Keep this as short as possible:

5 months ago we put a deposit on a beach house for a week. We were splitting it with my FIL/MIL. I paid the entire deposit which was 50% and roughly $2500, we still owe another $2,500 upon arrival. Within 3 weeks of the reservation the deposit becomes non-refundable. Last week my MIL's father fell and broke his hip, he was in the ICU, but has since been upgraded and is now in stable condition. He has basically been stuck in his bed for the greater part of the last 5 years with Parkinsons to begin with. My MIL wants to stay close to her father and the beach house is a 3 hour drive away. We leave Monday and saw them today, they mentioned they might try to make it down depending on her father by weeks end for the last 3 nights. We first discussed this last week and she said she would give is the money if we couldn't find a replacement for them, which we couldn't on such short notice. Today not a mention of the money.

Little backstory too, we got a check for Xmas from them for $1000 which we never cashed and just bought them Fleetwood Mac tickets for her birthday which were $650.

Would you take this one on the chin, request the money, stay quiet and hope for the money, split, etc?

Considering how much you spend on dinner regularly, the 2500 shouldn't be enough of a burden on you to cause a rift in the family. If that's big time money to you, that's different.

What really annoys me is a trip to a shore house is now costing more than a trip to Disney. We also just booked an expensive trip to Mexico last month. Her parents are fine with money too.But I agree about not causing a rift and if they offer, I'll split the loss. They know this is non-refundable and I'm basically stuck eating the cost. Otherwise I'll eat the whole thing I think.

Shark move is to just handle it like an adult rather than coming to a message board and posting another LOOK AT ME thread. So you pretty much already failed. Time to change the thread title...

Make them pay. Stupid old people.

what beach?
I'm leaning towards option 4, I'll take it if it comes, but I'm not going to be a #### about it.Cape May, place is heaven for families... Cobblestone streets, ice cream and candy stores everywhere, nice family themed town.

Sucks most bc we were going to have a helping hand with our son and now won't.

I dont understand why you should be expected to eat the cost. Are you their trip insurance. They went into this knowing full well they were splitting the trip with you. If they booked a trip by themselves and had to cancel last minute theyd be out the money. Why shouldnt they be out the money now?

For families? You're thinking of Ocean City.

Cape May is awesome but it's more of a quiet, bed&breakfast vibe to it.

I said this almost verbatim to my wife earlier, but I also don't want to cause a problem with them by pushing for the money. Sorry for arguing with you, it was a stressful week and I lost my cool.

FYI, my SIL lived in Midland until Sandy and the Square is my second fav pizza place. The SI expressway is still the worst highway in the world though.

Never been, but my niece loves it, she's 10... Isn't it better for older kids like her age? My son is only turning 2 in November and Cape !

May has a great vibe for the youngsters eat are like 5-7 and under.

No biggie, apology accepted.

Cape May and Ocean City (I assume Md) are both awesome places. Cape May is definitely quieter.

You don't care about the 1,000 but all of a sudden you want to make a big deal about 2,500. I'm seriously confused. You're apparently well off and this is your kid's grandparents. I wouldn't even think about bringing this up if I were you.

On a similar note, my in-laws just left for a 2 week Alaskan cruise. We put their plane tickets on our credit card. I anticipate they will pay us back but they are old and have poor memory. Either way, I don't intend on saying a word to them or my wife.

The $1,000 was a gift, a generous one which we decided was too much. The $2,500 was an agreed upon dollar amount that they would pay for this vacation months ago. This was expected money for this trip... We would've gotten a hotel room at half the cost without this agreement.

These two things aren't similar in the slightest.

Got it. I still wouldn't make a big deal about it. Let your wife bring it up.

I make my relatives pay me in cash because it's less traceable and I don't feel like going to the bank either.

You should have gotten them to give you $1250 up front. Since you didn't do that, you're screwed.

Weren't you the guy who posted a rant about how rich you were and how your kids are richer than pretty much anyone here in the FFA 10 times over even though they are llke 5 years old?

S.T.F.U already. Nobody wants to hear about a self-proclaimed 1%er complain about money.

There is a thread somewhere on here about politics, I'm sure you know where it is, but just in case I'm giving you the heads up... Go change the world, one FFA'r at a time

Why the apostrophe after the "A"? I think the shark move is to remove it.

With all the responses to "just eat it", this thread is ripe for a title change like "What would you do if George Clooney offered you his penis for one night?". NTTAWWT.

With the Ron Burgundy avatar I love fantasy curses look at me schtick. Keep those receipts coming bud.

Is $5k/week the going rate for a beach house that sleeps two couples and a few kids?
could be. I paid $7k for a 6 bedroom in OBX though
You do a kid per bedroom or two kids per bedroom or what? Decent price difference between 2 couples with 2 kids each vs 3 couples with 2 kids each.
theres really so many factors that go into it, its kind of silly to compare. My place wasnt on the beach but oceanfront. We had 5 couples with only two kids so the cost was fairly low per family
