Salt on cantaloupe is a delicious treat that I learned from my southern grandfather. The salt basically brings out the flavor of the melon so much so that even a regular old cantaloupe suddenly tastes like the best, juiciest cantaloupe you ever ate.

I have never tried it on watermelon - it never occurred to me - but now I look forward to trying it out.
Cantaloupe's taste ceiling is sweaty ass crack.
:goodposting:

Cantaloupe is terrible.

Cantaloupe, at its peak, is probably the sweetest fruit imaginable, so I can't understand how anyone would describe that taste as terrible. Any chance there's just not good cantaloupe in your area?

Or they aren't educated on buying a properly ripened cantaloupe.

I'm certain there's not good cantaloupe in my area. Or anyone's area.

I've never bought one. My mom, a cantaloupe lover, bought it all the time when I was young. I assume she knew a 'good' one.

How can anyone like one melon but not another? They're all sweet, juicy, refreshing and delicious.

Canaloupe tastes far different than watermelon, or even honey dew. Cantaloupe's got some kind of funk to it. Funk's not the right word, but something just tastes off.

I won't deny RUSF's claim that maybe I've never had a good one, but I'm not really buying either. I've eaten it on many occasions (now it's just out of morbid curiosity trying to figure out how people like it). The entire flavor profile is so wretched that I can't imagine the greatest cantaloupe on Earth being very good.

If the difference is like, say an Asian pear compared other types of apples and pears, then I'm sure of it. Other apples and pears are good, Asian pears just happen to be mind-blowingly good.

Fair enough.

Not a big cantaloupe fan, but Maryland 'loupes are pretty good.

I feel like this whole thread is shtick. Next week I'm gonna make up an obviously fake food combo of my own

I have never heard of salting watermelon until right this minute. However, I couldn't agree more with Wingnut in that salty + sweet = $.

I have a whole honeydew melon in my fridge right now. Thinking about cutting into it just so I can try this.

Never heard of salt on watermelon. Seemed pretty stupid so I decided to try it. Confirmed it's stupid. Why can't people eat food the way it is without seasoning the crap out of it? Watermelon is good as is.

Potato chips ground into fudge brownies.
not entirely fake :oldunsure:

At least, the ice cream truck here has a "Snack Food Chip" cookie: ground up potato chips, pretzels, and corn flakes, with chocolate chips, in a brown-sugar cookie. I had it with a scoop of Brown Butter & Candied Bacon ice cream. It was amazingly delicious.

I think we've identified your problem.

Triple-dog dare you to add some chili powder and lime juice too.

Too late. I went with the salt.

Liked it. Vote yes. Would definitely try the lime juice and chili powder, will do that tomorrow.

I can't stand any of them. Watermelon, cantelope, melon and I think I am missing one.

For the person that says no salt in the fruit. Have you ever put salt on a tomato before?

Cornbread is awesome.

Grapefruits are great and don't need sugar.

And no I am not fishing!!!

Just because you never heard of it, just means you live a sheltered food life. My grandparents ate salt on watermelon and both salt/pepper on cantaloupe. They knew their way around food - and it is delicious.

Go eat your WonderBread and Miracle Whip.

I like grapefruit too, then again I'm kind of a burnt toast fan.

Anyone else eat raw potatoes with salt on it as a kid? :oldunsure:

Might of just been something my mom did. She was pretty poor growing up. I don't think they could afford fire.

Just tried the cantelope - not good.

Why are there more wrong people than right ones?
The masses are afraid of what they don't know.

A lot of salt nazis here on the board - led by pork prince icon ( :) ) which is weird ...

Results seem artificially low - hell, something as potentially off-putting as oysters would likely get a higher score. (I love oysters)

Its because those that like salt on watermelon enjoy life and are out doing fun things and are too busy to hang out here and vote. Those that don't like it aren't very good at life and have nothing better to do but peruse the FFA and vote in polls.True story.

I have a feeling that the people who are afraid of it are picturing the people that like it, dousing the watermelon with salt. A light coating is all it takes. Heavenly.
