Like it. Couldn't go wrong with this pick I think. Upshaw is a stud who will play across from another stud. Nice work!Fielder to Detroit beetches!Pass Rush, Pass Rush, Pass Rush
Whomever you talk to or read, this is widely acknowledged as the biggest failure on the Packers this year. The DLine was completely unable to get a decent rush, forcing the Packers to either blitz or pray the coverage holds.
At this point you could go DE, DT or OLB and you would improve the team. I see Courtney Upshaw, Whitney Mercilus, Brandon Jenkins, Nick Perry and Andre Brown as all legitimate choices here, and if they were all still available I would not be surprised if TT listened to offers to trade down a couple of picks.
However, for our purposes they are not trading, so that leaves the Packers taking……………………
The Green Bay Packers, with the 28th pick of the 2012 draft, select………
Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama!
Upshaw is a versatile player, having done 5, 3 and even 2 point technique at Bama. Excellent pass rusher, even stronger on the run, and still is capable dropping into coverage. Being paired with Clay Mathews on the other side will free up Clay from his double and even triple teams. Expect the Packers, with this pick, to be able to at least double their sack total from 2011.

22. Nick Perry, DE, Southern Cal*: Upside is also the key word with Perry. The 6-3, 260 pound pass rusher led the Pac-12 in sacks and seems to be just scratching the surface of his potential. With no bowl game for USC and Perry having already committed to the draft, he's getting a jump start in preparing for workouts. Based on the explosiveness evident on tape, that could lead to some eye-popping numbers.

That defense was already really good. Can't wait to see Smith in the full time OLB role. 14 sacks as a part timer is amazing.SF 49ers #30
Sanu and Alshon were obvious targets to improve the offensive playmakers after last game. Plus, for this mock it would have been an easy/lazy pick to make. However, I'm still in the camp that thinks (FA) Joshua Morgan is an above average WR2 and that WR can be addressed in FA. I think SF and Harbaugh will be a very attractive destination for a FA WR, and that Harbalke will address the lines.
Gilmore was hard to pass up at CB, as Spencer is on his way out and there is not much depth after Culver (thanks for getting beat by a stiff like Manningham, Brock). Would have liked to see Janoris fall. I'm still 2nd guessing passing on Gilmore. The only reason I'm not taking him is because the NFC West is turning into the new Black and Blue division with the direction of Seattle and StL.
I don't think any interior lineman are worth the pick here, and although I'm ready to throw wasted 2nd round pick Chilo Rachal away, I'm not sure what Harbalke thinks of him.
Aldon was the boost we needed to the pass rush and hopefully can improve his all-around game. Haralson remains stout against the run but supbar as a pass rusher. Former bust Ahmad Brooks really came on this year, but he's a FA. Thought about Mercilus, but this guy has more upside. I think he's going to blow up at the combine and would provide an amazing bookend to Aldon.
You can never have enough pass rushers, especially an atheletic freak like
USC OLB/DE Nick Perry

Konz will be a Titan if he makes it that far. I would have considered trading up if it were allowed. Simply put, the Titans need to enable CJ and protect Locker.1.17 - Peter Konz, C/G - WisconsinThe Lions say "Damnit!" to this pick as they were looking forward to finally ousting Raiola!
I like this kid, and he's somewhat local. Decent consolation prize. If Nick Perry becomes a 49er, that will be one of the scariest defenses around. As a Browns fan this is a guy I'd love to see beside Phil Taylor to help shore up that awful run defense.Don't want to step on any discussion of the Chicago pick but...
Via PM:
1.20 - Tennessee Titans - Dontari Poe, DT
Great Pick. Hopefully Brewer can move in as we replace McKenzie and eventually Diehl. Getting Beatty back next year should also help out. I'd like to see some competition for Baas as well from this draft.NY Giants will take OT Mike Adams Ohio StateAdams brings some youth to an aging line. Soon the Giants will need to have replacements ready for their established linemen. Adams hand size and arm length are the size that teams look for at the tackle spots. He has shown he can get to the second level with his run blocking and has solid foot work. This was the player I targeted since getting the Giants as my team to pick. Recently looked at the OT from FSU, Zietler from Wisconsin and Glenn form Goergia. In the end Adams was the best fit to an aging line.
You didn't finish the obviuos thought. Can we assume New England trades this pick? AND that every NFL talking head falls over themselvers heaping praise on Bill Belichick because Bill is smarter than everyone else and he can NEVER be criticized for trading down even if he winds up with six picks in the top 100 and only gets one starter like Nate Soldier from a pick he dished for Pro Bowl Richard Seymour. Can we assume New England trades this pick?
Why? The rush LB from Illinois wouldn't look shabby here.Belichick may not be able to help himself though and draft Fleener here so he can have the TE Trifecta! Can we assume New England trades this pick?

It is, but I wouldn't be real happy if this happens. I think there are other places they can go without reaching (the Clemson LB that RL mentioned, for instance). I'm not sure if Kindle ever pans out and the Ravens desparately need another speed rusher/LB type. Baltimore's LB corps is in need of an athletic upgrade - Lewis has slowed down, Johnson really slipped the 2nd half of the year, and Ellerbe/McLain just aren't all that good.Ozzy picks by the BPA method. I'm not sure if Miller is that player, but the logic is sound.
I like Miller as much as anyone but I think Hightower would have been a tremendous pick here. I'm a little surprised he fell this far. Probably the best ILB in the draft not named Kuechly. He would get to play beside arguably the greatest LB of all time and no one better to learn from. I like BPA drafting but I think you kinda have to group players of similar talent levels/upside/etc as well. If one of those group players fits a need that you have then you have to take him unless the BPA is just a ridiculous talent too good to pass. Maybe he is thinking that Ricky is done and they have to have some insurance for Rice in the event of FA/injury. If that's the case then go for it.It is, but I wouldn't be real happy if this happens. Far be it from me to question Ozzie/DeCosta - those guys forgot more about evaluating talent overnight than I ever knew. I've just gotten to the point where - unless you're staring at an uber-elite talent at RB (Faulk, AP) - I'd rather spend a 1st-rounder somewhere else.I like Miller as much as anyone but I think Hightower would have been a tremendous pick here. NE has Mayo and Spikes inside but only Andre Carter provided a pass rush this year. You gonna count on Mark Anderson again? I think Whitey Mercilus is the pi k here. JMO.I believe they'd jump at this:1.32. New England Patriots - Dont'a Hightower, LB - AlabamaAnd via PM, the Rams take:2.01 - Cordy Glenn, OG - Georgia
Spikes is nothing special and could easily be supplanted by Hightower, who can be moved all over the place. I thought about Mercilus, but I'm not sure it'd be as easy to transition to a 3-4 for him (even though the Pats run a hybrid defense).NE has Mayo and Spikes inside but only Andre Carter provided a pass rush this year. They could definitely use a CB as well.Spikes is nothing special and could easily be supplanted by Hightower, who can be moved all over the place. Thought about that. They seem to always be drafting cornerbacks. I was considering him for the Lions at 23. But I opted for what I thought was closer to a sure thing instead of another underweight, high ceiling LB. That hasn't always worked out too good for Detroit. He could end up being fantastic, or just a track star in pads. From the Senior Bowl reports I've read, Zach Brown is FAST and would definitely be in consideration for the Vikes' 2nd round pick as E.J. Henderson will likely be gone and they don't have much depth at any LB position.
This...honestly guys I've seen enough of him here to be unimpressed. not very good at the point of impact. Look at the footage and count the whiffs.....I was considering him for the Lions at 23. It would be interesting but I sure hope not. By taking Sanu at 1.22 we missed out on the high end DT's in the draft. I would have much rather had Brockers, Worthy, Cox or even Upshaw at OLB which is also a fairly weak spot. That D-line had got to get better. I don't see a ton of value left at DT at this spot. Maybe Brandon Thompson from Clemson. First choice for me would Mercilus Whitney or Andre Branch - Instant starter at DE. This would be a nice young group of D-linemen with Taylor and Sheard. Second maybe address a weak LB crew. I like Jackson but an impact OLB would be nice. He not rated extremely high on a lot of boards but Sean Spence from Miami is the real deal and the #3 OLB in my mind. I'd like to wait and take a look at a guy like Keenum in the 3rd.This would be an interesting spot to see the Browns roll the dice on a Tannehill or Nick Foles.
He sounds similar to Brooks Reed who had some of the same criticisms. But speed kills in the NFL and sometimes it's just as good to be in a position to simply disrupt the play as it is to be the one making it.I was considering him for the Lions at 23.
