Rumor: Packers Brass At Odds? (1 Viewer)

According to Weekend Kickoff on Sirius Radio there's a rumor the Packers brass are at odds about who to take with the fifth pick. According to the rumor, the offensive coaches are pushing hard for Vernon Davis while the defensive coaches are pushing hard for A.J. Hawk.

Ted Thompson couldn't be reached for comment because he was too busy calculating future interest rates for the millions he's been sitting on under the cap this off-season.

Make the niners break the bank for Davis like Detroit did to Cleveland for Winslow. ;)
If the Niners truly covet Davis and they become convinced the Packers are going to take him at 5, would they be willing to offer the 6th and 22nd picks in order to make sure they get their guy? That's some food for thought.

passing on Hawk for Davis would be a big mistake, IMO.
I think so too, and really hope Thompson does as well. It would be great to slid down a spot and still grab Hawk. Even if San Fran was only willing to throw in #68 or #84 to make it happen.

Your wet dreams differ from mine. ;)

wouldn't the 49ers be just as happy to get hawk?
:hot: No, they must have Davis and pay the price!

;)
Seriously, they should be since OLB is arguably one of their greatest needs. However, there should be a decent OLB available at #22, so that could make them consider moving up a spot for Davis if all the rumors are true.

with the 49ers running a 3-4 defense, I don't think Hawk should be high too high on their priority list. He would certainly be an upgrade, but he'd likely play ILB for them and that's not a huge need with Smith and Ulbrich in place.

if the Packers steal Davis from them, they'd probably be smart to try trading down.

I still think the Saints should try trading down to #5 with the Packers with the Pack taking Mario Williams and the Saints taking Hawk.

why ILB for them?

He's not a 3-4 OLB.I like Hawk, but #5 is awfully high for an LB. Davis has as much upside as anyone in the draft. If GB went Davis, there would still be a starting caliber LB waiting for them at the top of the 2nd (with the depth of this LB class).

playing Hawk at OLB in a 3-4 would be a bit of a waste, IMO. He's ideally suited to play WLB in a 4-3 where he can roam free and create havoc rather than matching up against OTs as an OLB in a 3-4. He's certainly got the pass rush skills and athleticism to help replace Julian Peterson. I just don't think that position would be the best use of his talent/skills. He's probably slightly undersized for the 3-4 OLB spot as well.

This is what I'd like to see the Packers do. What the Saints would want in return could be the sticking point.

Good points. Trading down a few spots and grabing someone like Wimbley would probably be a much better fit for them. Kind of why I think it's more important for San Fran to get Davis, is that with the way Manny Lawson's stock seems to have risen, I think he could be a nice pick for them at #22.

Packer's moving up for Mario would be OK with me as long as they don't give up too much. Mario remains #1 on my list of who I'd like to see Green Bay get. I'd really like to see them acquire more picks though since Thompson hasn't been real active in FA.

Dating back to 1980, 20 linebackers have been drafted in the top 5.Only two TEs in the history of the league have been top 5 picks, the last coming in 1972.

If anything, history suggests taking Davis, not Hawk, would be the unusual move.

The Niners are in a great possition because I don't think that they wouldn't want anyone of Mario, Hawk, Davis and most likely one of those guys will be there at number 6

WWBFD?  Sorry about TO Mr. Farve, would you stay for VD?
I dont think a case of the  would be a good bargaining chip to make him want to stay.

If I'm GM of the Packers, after cutting Favre, I'd draft AJ Hawk, D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Mario Williams.

I wouldn't worry about a TE whatsoever... that particular position (TE) suffers the most man-hours of injury in the NFL - read an article about it the other day.
