Ruling re: my lame town: is a POD a "dumpster" (1 Viewer)

One of the highest end towns on LI, about an hour door to door commute to Manhattan, about a cool million gets you just over 2000sqft in an oldish house.

That's not good enough?
What's good enough, and for whom? For me, it's nice, the kitchen looks dated , but mostly 2k Sqft seems tight for a big family.Oh and I should have mentioned that's on the bad side of town, closer to a not so great neighborhood. There have been a bunch of break ins there in recent years, so the real estate is cheap.

So that's a cool mil for a 2k Sqft house in a place where you might not be so comfortable raising your family. And yet still an hour commute from Manhattan.
I recognize the burden you face trying to find a "great neighborhood" in one of the richest areas in the world. However, 2k is more than enough room for a four-person family.
Totally agree. What about a 6-person family? How about a 6-person family with out of town extended family that comes to stay over long weekends on occasion?

I love New York, and really enjoyed the time I spent there, but am really glad I didn't build my career there. That said, if I won the lottery, I'd buy a place in Hawaii and a place in Manhattan, no question.
Couldn't agree with the bold any more. I wish I was in a different field to be completely honest. Unfortunately I'm basically trapped in NY. My only other real option would be San Francisco.

If I won the powerball, I'd def buy a nice $5-$10MM condo in Manhattan, however there is no chance it would be my primary residence.
I know I'm strange for not loving Manhattan, but I just don't. And if the choice is between $5 million for a condo in Manhattan, or $3.5 million for this in New Orleans, I don't see much of a choice.
I don't think this is strange. Personally I wish I didn't work in Manhattan, but I basically don't have much of a choice unless I want to take a substantial pay cut.

It sounds like making $750K per year where you are is roughly equivalent to making $60K per year where I am, once you factor in cost of living. I think you might come out ahead taking the pay cut.

Have you adopted a couple homeless people or something?

Anyway, #### that with the extended family staying over for a long weekend. That is one of the main reasons to have a smaller house, so that they do not do that exact thing.

Turns out you don't just have to kick back and hope the stork swings by your house. If you want more kids, typically there is something you can do to make that happen.

I don't mind the in laws visiting. I just am not thrilled with already struggling to get a toddler and newborn through the night hours and then the morning routine while we have outsiders sleeping on the couches in the main rooms in the house.

I'll take this instead in NOLA

Sure, but while not directly on St. Charles, it is only a few blocks away and certainly not worth a $1/2M difference to me :)

Can't we all send Otis a $1 so he can pay the stupid application fee and proceed to buying his new $5 million home?

If you want to pay me a dollar to not start every thread I otherwise would start here, I'm totally cool with that.

Wasn't aware you're going to have two more kids. Really don't get why you'd encourage family to stay with you like that. They can stay in a hotel or with all these other family members you can't leave Long Island for.

Those St. Charles homes are beautiful. I'd love to own in a nice part of New Orleans.

Audubon Place is the street to have property on.

Sure, I mean, if you have the 5.25 million to spend.

The general rule of thumb that we use here is that you'd need to make 2.5x what you make here if you want to live a comparable lifestyle in NYC. I'd make more in NYC for sure, but definitely not THAT much more.

I think the solution to this thread is to put in the application fee, sell the house, & move the family into the Pod in the driveway.

:moneybag:

Wow....those house prices and taxes are insane. I bought a 3100 sqft house, 4 beds 3.5 baths, on a .4 acre built in 2002 for $230k and pay $2600 in taxes.

Why would my wife's family stay with my family? That's an odd approach. Sure, I guess we could be jackholes and ask them to stay in a hotel.

Property taxes..... yeah, they'll kill you. Although to be fair to the leaders of my fine state the huge amount of property taxes we pay go to things like...

Otis...sometimes you make me jealous, othertimes you make me appreciate what I have...usually the latter (no offense intended) Especially in this case. I'm sitting on 0.50 acre fenced in yard (no longer legal to do) in a great school system. 3000 sq ft, finished basement, play structure in the back, and it cost a fraction...maybe a tenth of what you are looking at.

NY just doesn't seem worth it.
Brother, no offense taken. It's absurd. If I didn't have all our extended family here we would probably leave. Granted jobs here tend to pay a bunch more, but pound for pound not enough more to counter the pricing. It's silly. Just a reality I have accepted given that we are close with family and there is more value to us in that than in a bigger yard or nicer kitchen.
With the money you'd save on not living there, you could charter a jet every weekend to see the family.

Sorry mom and dad-in-law, I didnt want to buy a 2 million dollar house just so we would have enough room for you to sleep over occasionally. How about i put you up in a 5 star hotel instead? Cause if i'm saving a million dollars, you can stay in that hotel every weekend for the next 20 years and I'm still coming out ahead.

Oh that's the only reason I'm buying a bigger house. I forgot I had said that.

Also I never said I was spending 2MM.

Why are you so mad about me moving?

Living in NJ, property taxes are a frequent topic. I have yet to see a valid reason for such ridiculous amounts. The streets of these towns should be paved in gold and the kids should all ride to schools in limos. It is a wonder where the money goes.
Xanadu.

Look at this old and small $860k house in North Jersey. $33,000 in property taxes... Just to give you an example if you want an under one hour door to door commute from NJ to NYC, this is what you're dealing with.

ETA: in a safe community with a good school district
I just literally choked on my water when I clicked on my link. My dad now lives very near there*, and in a much bigger house on a much larger property. I knew it couldn't be cheap, but apparently father woz is doing way better than I had any idea of.

For a few years in property taxes he could buy a sweet vacation home where I live and look at college girls' boobs all day and probably be around some grandchildren. But apparently living where the weather and traffic are ####ty is better.

HEY LOOK AT ME!

Do you have any idea how long it took him to locate your current residence so he could peep through your windows at night? And now you are going to make all that effort worthless. He will have to start all over again.

Sounds awesome. Seriously.
No joke. In my area 3100 4bd/3bth on .5 acre would run you 4-500k
No surprise to me. Sounds like that is most of the world. Which is why my local reality is really frustrating.
Well over a Million here and the half acre is hard to find.
