocation, location, location.gianmarco said:I'll take this instead in NOLAHenry Ford said:I know I'm strange for not loving Manhattan, but I just don't. Still never got one, and don't have a need for one, so won't likely submit an application for a permit for one.Update on the dumpster?
If you want to pay me a dollar to not start every thread I otherwise would start here, I'm totally cool with that. Can't we all send Otis a $1 so he can pay the stupid application fee and proceed to buying his new $5 million home?
Good, that was crazy.Still never got one, and don't have a need for one, so won't likely submit an application for a permit for one.Update on the dumpster?
Wasn't aware you're going to have two more kids. Really don't get why you'd encourage family to stay with you like that. They can stay in a hotel or with all these other family members you can't leave Long Island for.Otis said:Totally agree. What about a 6-person family? The general rule of thumb that we use here is that you'd need to make 2.5x what you make here if you want to live a comparable lifestyle in NYC. I'd make more in NYC for sure, but definitely not THAT much more.Henry Ford said:It sounds like making $750K per year where you are is roughly equivalent to making $60K per year where I am, once you factor in cost of living. Yep, that's the street. Word is the neighborhood hired Isreali military to guard the street after Katrina.Sure, I mean, if you have the 5.25 million to spend.
Why would my wife's family stay with my family? That's an odd approach. Sure, I guess we could be jackholes and ask them to stay in a hotel.Wasn't aware you're going to have two more kids. Sounds awesome. Seriously.Wow....those house prices and taxes are insane. I bought a 3100 sqft house, 4 beds 3.5 baths, on a .4 acre built in 2002 for $230k and pay $2600 in taxes.
With the money you'd save on not living there, you could charter a jet every weekend to see the family.Brother, no offense taken. It's absurd. If I didn't have all our extended family here we would probably leave. Granted jobs here tend to pay a bunch more, but pound for pound not enough more to counter the pricing. It's silly. Just a reality I have accepted given that we are close with family and there is more value to us in that than in a bigger yard or nicer kitchen.Otis...sometimes you make me jealous, othertimes you make me appreciate what I have...usually the latter (no offense intended) Especially in this case. I'm sitting on 0.50 acre fenced in yard (no longer legal to do) in a great school system. 3000 sq ft, finished basement, play structure in the back, and it cost a fraction...maybe a tenth of what you are looking at.
NY just doesn't seem worth it.
Sorry mom and dad-in-law, I didnt want to buy a 2 million dollar house just so we would have enough room for you to sleep over occasionally. How about i put you up in a 5 star hotel instead? Cause if i'm saving a million dollars, you can stay in that hotel every weekend for the next 20 years and I'm still coming out ahead. Why would my wife's family stay with my family? That's an odd approach. Sure, I guess we could be jackholes and ask them to stay in a hotel.

I'm not mad. I'm happy for you.Why are you so mad about me moving?
Xanadu.Living in NJ, property taxes are a frequent topic. I have yet to see a valid reason for such ridiculous amounts. The streets of these towns should be paved in gold and the kids should all ride to schools in limos. It is a wonder where the money goes.
I just literally choked on my water when I clicked on my link. My dad now lives very near there*, and in a much bigger house on a much larger property. I knew it couldn't be cheap, but apparently father woz is doing way better than I had any idea of.http://www.trulia.com/property/1026095548-140-Union-St-Montclair-NJ-07042
Look at this old and small $860k house in North Jersey. $33,000 in property taxes... Just to give you an example if you want an under one hour door to door commute from NJ to NYC, this is what you're dealing with.

No joke. In my area 3100 4bd/3bth on .5 acre would run you 4-500kSounds awesome. Seriously.Wow....those house prices and taxes are insane. I bought a 3100 sqft house, 4 beds 3.5 baths, on a .4 acre built in 2002 for $230k and pay $2600 in taxes.

Do you have any idea how long it took him to locate your current residence so he could peep through your windows at night? And now you are going to make all that effort worthless.
