4 years, $17.8 million, roughly $7 mil guaranteed for Randall Gay to move to the Saints, according to Schefter.

The Saints agreed to a four-year contract with Randall Gay, worth up to $17.6 million, according to a league source.

The deal is worth about $6.7 million in salary and bonuses over the first two years, with a chance to go up to $9 million, based on playing time.

Gay, who is from Brusly and played at LSU, made the Saints his first visit and his first priority in free agency. The Saints were likewise interested in the 25-year-old cornerback, targeting him as the best value at the position in free agency.

Cheap in today's market for a proven NFL starter. You have to love the Patriots bravado; they not only let expensive free agents walk, they let inexpensive starters go, too. Why on Earth wouldn't the Pats have signed Gay for that kind of contract?

Because they're trying to conserve cap space to give Moss the biggest possible contract offer and front-load it.

Maybe Moss is going to play defense too..

I do and don't like this signing for the Saints. Obviously a position of need and I honestly don't know much about Gay and his play (unintentional rhyme), but I hope he doesn't turn into another Jason David experiment. I'm always weary of players that are cut from top teams......

The quick answer is that NE did not consider Gay as a full time starter . . . so they didn't want to give him full-time starter's money. We can debate whether their position is accurate or not, but NE really has not run out to give too many people $4.5 million a year (average contract value). To that end, the only Pats players currently with cap hits of $4.5 million are:Brady $14.6 million (but I have heard they are trying to extend/rework his contract)Seymour $6.8 millionThomas $5.4 millionLight $5 millionTwo off seasons ago I thought NE misjudged the market and they really came up short in free agency. Last year they seemed to be far more aggressive and within days had bulked up the roster. This year they on the surface they again seem to be trying to work with old numbers and not current day contract values. The Pats are currently $22 million under the cap. If they don't sign Moss . . . who else is out there as impact players that could help them at their critcal points of need (CB, LB, WR)?

 Gay is not a starter. He started 9 games his rookie year due to injuries and then missed 2 years. He came this year and was mostly healthy but started only 3 games.Keep in mind, for those that like to bash Ellis Hobbs (I think he's fine as a #2), Gay could not beat out Hobbs for a starting job the last 2 years.
