San Diego defense (1 Viewer)

One thing sometimes overlooked when discussing defenses is the opponents QB experience. San Diego has an excellent chance at having NINE (and maybe up to TEN) games vs opponents with a QB that has NEVER started a full season in the NFL

Denver - 2 - Cutler

Oakland - 2 - Russell

KCity - 2 - Huard/Croyle

Houston - 1 - Schaub

Minnesota - 1 - Jackson

Tennessee - 1 - Young

Detroit - 1 - (maybe) Stanton in week 15

(this is the team that had 61 sacks last year missing Merriman a quarter of the season)

that has to mean something, maybe they boost upward a couple spots and even challenge the Bears/Ravens for top spot?

Shhhhhh!

Don't overpay for defense. . Don't be that guy that drafts the Chargers D in the 6th round. They change too much from year to year.

The aggregate ADP posted by Dodds the other day had SD at pick 106, or 9.10. So do you pick them in round 7 or 8 instead? I guess it depends on your scoring system, but I don't think I could bring myself to do that. I don't ever really spend a pick that high on the top defenses like Chicago (7.6) or Baltimore (8.3). I'll let someone else grab them while I take someone like this in that range:QB - Rivers, Vick, LeinartRB - K. Jones, T. Bell, B. JacksonWR - Galloway, Mark Clayton, S. HolmesTE - Cooley, V. DavisYou could get a decent defense like Miami or Jacksonville five rounds later and probably not give up that many points on your defense, while instead filling out your starting position players with one of the above for a better value.By the way, I don't think theres any chance Stanton will be starting in week 15, even if Detroit's season is basically over (and I'm sure it will be). I think they'll keep Kitna as the starter until Stanton is ready to assume the role outright, which will probably be at least a year or two away. But, aside from that, this info is good info. I think I may use this in my auction draft where it might be even more relevant. I'd be willing to pay a buck or two more for San Diego than I would otherwise spend on most other defenses. Not giving up much more to get a better value in that case.

Hopefully with Marty gone they'll suck less at the end of halves and play less prevent. He definitely put them in a shell at points and it cost them just about every time. I hope Cottrell/Norv don't call off the dogs.

Their safety position should be improved this year now that Jue is healthy and they've drafted Weddle.

Things could really take off if Cromartie takes a step up this season.

The causes for concern are the loss of Donnie Edwards (A.J. feels Cooper and Wilhelm are ready to be big time, so I'll reserve judgment for now) and Jamal Williams being another year older. Hopefully they can avoid the ridiculous number of injuries (and suspensions) they had last year. I won't go into Quentin Jammer - I know I have a slightly unrealistic neurosis about him.

I wouldn't take the Cutler games as gimmies - he looks very good to me.

Still I can see the Chargers finishing top 5 in defense this year. Let's not forget opening day against Grossman - that could be a big payout for the Charger D too.

IMHO, your league scoring system needs to play a big role in how you assess this.

In my most competitive league last year, Baltimore averaged a bit over 37 points a game while San Diego was around 28 points. That 9 point difference would be hard to make up with any of the other potential players on your roster.

Assess things based the Footballguys.com projections and then use the VBD to see where it makes the most sense to try and snag one of the Best Defenses as late as possible without missing out on the cream of the crop.

You haven't seen much of Cottrell, have you?
Not much to be honest - I just know he's from the Bills/Phillips school and has been involved in a couple of good defenses over the years. I take that to mean I'm going to be disappointed. I'd appreciate details now rather than not being prepared for frustration when things go wrong.TIA

Expect no blitzing, lots of confused looks on the sidelines, inept play-calling, zero improvement, and lots of coachspeak. And lots of gray hair for fans. He wasn't any good for the Jets or the Vikings. He was out of coaching in 2006, and it's not hard to figure out why.I think he's no good, but he does have a boatload of talent in San Diego. But he won't be rushing the passer, that's for sure. The Jets had 35, 30 and 33 sacks under Cottrell, despite Abraham getting 39 of those sacks.

I can't imagine a head coach would allow this defense NOT to rush the passer. Even if what you say is true and Cotrells tendency is not to rush the passer, with Merriman/Phillips being probably the top two pass rushing tandem in the NFL, I couldn't see how a coach would not insist that they get more rush on the passer.
