The guy that lives and breathes making / saving money questions why a billion dollar franchise keeps going to the proverbial well for a couple more 100 million.
Good point,  I stand corrected.

They are still garbage though and I don't understand why people go to see them.

Back To The Future

First one was so good and the next ones so bad that I never even felt like watching #1 again.

Last season of The Wire.
Good one. I tried to pound my way through that season again recently and bailed on it. Matter of fact, it went off a cliff for me about mid-way through the 2nd to last season.

ClownCausedChaos2

The first one was great.  A lot of really good content, funny, insightful, and on point.  The second didn't have any of that.  Really seemed forced, like they were just trying too hard.  Probably just in it for the money.

Alien 3 was such a disappointment. You had Alien which was a great horror/sci-fi movie, then Aliens which was a great action/sci-fi movie and then Alien 3 which was just a big bag of dung. Alien:resurrection which was a little better but not much and then finally the awful Alien vs. Predator movies. I still love the first 2 but the overall franchise got killed with Alien 3.

My kids all love all three BTTFs.  I remember feeling the same way you do, and I still don't like #2.  #3 is alright.

G.I. Joe - the Rise of Cobra was somewhat entertaining.  Not great by any stretch but a fun watch.  Retaliation was horrible.

FWIW:

G.I. Joe is a military science fiction action film series, based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe toy, comic and media franchises. Development for the first film began in 2003, but when the United States launched the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, Hasbro suggested adapting the Transformers instead. In 2009, the first film was released under the title, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. A second film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation was released in 2013. A third film in the series has been confirmed to be in early development, and a possible crossover with the Transformers franchise is being considered.

None.

I dont understand how a movie that came out after another can ruin the first one.  You can still always go back and watch the greatness of the first one.  Godfather 3 didnt make 1 or 2 any worse.  The upcoming Ghostbusters will not ruin the greatness of the original.  etc. etc.

I came out of the second one so angry because it seemed like nothing more than a long trailer for the third movie.  Or was it a way to make me pay twice as much for the same movie?  I can't decide and it was about 25 years ago.  Boy was I angry!

Interesting difference though between a sequel ruining the franchise "thereafter" or being so bad it actually ruins the franchise retroactively.

Lots of bad sequels. Alien 3 mentioned by Porkchop is a good example (you can lump Predator 2 in there), but those didn't ruin the greatness of the originals for me. Ditto for Lethal Weapon 3 or Escape from LA or Major League II.

However, I totally agree that the Matrix sequels kind of retroactively killed the joy of the original to me.  :(

Interesting question as to who had the bigger fall from early greatness/potential to mind-numbing failure:

The Wachowskis (Matrix...then two Matrix sequels and Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending...not sure where to classify V for Vendetta on that list)

or

M Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense and Unbreakable and Signs...followed by The Village and Lady in the Water and The Happening and The Last Airbender and After Earth)

Not trying to   :hijacked: . Just a thought...
The Wachowskis easily. They did Matrix which was amazingly brilliant and then everything after that range from horribly bad to meh with the exception of V for Vendetta which was above average.

I also agree with you in that a lot of sequels are just bad but they really do not detract from the original to me with the exception of Matrix. The sequels really took away from the brilliance of the Matrix. I can't watch the Matrix now without being tainted by the sequels.

Problem Child 3 did make me rethink that the first Problem Child wasn't that bad in comparison. It did diminish the original around the 10 or 11th viewing.

I don't care whether or not the Star Wars prequels technically count for this exercise. Argue with me all you want, but they were made after the originals, and they nearly ruined the franchise for me. It wasn't until the most recent awakening one that I actually started feeling ok to become a Star Wars fan again.

I certainly am not holding my breath for a "Godfather IV", despite the fact the first two were all-time classics. I am not even saying that III was nearly as bad as many listed here but at the end of the day...... meh, it was just a movie. How they caught lightning in a bottle with "Godfather II" is still an amazing accomplishment.

It's kind of like the poor sap that will have to follow Favre/Rodgers one day. What are the odds of 3 HOF QB's in a row?

Wait..Ghostbusters was great?

I agree with this. Never saw Highlander but I can say for sure that the Matrix sequels are so bad that they make me enjoy the original less. Only movies I can say that about.

Do appreciate Monica Bellucci in leather though.

Im not proud to admit i liked Maze runner, but I'm a sucker for those kinds of movies.  And it serves me right because maze runner should have sucked worse than it did and even then it wasn't really "good" in the sense that a movie is "good", and you can't really ruin a teenagers save the world movie because they are all awful.    But maze runner 2 lifted the curtain to reveal that the reason the huge maze was built was becausebecause wait here's a huge pile of turds on the screen now watch them squish together now here's somebody pooping into the pile.   Oh man that's a messy one. Also there's no maze in this movie so if you were hoping there would be one forget it.   Instead theres a ridiculous premise and wait here comes a giant ### hovering over the turd pile I think it's going to poop.  Wait for it.  Now just a bunch of farts.  So anyways weird conspiracy and mutants and a gang of scrappy rebels that has been waiting for this group of even scrappier teenagers to save wait here's another button with a squishy turd and it's leaning,  it's leaning. .. oh look it tipped over and now it's kind of half rolling,  half jello sliding it's way down the side of turd mountain until an unsatisfying plop before it hits the bottom.

The first Bourne movie was very good, but that last one became absurd. Kind of like Bourne could take on the entire planet. I still remember the part where drives off one roof to another, at least 1 story lower, gets out and proceeds to beat everyone up without hesitation. While it didn't ruin the entire series, the last one just flat out stunk.

Monica Bellucci in tight leather may have been the only awesome decision of either movie.

This doesn't need to be about sequels that killed franchises. This is just about movies that ended your love of a franchise. Maybe even to the point where you dislike the movies that came before, not just those that followed.

I submit to you, Highlander 2: The Quickening. I watched this garbage in theaters. I still have no idea what I saw. To date, it is the last time I have viewed any Highlander movie, including the first. Plot summary taken from Wikipedia:
I just watched Highlander for the first time in 30 years with my 11 year old.  It turns out it blows.  Weird catchphrase dialogue, awful fight choreography, terrible effects, nonsensical story.  The only good things were the only guy with a real Scottish accent playing the only Spaniard in Scotland and Clancy Brown being a punk to non-Highlander characters.

What does "baffled" mean?
