I anyone planning on watching this? I read all the books and loved them. My son has read most of them so thinking we will try watching it together. But I have a feeling its going to be a disappointment compared to the books. Have not read anything about the show just saw previews on TV.

Haven't read the books but the commercials make it look worth checking out. I'll be watching if I like, remember and stuff.

I thought the books all read the same, just change the main characters and the special magicky thing from one book to another. That being said, I enjoyed them when I was younger through 3 or 4 of them. I'll probably watch it when it hits Netflix.

I think I read they're skipping the first book altogether and starting with Elfstones
yep
Probably a good idea since the first book is basically Lord of the Rings.
I read the first one when I was a kid... the LoR ripoff was way too obvious and heavy-handed, even for a kid.
Somehow I don't think I ever read the first one or maybe I just thought it sucked and completely forgot it or maybe I am just old and forgot it.

It was really bad. I read it when it came out and was jonesing for anything Tolkien-ish (late 70s, there wasn't much), but even then I knew it was awful.

Elfstones is much better, though Brooks - who has good ideas - couldn't write a character who wasn't a stock YA archetype if his life depended on it.

I've ditched cable, so I won't see this until some streaming service picks it up, but I will give it a chance unless it gets horrific reviews

I read Sword of Shannara when I was younger. Had to force myself to finish it because I'd heard that they were great books, and I kept hoping it'd get better. Never tried to read another.

I do plan on giving the show a try, though. Looks like it could be good.

I loved The Sword of Shannara. Yes, it's story is a lot like LotR. But I feel it was a better read than LotR. I found LotR a chore to get through, bad dialogue, action scenes were given the Seinfeld "Yada, yada, yada." treatment. And all those songs just forced into the story.

WOW

This was extremely well done. Loved every minute of it. Absolutely ALL IN!

DVR set, though I have to admit a well done Dragonlance series or movie trilogy would own me and my wallet.

Off to a very good start.

Really high production value for something on MTV too.

Elf princes is hawt.

Yes, I like the casting. Princess is pretty spectacular in all ways. Only thing I know Wil from was a short stint on Arrow for about 2 episodes which I thought he nailed enough he really stood out in it. Allanon's actor was a major character on Arrow as well.

I can tell from the promo material that the show will destroy my childhood memories. Avoiding it like the plague.

it's a hackneyed book for kids embarrasingly ripping off LotR  LotR has some quality prose even if some of it gets sloggish.

but yeah sure- Shannara is an easier read.

Granted I did read it as a kid. Maybe it doesn't hold up now that I'm older. That happened with the Narnia books. I hated them when I re-read them a few years ago.

I read most of them and have it recorded. Not reading past this first post.

I made it about ten minutes. Wanted to like it too.
I'm further in, but, feeling the same way. Acting is awful. They felt the need to have music playing nearly the entire time in the background. I love the genre and wanted to like this, but, don't think I'll make it through the entire episode. Maybe the first battle scene will change my mind.

Watched the first four episodes with my son. I have no desire to continue with the rest of them. Years ago I read the first two trilogies in the series so I was kind of looking forward to this but my hopes were dashed before the end of episode one.

Acting was terrible and wooden, especially elf princess who uses her eyebrows to show emotion. The love triangle and kitten fighting between elfie, Will and the rover girl is soo sophomoric and treacly it'll give you a toothache. And it seems as though all the main characters are played by the cast of road rules and the real world; twenty somethings who look pretty but offer no depth.

And did anyone else notice how quickly characters were able to appear in one setting after being miles away in some other part of the realm in the previous scene? Most of them traveled by foot but were able to cover theses vast distances in what seems like hours or days. They just sort of show up in the castle in the morning, make there way to druids keep in the afternoon then reappear in the castle by nightfall. According to the map these should be weeks or months long journeys. Maybe those maps were drawn to scale.

Overall this show is pretty much what I should have expected from an MTV production, shallow and silly.

Fun fact: Terry Brooks was my neighbor up until about a year ago, had a million+ $ home, view of Seattle skyline. Must have gotten a good payout for these movies as he recently built a huge waterfront home south of Cannon Beach. His wife REALLY likes the color purple to the extent that when they sold their Seattle home the interior had to be completely repainted and most surfaces renovated.

Just watched the first 4 episodes with the wife and enjoyed it. Wife loves fantasy stuff and she is really enjoying it.

Went in not expecting particularly good acting given the genre/network so maybe that helped.

Some decent amount of promise there but I think being on Mtv is ruining it. It seems to me that they are going out of their way to have this relatable to teenagers which makes it very hard to digest or take serious in terms of good Fantasy/Sci-Fi.

Well my thirteen and eleven year old girls like it , so I will be watching the whole thing more than likely. Erteria actress is really bad. Amberlee and Wil are dealable, Allanon I really like but that maybe because Allanon was probably my most favorite character in pretty much any book I read growing up. Not sure why Allanon had to have what is essentially a lightsaber for a sword, I get it might be easier special effect than shooting flames out the tips of his fingers but to direct a rip off from Star Wars I think.

Travel is definitely quick. We maybe in safehold by episode 5 at this rate. My four lands geography maybe off but I thought the Silver river was in the east, Wing Hove the far West but Wil dove into the Silver river to get healing mud (?) When coming back from wing Hove. Strange. Right now just thinking we don't need to see them traveling and if I remember right the Ellcrys was sick for a long time before normal demons were escaping in large numbers.

Definitely a MTV production though. Be prepared for emoting teens and modern slang if you're going to watch.

I DVR'd it and finally got to watch it the other day. I was expecting some crappy SyFy Sharknado type production but I was really surprised at how good it was - from the acting to the SFX. I read the books when I was in high school but damned if I can't remember anything about it.

I'm definitely in on this so far.

Production is solid but the teenagification for MTV is too much to handle. No plans to watch any more than the first two episodes that I did- which is a bummer because with the story and production, I think I would have enjoyed it otherwise.

I'm very confused, as usual. They aired the first episode the other night, and I taped it on the DVR. But there was something saying you can watch the next 2 episodes on the app before they air (which I really have no interest in doing). I set the next episode to tape (all the new episodes at this point) but there are people in here saying they've seen the first 4 episodes. What gives with this kooky show? Is it too much to ask to just air one episode a week?

I saw it on Demand. They had episode 1 and 2 packaged in the first showing. Watched most of it until my wife came home with the kiddos- so the last few minutes went unwatched.
