First, the call was awful, as was the interception call in the first quarter, another huge missed call by the refs that went against the Chargers. This call was missed in two ways... it was a fumble, but if ruled a pass, then it was a backward pass, since the ball landed behind where it was thrown, meaning the ball should have been considered live anyway. That said, the Chargers started 1-3 last year and still made it to the AFC championship game. I see no reason they can't rally this year as they did last year. It's not how I hoped they would start out, but I'm trying to remain optimistic.North said:What a joke!SD is now 0-2 because of the worst call I've ever seen. Horrible analysis. San Diego did what they needed to do to win the game. Instead of saying, "they still had a chance to win the game and couldn't get it done" what is more accurate to say is that Denver got a SECOND chance to win the game and DID get it done. How you could possibly take that series of events and say the Chargers are the team that got the mulligan is laughable.AnonymousBob said:Shanahan was kind enough to give San Diego a mulligan by going for the 2 point conversion. That was a bad call but bad calls happen. Despite the terrible call they still had a chance to win the game and couldn't get it done.
Tell that to Seattle fans who saw Roesthberger go down at the 1 foot line. When it happens to your team, it stings. The chargers did give up 8 points, but if the call is made correctly, we win and aren't given the chance to let Cutler beat us.BFSBigSteelThrill said:Inadvertent whistles happen all the time at every level of football.
If the game was that close, you should have made another play elsewhere.
Its not because you gave up the final 8 points you lost. Its because you gave up 38 in total.
Seriously? It was a physical human error and then a stupid rule (created by the league) that was then required to be applied. A "disgrace" is a bit of a stretch. You're a bright man - you really don't see that?IvanKaramazov said:I have no connection to either Den or SD, and as a Bills fan I honestly don't know who I was supposed to be rooting for in this game, but I am personally offended by how this played out. Well, maybe the other play made elsewhere was the slant Chambers caught and was incorrectly ruled an interception. Which led directly to a Denver TD.For me, it's the fact that both of these bad calls happened and went against the Chargers and led to 15 points for the Broncos that makes it so hard to take.BigSteelThrill said:Inadvertent whistles happen all the time at every level of football.

No one but Bronco's will remember this by next year.IvanKaramazov said:I have no connection to either Den or SD, and as a Bills fan I honestly don't know who I was supposed to be rooting for in this game, but I am personally offended by how this played out. I'm a huge Broncos fan. This is a giant stretch. Nobody but San Diego is jumping on that ball without a whistle. Cutler was the closest to it, and there were 3 defenders surrounding the ball on the ground, and it was picked up immediately.Perhaps the Broncos would have jumped on the ball without a whistle,
First of all, yes it was a bad call. Probably as about a bad a call as you can make in that situation. With that said, the Chargers aren't 0-2 because of a bad call. The Chargers are 0-2 because their defense isn't capable of stopping a decent high school offense in the last minute of the game. They have had the lead with less than a minute to play in both games this year, and they lost both of them. If they can't get that fixed, this one bad call won't really mean anything.
None of the players heard the whistle. The outcome would have been exactly the same. To a degree, the NFL has to rely on the competence of their refs. They already drill it in their head to hold off on blowing the whistle. If they really want to see reffing improve at this point I think they have to institute some kind of penalty for bonehead calls like this. I'm not holding my breath though. I doubt they even make much mention of it.Once the whistle blows the play stops and the players, theoretically, stop.Perhaps the Broncos would have jumped on the ball without a whistle, who knows, but you can't put all the players back where they were are tell them to scramble for the ball on the count of three.Human error. Not much you can do about it. Part of the game, I guess.I realize it's a rule that if a ref blows the whistle that a play is dead but... they get some calls wrong sometimes and they're reversed -- why can't a wrongly blown whistle be reversed? I don't get it..![]()
I'm aware it's a stretch but you a ref can't blow the whistle to end a play and then go back and say, "This is what would have happened if I didn't blow the whistle."There just isn't any gray area there.I'm a huge Broncos fan. This is a giant stretch. Nobody but San Diego is jumping on that ball without a whistle. It is hard to take, especially on the same day that the refs spot SF 17 points through phantom or non calls.Well, maybe the other play made elsewhere was the slant Chambers caught and was incorrectly ruled an interception. This is a poor argument that has very little logic to it. Actually, the defense held them twice inside the two and then created a situation where the opposing QB fumbled the ball and they recovered. They did everything they are supposed to do and their reward was to have the Ref act like some dude officiating his first high school game. If you give a good offense enough chances they will score. They should never have had the last two chances.A bad call didn't make the defense give up 10 yards in two plays for the TD, and then give up the 2-point conversion.
anytime there has been an advertant whistle...has happened alot of times. im not saying it is wrong...im saying inadvertant whistles have long been a part of the problem of replay.
I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e. playoffs. 1) Tuck Rule - while technically correct, the rule is still speculative.2) Green Bay vs. San Francisco - Jerry Rice fumble that was not a fumble. 3) Not a playoff game I don't believe but Testaverde's phantom touchdown.Well, tell us about some of the ones you have seen that you would deem worse.
They lost two games because of one bad call? Amazing.North said:What a joke!SD is now 0-2 because of the worst call I've ever seen. This is 100% my take as well.moleculo said:I may be one of the biggest Bronco homers on these boards, and I agree - SD got robbed. Despite some fantastic offensive performances, Denver did not deserve this win. But, I'll take it anyways!
how about any controversial call in the seattle-pittsburgh championship game a few years back...lolducking all the steelers fans.I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e.
So you can't actually cite any worse calls, yet you were criticizing the OP for saying it's the worst call he has seen? And to imply any inadvertent whistle is equally bad is ridiculous. If the call was made correctly, the Chargers win, period. Since they lost, it is arguable that this call cost them a win. Most inadvertent whistles do not have that kind of weight.anytime there has been an advertant whistle...has happened alot of times. im not saying it is wrong...im saying inadvertant whistles have long been a part of the problem of replay.
not sure i understand this question...there have been tons of inadvertant whistles that have ruined a replay. do you expect me to remember each one?Jeff. Honest question. I think you misunderstood his point. This is a poor argument that has very little logic to it. Actually, the defense held them twice inside the two and then created a situation where the opposing QB fumbled the ball and they recovered. The Cutler fumble was an unforced error. Basically what happened here was SD was unable to capitalize on an unforced error, due to a ref's mistake. I will readily admit that the ref blew the call, but don't act like SD earned that fumble.
To this day, I still feel that the refs ruined that Super Bowl... and I didn't even have a dog in the fight.how about any controversial call in the seattle-pittsburgh championship game a few years back...lolducking all the steelers fans.I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e. playoffs. 1) Tuck Rule - while technically correct, the rule is still speculative.2) Green Bay vs. San Francisco - Jerry Rice fumble that was not a fumble. 3) Not a playoff game I don't believe but Testaverde's phantom touchdown.Well, tell us about some of the ones you have seen that you would deem worse.
same here!!!To this day, I still feel that the refs ruined that Super Bowl... and I didn't even have a dog in the fight.how about any controversial call in the seattle-pittsburgh championship game a few years back...lolducking all the steelers fans.I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e.
You can't cite a call that was made correctly according to the rules (i.e., the Tuck Rule), since it was not actually a bad call, just a bad rule.I'm not familiar with #2. #3 was a big driver that led to the NFL adopting instant replay. However, I would argue that this one is worse, because they failed on 3 counts in live action:1. Ruling it a pass and not a fumble.2. Not ruling it a backward pass.3. Not holding off on the whistle just in case, knowing that replay could correct it if they let it go and it was truly an incomplete pass.I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e.
So San Diego lets Denver drive all the way down to the 2, Cutler is throwing what very well could be a touchdown pass and the ball slips out of his hands. The refs blow the call and SD had the game stolen from them? I'm not buying. It was indeed a bad call, but the only reason they wouldn't have been 0-2 if that stood is because of sheer luck of a human being making a mistake he doesn't normally make (Cutler).
But still...It makes a bit more sense the way you put it, though.Once the whistle blows the play stops and the players, theoretically, stop.Perhaps the Broncos would have jumped on the ball without a whistle, who knows, but you can't put all the players back where they were are tell them to scramble for the ball on the count of three.Human error. Mike Renfro in the 1980 AFC Championship game should also be on the list.I would start with the worst calls in the games that mattered most... i.e.

Actually, that's a stupid post. I wasn't going to say anything till I saw you say it was a good one. The Chargers are 0 - 2 because of the bad call rather than being 1 - 1. In close games Refs are supposed to make the right calls. On a play like that there was no excuse to blow the whistle. No excuse whatsoever. It's a long season, but every game counts. No matter how their defense played, they would have won the game despite playing poorly. In case you didn't realize, Denver did some things poorly as well.First of all, yes it was a bad call. Probably as about a bad a call as you can make in that situation. With that said, the Chargers aren't 0-2 because of a bad call.
