This guy popped up on my radar when the Seahawks spent a 5th round pick on him in the draft. He had modest production at Rice before struggling with a high ankle sprain during his final season there, but he has some pretty impressive athletic qualities. 6'5.3" 251 pounds. Runs the 40 in 4.51 seconds. Has a 38" vertical and a 10'2" broad jump along with 23 bench reps and a 7.08 three cone time. Those are numbers that would put a lot of WRs to shame.
I figured he was probably just a workout warrior with spotty football skills, but he has drawn consistent praise throughout mini camp and training camp. I've been following Seattle closely this preseason because I'm pretty heavily invested in their other rookies (Michael, Harper, Ware). The team's top 2 TEs (Zach Miller and Anthony McCoy) went down early with injuries. That opened the door for Willson to make a run at significant playing time. It seems like he is delivering. He has worked with the starters in each of the past two games. More surprisingly, he actually looks like he belongs. He caught the ball well and made some nice blocks. He even lined up at fullback and helped spring Christine Michael for a long TD.
I don't see much redraft value here, but he's a name to watch for dynasty leagues. He's probably been off waivers for weeks in deeper leagues, but might still be out there some places. I wouldn't go crazy overpaying to get him, but he's flying under the radar and could be a nice sneaky buy, especially since owners may still view him as a mere throw-in. If a 5th round RB was running with the starters and playing well, the hype would be immense. But since Willson is a TE, he's not drawing much notice. I would take advantage of that in 1.5 PPR leagues and other formats where any decent starting TE has value.
