Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Randall County, Texas, a television station in San Diego reported on Thursday.

Leaf, a former top pick by the San Diego Chargers, was indicted on seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance, and one count of burglary of a habitation, according to court records.

If convicted, the burglary charge carries a sentence of two to 20 years. The other counts could carry up to a two-year sentence in a state jail each, according to court records.

The Chargers chose Leaf out of Washington State with the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. He played in the NFL from 1998 to 2001.

He most recently coached football and golf at West Texas A&M University. He resigned after acknowledging he had asked a West Texas A&M player for a pill to help him deal with lingering pain from an injury Leaf had sustained during his NFL playing days, ESPN reported in November 2008.

Was the controlled substance an NFL contract?

It is almost like his whole mission in life was to screw up his life. Outside of those fallen into drug abuse, has there been anyone that has thrown away so many chances, opportunities and talent for absolutely no reason?

Ryan Leaf - Felon ?

Reminds me of one of my favorite verses....

Felonius my old friend

Step on in and let me shake your hand

So glad that you're here again

For one more time

Let your madness run with mine

Streets still unseen we'll find somehow

No time is better than now

Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into a Canyon apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.

"There were signs of a forced entry," Davis said. "A window in the back of the home was (damaged)."

The count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance alleges Leaf gave an individual a substance he said was Hydrocodone but was not that drug.

James Farren, Randall County criminal district attorney, said Leaf has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia, the Amarillo Globe-News reported.

Farren told the newspaper that efforts were under way to try to convince Leaf to return to the United States on his own.

"We have not found any evidence implicating anyone other than Mr. Leaf in this case ... but believe there's additional evidence implicating him in other events," Farren said. He would not elaborate.
The guy is a doosh and I don't care how long they put him in jail for, but this charge is ridiculous.

Opiate addiction has made many a "good" person do horrible things. I don't know if Leaf was ever a good guy(from most accounts, he wasn't), but for his family's sake, I hope he gets the help he obviously needs.

NFL | Leaf arrested Wednesday

Wed, 17 Jun 2009 15:30:24 -0700

The Associated Press reports former NFL QB Ryan Leaf was arrested in Washington Wednesday, June 17, on drug and burglary charges in Texas. Customs agents arrested him after he crossed the Canada-United States border.
Strange. I came across an interview with Keith Null, St louis 6th round draft pick. He had this to say about his former QB coach.
(On what it was like working with former San Diego Chargers QB Ryan Leaf)

"Coach Leaf was a great guy. He just knows the game. As everyone knows, he tore it up. That was his thing. So it was great to have him around, have that experience and he really taught me a lot. It's great to have somebody who's done it and who's been successful at it. It was a blessing to have him there."

I though that Leaf married a charger girl and IIRC invested his money quiet well and had college coaching gigs. But man that hillbilly herion will mess you up

Later chump!

And the saga continues, such a shame.http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8854058/ryan-leaf-booted-treatment-center-prison

Obviously there are performance differences already, but I wonder if Indy is going to win the lottery so to speak with their latest #1 pick. If RG3 ends up having injury issues and his potential is never reached while Indy gets another 10-12 years of perennial probowl QB play. San Diego made a trade to swap with AZ in what turned to be a franchise crippling mistake to pick Leaf. If Griffin's knee doesn't live up to the two extra #1s then it's a pretty interesting parallel to their choice of Manning over Leaf.

The major difference is that the Redskins have the money to get players.

Quite a lot of 'ifs' there, Sweenie. What if Luck is in a car crash tomorrow and RGIII is a top QB for the next 15 years? It's ridiculous to project that far out at this point.

Just so you know, when people use "ifs" then that means it's not a projection. I just brought up an angle on Indy's last #1 pick, I wasn't projecting anything.
