Sammy Watkins Traded to Rams (1 Viewer)

Dynasty owner crying.....literally the only place that would be a downgrade for him. Grrrrrr.....was high on Kupp as well.....now they are both worthless....Grrr

so much for all the Kupp fluff pieces, does he even see the field now?

or is this moving on from TAustin instead?

Like you, I am a Sammy dynasty owner.  My initial reaction when I discovered it was the Rams (not the Eagles) Watkins had been traded to was a feeling akin to being kicked in the gut.  But this is not Jeff Fisher's Rams.  Sean McVay brings some offensive excitement to this team, and I like the direction the Rams are going.  Now that I have recovered from the initial shock, I am warming up to the (longterm) idea of Sammy as a Ram.

I get the two thoughts separately. Together they dont make much sense. Watkins is a downgrade moving to the Rams but you were high on Kupp? Can you unpack this a little bit?

Ok....thanks....that helped me to stop puking.....just gagging now

Sure thing. I think the offense can support one pass catcher and I thought Kupp had a chance to be that target monster. With the addition of Watkins there is not a lot of wiggle room and I would assume Kupp gets moved to 4th on the depth chart.  Outside of the depression of owning two Ram pass catchers now.

Trading away your top WR and top CB is basically conceding the season. I don't think anyone saw that coming and I'm not sure it's a good idea. This is the last year of Matthews contract, same with Gaines. Bills traded away a year of Sammy and 2 years of Darby for 1 year of Matthews and 1 year of Gaines and a 2nd round pick.
Yeah...the Bills don't want Matthews or Gaines long-term. This is the start of a total teardown and rebuild. They were just after the picks and guys they could throw in there to make it through the season.

If healthy he is a force. I understand his injury history.
I would amend your statement to say that when healthy, he has THE POTENTIAL to be a force.  I agree he is a talented WR.  But facts are facts.  He has been unable to stay on the field.  And it's not a small sample size we are talking about here.  It's been several years now.  In my humble opinion, you can't grade a guy on potential.  Sure, if he stays healthy he can be a force.  A lot of things have to go just right for him though for that to happen.

Good news/bad news for the Bills...the good news is they didn't end up giving Watkins that second contract at a big number...that could have been real bad...I give them credit for moving in another direction even though he is a big name...they got what should be a high two to go with their two first-rounders so they will be in a position to make some noise next off-season...the bad news is whiffing on Watkins really hurts...it looked like he was gonna be a stud when he got drafted and the fact he didn't deliver leaves a thin position extremely thin...that offense does not look good on paper right now...

Great move/gamble for the Rams...I see what they are doing here (although with Goff it may not matter)...with a new Coach that has an offensive background why not bring in a talent like this and hope a fresh start turns him around...if he works out then you have just helped a big hole they have had for years (a bad WR corps) and it will be well worth a #2...if he doesn't then you let him walk and don't take a financial hit...

For Watkins...he may like playing in LA but he is in one of the worst spots for fantasy upside...if Goff doesn't improve in a big way his numbers will be very pedestrian (even if he is on the field)...

I have seen enough of his playmaking ability on the field to be comfortable that he is more than potential. His injuries and now playing for the leagues two most stagnant offenses are the hurdles.

If they traded Shady you'll be shown to be right. But Watkins and Darby weren't making the bills win many games.

They (along with the Jets) probably see the Pats going all in for the next couple of years and figure it's wiser to wait out Brady's decline/retirement.  Might not be a bad idea.

Not sure I understand all the doom and gloom for Watkins.

To me, the one big issue is that this trade did not happen in March or April rather than now with four weeks until the regular season starts.

Many might prefer if he want to an offensive juggernaut like Pittsburgh, New England, Green Bay, Oakland, etc. But Watkins would be sharing targets much more than he would have in Buffalo and, now most likely, in LA.

Someone mentioned above, but this is not Jeff "three yards and a cloud of dust" Fisher's team, and many are thinking of Goff from last year. McVay is much more offensive minded, and can very well get Goff to the next level. Let's also not forget that from most accounts, Taylor has been having his own accuracy struggles this preseason.

Obviously if Goff continues to struggle, all bets are off. And of course Sammy needs to finally get healthy for a full season. If you want a silver lining, I don't think the Rams wouldn't have traded for damaged goods.

Ehh, there is room for optimism that the Rams can improve now that the albatross Fisher is gone. But not much optimism IMO, Goff looked lost out there. Rams are now low on draft picks for the 2nd year in a row.

I think the doom and gloom is from the dynasty owners that have been salivating at the thought of him being a free agent ever since the Bills declined his 5th year option. Lots of much better landing spots out there. And I can't see the Rams trading away a 2nd if they weren't planning on resigning Watkins or at least tagging him.

If you were a betting man, would you bet that Tyrod is better at passing the ball than Goff this year?

That's what this comes down to.
What I think it really boils down to is health.

I don't think either are great passers, but as mentioned, Goff has potential in what should be a more wide open offense.

Taylor can throw the deep ball, but it's a very run-heavy offense so those big play opportunities probably won't be as plentiful.

I don't think this can be stressed enough. Goff landed in the worst possible place for a 21 year old rookie QB to be. A defensive head coach, a TE coach as his OC and a first year failed NFL QB as his QB coach, and no standout WRs. This year's staff/weapons are light years ahead of where he was last year. Unless he is totally devoid of talent (which I don't believe) he will progress.

Waldman has consistently talked about the offensive system Goff entered as being akin to learning Chinese.  It's just completely and totally different from anything he's ever been exposed to.  Dak was in the Earhart-Perkins system which is much more intuitive and easily digested / absorbed.  They compared that to learning Spanish.

So ... to some extent I think Goff deserves a bit of a break for the utter failings of last year.  There were also reports his own WRs declined to work with him outside of practice, which ... shame on them if true.

Getting rid of their best WR (by far) and a good corner surely made them worse.
How many years into a career do we start making these statements based on production?  Based on production he was the Bills #4 (that says four) receiver in 2016.  Based on production he wishes he was Jordan Matthews the last 3 years.

This year maybe but Goff is a better pocket passer than Tyrod and has more upside to carry a wr in t he fantasy world.

Kid has a good arm and looked great in college, I am interested to see him with an offensive minded coach

I think short-term Watkins takes a hit due to getting on the same page as Goff. But as the season progresses, I think Goff offers more potential for Watkins than Taylor ever will. We know who Taylor is.
I dunno. Taylor threw a pretty decent deep ball and had some good games with Watkins.  Goff hasn't shown much of anything. I guess potential is there.  So maybe, but if I owned Watkins can't see how this helps him this year.

This is a good move for Watkins. Lateral move this year, but I really think that if Goff is horrible again this year the Rams make a run at Cousins next year or maybe Garapollo.

I think that's probably a very good assessment. I give Goff a complete pass last year because he had no quality training and little playing opportunity. I honestly can't say I have a clue what he might be capable of in the NFL with a good coach and a decent team.

But I think msudaisy is right. If they go with him this year and don't see what they need, they will likely address it.

not related but interesting here is I think Gurley really got some help with this trade.

What  I think about the impacts and values on the teams from a re-draft standpoint:

LA RAMS:

Goff - getting Watkins helps slight bump up

Watkins - l bump down... due to learning new system and taking time to gel...needs to be healthy

Other Rams WR - Woods...Austin....Kupp.... I cant see really drafting any of them before wont draft them now...waiver fodder at best

Gurley - might actually help take some stack the box off of them if Watkins can be 100%

Buffalo

Tyrod - loses Watkins gains Mathews....he was a low end QB2 IMO anyway...wont change him much

McCoy  - with Zeke being suspended hes my #3 de-facto off he boards in PPR leagues. Shady gonna catches tons of passes.

Zay Jones - bump up...probably starts day one. post round 10 flier in re-draft FF

Anquan Boldin - cagey vet should be starting as well. post round 10 flier in re-draft would probably be more valuable in TD/standard leagues

Jordan Mathews - not sure I can draft at all....waiver wire fodder

Philly - unless they make another move  I don't see this impacting their WR core at all. Sounds like Mathews was the odd man out anyway.

Bump - Agholor and you dynasty players perhaps they really like what they have in Mack Hollins - he was available post draft in some leagues...kid is big

Torry Smith - meh  I wouldnt draft him...waiver wire move maybe if/when Alshon gets injured...

That seems a little overly hopeful IMO. It assumes either QB will be available which may not be the case. Rams are short on draft picks so a trade would be tough. They are projected with a lot of cap space next year (but so are the Redskins), but that is before they resign Aaron Donald, Alec Ogletree and now... Sammy Watkins.

He is? Taylor's passer rating inside the pocket last year put him right between Wilson and Dalton. I don't think Goff was anywhere near that.

Tyrod has struggled throwing to the middle of the field, but that doesn't mean he has struggled in the pocket.

Both those guys are long shots for the Rams. More than likely the Rams QB will suck for years to come.

Taylor was never the thing holding Watkins back.

Cousins won't sign a long term deal with the Skins. Franchising him again would be almost 35 million. He is pretty much an unrestricted free agent next year
