Seattle TE Luke Willson (1 Viewer)

This guy popped up on my radar when the Seahawks spent a 5th round pick on him in the draft. He had modest production at Rice before struggling with a high ankle sprain during his final season there, but he has some pretty impressive athletic qualities. 6'5.3" 251 pounds. Runs the 40 in 4.51 seconds. Has a 38" vertical and a 10'2" broad jump along with 23 bench reps and a 7.08 three cone time. Those are numbers that would put a lot of WRs to shame.

I figured he was probably just a workout warrior with spotty football skills, but he has drawn consistent praise throughout mini camp and training camp. I've been following Seattle closely this preseason because I'm pretty heavily invested in their other rookies (Michael, Harper, Ware). The team's top 2 TEs (Zach Miller and Anthony McCoy) went down early with injuries. That opened the door for Willson to make a run at significant playing time. It seems like he is delivering. He has worked with the starters in each of the past two games. More surprisingly, he actually looks like he belongs. He caught the ball well and made some nice blocks. He even lined up at fullback and helped spring Christine Michael for a long TD.

I don't see much redraft value here, but he's a name to watch for dynasty leagues. He's probably been off waivers for weeks in deeper leagues, but might still be out there some places. I wouldn't go crazy overpaying to get him, but he's flying under the radar and could be a nice sneaky buy, especially since owners may still view him as a mere throw-in. If a 5th round RB was running with the starters and playing well, the hype would be immense. But since Willson is a TE, he's not drawing much notice. I would take advantage of that in 1.5 PPR leagues and other formats where any decent starting TE has value.

Started the game again tonight. 4 catches for 45 yards at halftime.

Don't sleep in dynasty. He looks like he's going to be a useful cog in Seattle's machine.

I'm with you in all dynasty leagues, even as a flier in a few redrafts.

this kid has looked like a serious player during the preseason with Miller out of action. Now that Miller will be back as the starter, what are the chances that Willson has any relevance in redrafts this year? Any Seahawks homers have an opinion?

With Miller in I think Willson will have 20-25 receptions for the season. Not sure that he is worth rostering in redraft unless you are in a large league.

yeah, I figured that he would be a long shot, but I thought there might be some value there if the coaching staff decides to utilize more 2 TE sets to get him on the field and take advantage of his speed and hands (sort of a poor man's Pitta/Hernandez role), especially since Miller hasn't really done much since coming to Seattle. With Harvin out and the RBs not being big pass catchers, I felt like Willson might be a sneaky upside guy this year.

I wouldn't expect much in redraft. In dynasty there's interesting potential. I think Miller was healthy the last few games and Willson still started (I think they were using 2 TE sets with Miller and Willson). He does not look like a dominating force, but he already looks like he belongs and that's a nice achievement for an unheralded 5th round rookie. At minimum, he looks like a guy who's going to play a lot of snaps for this team over the next few years. Being on the field often will give him a chance to put up some numbers.

I agree with this assessment.

Just caught the most recent preseason game. Thought he showed some decent flashes. I don't think he's going to be consistent enough this year to have weekly starter value (though it's possible), but he seems like a nice play in best ball formats and/or as a cheap TE2 with upside. Suspect possession game, but he can really run and will play a lot.
