My SIL is moving from Vegas to San Deigo in the fall. I am planning on visiting for March Break with the fam. I have never been to Cali, and want to see as much in the area for vthe week we would be there.

How long a drive is it to from San Diego to:

Big Sur, Carmel, San Fran? (photography stuff)

What are the must do things in San Diego? My kids will be 9 and 7 when we go.

In the quick research I have done the things that I wanna see are:

San Diego Zoo

Midway Museum

Museum of Photographic Art

Whale watching trip

I took advantage of free lodging for 3 years in Vegas, so I guess I have to take advantage in SD now.

Thanks in advance

I've never heard of Big Sur or Carmel. The drive from San Diego to San Francisco is about the same as the drive from New York, NY to Chapel Hill, NC.

The Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, and Sea World are all variations on a theme, but they are all worthwhile.Balboa Park (where the Zoo is) also has a bunch of cool museums. The beach.Day trip to Baja? (Not Tijuana. More like Ensenada, Estero, Puerto Nuevo, etc.)

Seriously Maurile?I did this drive on Friday, it takes around 7-8 hours and I encourage you to take the 101 instead of the 5. Frankly, while Carmel is gorgeous it is a very long way to travel from SD unless you are planning a two week vacation. If you come before July you can fly SD to Carmel (about an hour) with Allegiant airlines for ridiculously cheap (I am paying $60 for my one-way trip to SD).

There are probably places in San Diego County that I've never heard of. Anything north of Bakersfield, forget it -- besides Oakland and San Francisco. ETA: And Palo Alto.

As a native San Diegan I'll chime in.

I would avoid a day trip to Mexico, especially if you are taking two kids. TJ is a hole and wrought with drug cartel violence. Ensenada is about an hour drive south and I don't think that area is immune to the drug trafficking problems the border towns have. I would avoid Mexico all together. Completely unsafe and not a great place to go unless you really are in need of buying a blanket or a ceramic surfing monkey.

Long drive to SF but it looks like you have already crossed that off your list.

Cabrillo Point, Point Loma and Cornado Island are nice. A little touristy but what isn't. Old Town San Diego is cool if you are looking for historical San Diego type stuff to do. Gaslamp Quarter is great for numerous bars and restaurants and is right by Petco park if you want to drag the kids to see the Padres. Beach is always a good choice but in March the water might be a bit cold.

I second that! It is NOT what it used to be and i definitely wouldn't take kids.

Another idea for the kids. About 40 miles north of San Diego in Carlsbad is Legoland, a Lego-themed amusement park. It doesn't have the big-### aggressive thrill rides big amusement parks do, but your kids are barely big enough for those, anyway. There's also a great kid-friendly aquarium on the property where the kids can pop their heads into portholes and view the fish from kind-sorta inside the tanks.
Yes...I forgot this....added to the list!!! :blackdot: ty!

Not to hijack the OP's topic too much...but I'm going to San Diego for two weeks on business (leaving this Sunday). Staying in Old Town area.

[*]What's the best beaches to hit for watching the local talent?

[*]Best sushi bar in San Diego?

[*]Best Mexican food (interior, authentic Mexican, rather than Tex-Mex)?

[*]Best sports bar (or place to watch sports, especially World Cup action)?

[*]Best men's club?

A bit to the north of San Diego you can find La Jolla. Beautiful little beach area with great scenery.

Best sushi: Sushi on the Rock in La Jolla"Interior Mexican"--You won't find much. San Diego Mexican food is generally Baja style, not interior Mexico or Tex/Mex. Las Olas in Cardiff and Fidel's in Solana Beach are two of my favorites.

Too far removed to tell you what the best places are currently for the other activities.

Mission Beach is generally a nice mixI really liked Ono Sushi in Hillcrest

Better off getting fish tacos

Selection is generally poor. A few places in the gaslamp might be ok, or PB maybe

No idea

Been here for a week now, with a week to go.

O'Briens Pub (Convoy near Balboa in Kearny Mesa) is one of the top bars I've been in. Ever. Any city. Any theme. Really prides themselves on their craft beers and knowledgeable (and smoking hot) bartenders. If you like IPAs then their might be no better city anywhere for cask-conditioned, crafted beer. The Russian Stone Pliny the Elder (haven't had the chance to try Pliny the Younger, yet, and the local Alpine Pure Hoppiness are outstanding examples).

And its a HUGE spot to watch the US World Cup matches. One of the best sporting crowds I've ever been a part of during a televised sports cast.

Best dining experience so far has been George's on the Cove in La Jolla. Top notch view, food, and service.

The beaches are all pretty damned awesome. Talent everywhere, and the boardwalks are great for a morning run.

Hit the Gas Lamp district last night. Feh. Not much fun if you're out and about on a Friday night on your own.

As a former Pacific Beach resident, the cold water is not that big of a deal in March, it's the hordes of very drunk Spring Breakers that should keep you away from the beach. If you still must go to the beach I'd advise going north of PB, maybe all the way up to Solano Beach (20-30 minutes north or so). PB, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach are almost unbearable in March although maybe this is just residual disgruntled resident feelings. Forget Mexico, it was a horrid place before the rise in violence

Balboa Park is a good day trip and if you can get away from the kids for a bit and play disc golf at all, Morley Field is the best course in Southern Cal.

Sea World, the Zoo, Legoland, Wild Animal Park have all been mentioned. They're touristy, expensive and probably crowded but will not fail to keep your kids in awe.

Haven't been down there since Petco was built but Gaslamp District is probably more of a date night without kids and there are some great restaurants.

I hear the Stu Seagal has his studios all decked out for tours so if you want to see Hollywood Lite you could tour his little dirty, corrupt stages or you could drive the 2 hours more or less to LA and go to Universal Studios or Warner Brothers.

I don't remember when the waves are good at Trestles, and if they're good it'll be crowded, but there is world class surfing there and it's less than an hour north. Also San Onofre campsite is just south of that if you want to camp on the bluff, or San Mateo is inland and a quick drive to the generally uncrowded beaches down there, as everyone's attention is on Trestles. If you go, careful of the nude beach which I think is Trail 5.

There's Old Town and Downtown, reachable by Trolley (which I would look into a lot for parking reasons).

Anyways, this was really just an exercise in what I miss from SD, though I certainly don't miss working at Stu Seagal (a savage thief and cutthroat turd). Just remember, the further away from Mexico you stay, the better.

PB is the place to be for that, or at least 10 years ago it was. OB's too territorial and MB is to gangster and touristy. Thursday Night youcallits and Moondoggys is unreal for lowered inhibitions!

Love O'Briens. I just wish they had better TVs. You won't get your chance to try Pliny The Younger for a year or so unless someone has been hiding a keg. I was there for their last tapping. We killed the keg in about half an hr. If you like beer click here

If you liked O'Briens that much you shouldn't leave without seeing Hamilton's or Toronado. Or Pizza Port, Blind Lady, Linkery.....

We're so lucky for our beers in San Diego. You really can't go wrong. If you have the time my #1 recommendation is Stone Brewery in Escondido. 40 taps and at least as many bottles. They have a fantastic restaurant, all the food is locally and sustainably grown (the duck tacos, buffalo burger and mac & beer cheese are excellent). And don't let the exterior fool you (square industrial building) because the interior is the most surprising setting you can imagine. There is one drawback: they have no televisions. Then again since baseball is the only thing going right now it's not a big deal.

San Diego Guys --

Looking for some tips please....headed to the area for work next week and I think I've packed a little extra time into the schedule on the back end.

Technically, I'll be in Carlsbad the majority of the time from Tuesday afternoon until Thursday, so 2 nights.

Best eats in Carlsbad? Thinking sushi and steaks mostly, but open to anything, and also quick eats for lunch too.

Anything in particular to do in Carlsbad besides Legoland and the beach? Nightlife hotspots (maybe live music, or a local brewery)?

Hopefully by lunch Thursday morning I'll be headed south towards the Hilton SD Resort (Mission Bay) by the airport (flying out Friday AM). The plan I have penciled in is to drive 101 south catching some cool views along the way and spend some time in Torrey Pines, maybe at the beach, before heading to the resort.

Is there somewhere worth a couple hours in this stretch from Carlsbad to Mission Bay besides/better than Torrey? I don't want to venture any further south than the resort, so that takes most of SD away. I know that might sound lame, but I've been to SD before, so hitting up sights along the coast on the northern trek is my preference as I've never been there.

I need to research the area right around the resort a bit more, but is there a can't miss eatery there (think around Mission Bay)? Nightlife again?

Thanks!

Do you have your sticks? I think me and my bro are gonna walk Mission Bay's course tomorrow AM. Should be pretty empty - you're free to join. If you're staying at teh Hilton I'm thinking of, the golf course is less than 1 mile away.

If you like great beer and good pizza, there's a Pizza Port in my hood prolly 3-4 miles from your hotel - google Pizza Port Ocean Beach.

:welcome:If you're going to drive to see scenery, you might as well enjoy the scenery along the way. Solvang is also a nice town to take a quick stop in.But that's a really long drive. You could always take your kids to the Hollywood tourist thing. Some neat (famous) stuff there.

If you are in the Carlsbad area then you want the Pizza Port in Solana Beach. If you are in Mission then the one in OB is more convenient.

I can provide short behind the scenes tours and animal feeds at the Zoo on some days of the week. Just give me a weeks notice and I'll try to make it work

As for places to eat I hear this place is supposed to be good http://www.weststeakandseafood.com/ (I have not actually been here, just the bistro next door that is owned by the same group). If you are looking to grab some good beer (and food) I would recommend Karl Strauss. They have a brewery restaurant in Carlsbad and usually have at least 10 beers on tap. They have a cask night once a week (Thursday I believe) http://www.karlstrauss.com/PAGES/Eats/Carlsbad.html. As far as the drive to Mission Bay from Carlsbad I would recommed stopping at Pizza Port in Solana Beach (again for some good beer and Pizza) and then hit up La Jolla cove for some nice scenery (the nature kind, not women). The drive from Carlsbad is not that far though (20-40 min depending on traffic). If you are going to be staying at Mission Bay on Thursday night do yourself a favor and catch a cab to Pacific Beach (PB) at night to check out the scenery (the women kind, not nature). Just tell the cab driver to take you to PB Bar and Grill and you will be right in the middle of it all (the cab ride should only be about 10min). Have Fun!

Great post, thanks. Definitely checking out Strauss and will hit Pizza Port either in Carlsbad or on my drive south since it's right on the 101 at Solana Beach. West seems to have a nice happy hour menu at the bar too. Heading to the left coast in the AM...

I am heading to San Diego on Saturday for the March Break.

I wanna have a card night at one of the Casinos....what is the best? I see that Rincon is hosting a WSOP circut event for the month...so the cash games, I assume should be good.

Thanks

OH...Valence...a pm is on the way!

Back from my trip, and it was an awesome week, and I will have to head back to see more of San Diego

Some thought on what we saw:

Legoland- Kids loved it. I thought the place was a bit lame and needed a good upgrade.

Sea World- LOved it. Had a contact that got us behind the scenes, and had a tour of the aminal hospital, the training pools for the dolphins and got to feed them and pet them...the kids LOVED all of this. The park was a pleasure to wonder

SD Zoo- LOVED IT. The gorillas and the Pandas were awesome to watch. Getting around the zoo is easy with the shuttles, and the low crowd levels

Midway Museum- Just awesome. Got to chat to an old guy that was at Pearl Harbour the day it was bombed. He was so proud, and wanted to tell his story to everyone. The kids loved climbing into the plances and helicopters. I would go back to this place in a heartbeat!

Balboa Park. Just an awesome place. I wish we had more time to explore it. Thye kids and wife went to the Reuben Fleet center, and I went the MOPA. Itc was very cool, but smaller then I had imagined. The buskers were cool to watch also

EATING:

This may have been the best 7 consecutive days of eating in my life.

Old Town Mexican Cafe was unreal. The food was awesome, and the fresh ward tortillas were so good. The also have a "secret" menu that you can order, but it is found by word of mouth. Had the wandering band sing us "La Bamba"

The Fish Grotto down beside the Midway Museum was also very good. Great view of the island and water (Coronado??) I tried Oysters for the first time...I'm hooked

Corvette Cafe was a great way to end the trip. The night before we left, we went here, and the kids had a ball. It is loud, and there is lots going on, but it was fun....and the food was quite good.

Rubys Diner- a 5o's themed buger joint. Great burgers, and milkshakes. For a quick meal, it was very good. Ate here twice.

NOTES- If you are travelling to San Diego to visit and sitesee, I can not reccommend the San Diego Go pass highly enough. We saved a good 200.00 by buying this in advance, and it has all sorts of discounds included.

Great time had by all!

Glad you enjoyed our city Parm. If you're ever back and have an hour or two w/o the fam, I'll buy you a beer.

The Corvette Diner you ate at, was it the one in Liberty Station in Point Loma? I take my daughter there often - I live ~ 1 mile from there. Kids love it.

Umm, I was told it was the new one...it was in a little compound like place.I will take you up on that beer....I think my SIL is going to be planning a wedding in the next year, so we will have to return.I tried Negra Modelo while I was there...VERY tasty!

Enjoyed Pizza Port Solana Beach for lunch 'n brews on my drive to La Jolla.

And that Oatmeal brew at Strauss is fantastic after a nice dinner. One of the best desserts I've ever had!
