Sammy Morris used early and often (1 Viewer)

Was anyone surprised how many touches Sammy Morris got for the Pat's?

The box score doesn't really tell the entire story. Believe it or not a lot of Maroney's touches came during garbage time. Morris saw significant time when the game was on the line.

Is this going to be rbbc?

While I clearly expect Maroney to be the man. I now think that Morris will see 20-25% of all N.E. carries + the majority of goal line touches.

Bottom line:

Upgrade: Sammy Morris

Downgrade: Laurence Maroney

we debated this all summer . . . most people assumed Maroney would get 275-300 carries . . .stay tuned . . .

Didn't Maroney miss a lot of the preseason? If healthy, he will get some of those carries back later in the year, imo.

20-25 seems a tad low, i'd bet closer to 30-35%, especially in the early part of the season...they know they are a playoff team that will need maroney to be healthy at the end.

he had more than 20 carries... ps I am benching him for ADP vs Lions.. playing these two based on matchup for the rest of year

This was a hot topic in the preseason that Im sure many ignored. Sharks know Maroney can't handle 300 carries. Sharks drafted Morris for a fraction of the cost.

Maroney did have 20 touches, but many of them were in garbage time. When the game was on the line Morris was used in a 50/50 split muck like Corey Dillon was used in 2006.

During the game the commentators referenced a conversation they had with Belichick about Maroney being the "featured back" this season. Belichick's response was "I never said he was our feature back you said that." Based on that comment and how Morris was used today, I think Maroney gets 15-20 carries each week and Morris gets 5-10. Not a pure RBBC but pretty much Morris and Maroney will assume the roles that Dillon and Maroney had last year except Maroney will get the majority of carries this season.

Morris and Evans both. Both guys will vulture yards, Morris specifically, but you know theyre both getting their fair share of TDs from inside the 5. This is looking like a RBBC, but Maroney will still get his 20 or so touches every game to do his damage.

I agree. What will determine Maroney's success and value is TD's because I expect Morris to get a decent amount of carries and yards. The question is who will consistently get the carries at the GL. Will Evans be a consistent vulture? Morris? For Maroney to live up to expectations this year I think he needs 10-12 TD's because Morris is going to rack up some yards and we know Faulk will get the receptions. I think Maroney owners are hoping BB is just easing him into the feature back role given the shoulder injury. The NE is going to be great this year so perhaps Maroney can meet expections with Morris getting some carries and Evans a few GL TD's.

No. Morris got redzone work in the preseason, and all you heard out of NE is how they went after Morris aggressively the moment the FA period began.I snagged Morris in the 2nd to last round of both my drafts, and chuckled as I did so. Belechik LOVES Morris.

no no no..LOLMaroney didn't play hardly at all in preseason, heck,he didn't even practice much..he's just getting his legs..and, the game was a BLOWOUT very early in the 3rd Q..it was over at that point..why risk injury to your starter who hasn't practiced much this preseason?!

Maroney had 2 carries inside the 6. Morris had 1 in the 4th quarter when the game was already decidedEvans had 2 carries at the 1 yd line.I see no reason to conclude that Morris will get the majority of the GL carries at this point. We just don't know yet. I still think Maroney gets the majority though.

The important thing to note here is that this is not the last blowout New England will be involved in. With this combination of O and D, they're going to win half their games by 20plus points. Crushing the Jets AT the Meadowlands is no small feat. Home games against teams NOT named San Diego could potentially all be blowouts.

I think what may factor in here is that at some point either Morris or Maroney will get dinged and not play. Whoever the other guy is will then put up some really big #s. If youve got either, just hope its your boy who's left standing. Morris has a history of getting dinged.

Speaking as a Maroney owener in a dynasty league (and I watched the whole game).....Maroney came out on fire....but then ran into a brick wall. Morris looked really good running between the tackles....wish they would start running Maroney more outside the tackes....he was getting stuffed running inside....that's when Morris started getting more work. I agree that this is going to be a RBBC this year.

Well, I think that was expected. I sure didn't think Maroney would average 9 a carry or whatever he openned with on the first few runs. IIRC someone in the game thread said he looked like Jim Brown out there.

One is NOT a result of the other. Morris did not sit on the sideline all day then Maroney gets pulled in the 4th, and Morris gets some huge "garbage time" stats like might happen in blowouts. If you didn't watch the game and haven't read about their RBs this preseason, then please don't mislead others here.Morris is there to give breathers to 3rd down back Faulk and main/traditional RB Maroney. He affords the Pats the opportunity to keep those two fresh. He will get work throughout the game always giving way to Faulk and Maroney.

I mentioned this in another thread, but keep in mind that it was wicked hot/humid at the Meadowlands yesterday. This may be one of the reasons that Maroney was spelled quite a bit by the other guys.

Belicheck may indeed want to use a modest RBBC, but I would see how Maroney is used the next few weeks before making too much out of it.

Bri, Im not going to disagree with you. And Im certainly not trying to mislead anyone. But Im here to tell you that as the season grinds on, and New England rolls and blows out other teams, Maroney is not going to be used as someone like Larry Johnson or Emmitt Smith. He's not going to be the sole RB out there killing the clock and grinding out late game leads, ammassing yards and TDs that many fantasy studs have seen. Its not happening. I understand each of these backs, including Faulk, will be used throughout the game. I didnt see the game, but Ive seen the drive charts and understand how Morris was used. The point is Maroney is absolutely the lead back, but he's going to get plenty of help...particularly in blowout wins.

Except that they were splitting 50/50 in the first half and then Maroney not Morris got the garbage time carries . He is not just getting his legs it will be like that all season .Like Belichich said, the media made up that Maroney was the featured back he never said that .

Maroney had 20 carries / Morris Had 11... if you look in Play by Play; you'll see that Morris was only in during 2 series in the 1st half.

In the 3rd... NE was blowing them away and the backs began a split,

Into the 4th, when the game was over, Morris was getting Majority.. what would be the point of having your star out there when the game is over

Don't worry... when the game is on the line... there is only one Back... Maroney

1st HalfMaroney: 10 carries

Morris 5 carries w/ 2 rec

Not really a 50/50... please do a little homework when make you make a statement like that

I say if anything... Maroney's PPR values takes a hit, Brady didn't look at him at all on passing downs.
