Keep this as short as possible:
5 months ago we put a deposit on a beach house for a week. We were splitting it with my FIL/MIL. I paid the entire deposit which was 50% and roughly $2500, we still owe another $2,500 upon arrival. Within 3 weeks of the reservation the deposit becomes non-refundable. Last week my MIL's father fell and broke his hip, he was in the ICU, but has since been upgraded and is now in stable condition. He has basically been stuck in his bed for the greater part of the last 5 years with Parkinsons to begin with. My MIL wants to stay close to her father and the beach house is a 3 hour drive away. We leave Monday and saw them today, they mentioned they might try to make it down depending on her father by weeks end for the last 3 nights. We first discussed this last week and she said she would give is the money if we couldn't find a replacement for them, which we couldn't on such short notice. Today not a mention of the money.
Little backstory too, we got a check for Xmas from them for $1000 which we never cashed and just bought them Fleetwood Mac tickets for her birthday which were $650.
Would you take this one on the chin, request the money, stay quiet and hope for the money, split, etc?
