I rediscovered these recently and they're now apart of my regular rotation, Being a very practical eater, I love that there's no prep time and they store forever. I typically just dump the whole can onto some jasmine rice (another big favorite of mine) and compliment that with some kale or broccoli. The sardines as well as the oil they're in go so well with the jasmine. You could also eat a can by itself as snack. I highly recommend if you haven't tried already. They look like hell but taste oh so good.

Best place in the world for Sardines is in Lisbon. Their biggest and best festival every year includes grilling sardines and pork along with drinking beer and sangrias. The streets are filled with people, music, the smell of grilled meat, and flowing with cheap booze. Wonderful time and the sardines are much better than the things that come in cans.

I basically eat fish (lots of sushi, but outside of that mainly smoked fish) on a semi-daily basis... pastrami lox, mild Scottish salmon, eastern nova, salted belly lox for hangovers, sable, and other breakfast/lunch fishes like lean or fatty kippered salmon, or sometimes some whitefish.

For someone who loves fish, I've never gotten into sardines and don't get it, I find them repulsive, I don't know why, just do.

GET OUT OF MY KITCHEN!

There's a can sitting on the counter right this very moment. Not mine though, son loves them. Maybe I'll try one when he opens it.

I stand corrected. He has no idea why mom bought them for him and is hesitant to try them. "Maybe if they didn't have eyes and skin."

I grew up eating canned sardines in tomato sauce. I'm indifferent.

But they look great when I see them served in Mediterranean countries on travel shows.

The ones at Costco don't have eyes, skin, or bones. That's why I try to get them elsewhere. The eyes, skin, and bones make them better. Well, the skin and bones, anyway. I don't think I've ever seen them with eyes.

I didn't see any at Costco with skin and bones. They have the boneless/skinless one's next to the anchovies and that's it. I would do the skin, but bones seem like a hassle.

sardines are a specific species and are labeled 'bristling'. in the usa it is legal to market trash fish as sardines. they are usually the cheapest ones and come with mustard sauce or the like.

anchovies are better.

Can you just mash them in the olive oil they come in and make a fish spread for crackers? That seems like it would be super easy and tasty.

Thanks. At the Costco I go to, they generally carry Seasons brand, skinless and boneless, but I will keep a lookout for the Wild Planet brand.

Bones aren't a hassle. You just eat them. You don't even notice them.
I had no idea. Normally, I wouldn't eat fish bones.
Sardine bones aren't like normal fish bones. at least the canned ones.
curious why even bother removing them

Because people think "oh, boneless, that's better!" and will buy them.
