Does anyone know the outlook on such an injury for a running back? I am sure there are varying degrees of this injury which would make a big difference, however... I was just wondering if there are any previous cases of this happening in the NFL That we can use as a gauge.

I agree. It sounds horrible, and I can't see how a running back in the NFL can make a quick reovery from a bruised kidney. I would imagine that there is a very real danger of critical injury.

From 2010, i think:

San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks will be out at least two weeks because of a lacerated kidney.

Brooks was hurt during Friday's morning practice. The injury originally was diagnosed as a bruised rib before tests revealed more extensive damage Saturday.
