Shark Pool Mock #2 - "What teams WILL do" - Spots open. (1 Viewer)

The two ways the Rams could go: OG Kyle Long or S DJ Swearinger

Kyle Long is the brother of Chris Long. He's a physical specimen at 6'6, 313 that can move very well for someone in his position and his strength is pass protection, which Sam Bradford would appreciate. He could be BPA with his skillset. But he is inexperienced, and he also needs a solid support system around him to keep a lid on his knucklehead tendencies.

DJ Swearinger would fill a major need for the Rams. He plays with a mean streak, a high motor, and is very well respected by his teammates. He's the kind of guy that Fisher loves. The issue is if the Rams gamble on getting their guy in the 3rd, as safety is a deep position this draft. Shamarko or Phillip Thomas could be available in the 3rd.

In conclusion, it's very easy for the Rams to go either way here. But the need to make sure Bradford is protected, the fact that Long is BPA, that safety is deep, AND the family connection, Long gets the slight edge.

With the 46th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select...Kyle Long, Offensive Guard, Oregon
I hope DJ can avoid being a walking personal foul in the NFL. Great player who reads the game well and makes some bone crushing hits. You all should look up the time he got three 15-yard penalties in a row, ending with throwing the ball in the stands after a pick-6.

Are any other safeties besides Vaccaro off the board?

Carrying forward to top of page so we don't have to go back-and-forth to check who has recently beent selected.

I havent spoken to EG72 about this pick, but I think he would agree with me... not sure if you want me to make it or if you want to wait for EG

Dallas could go multiple directions here too. They have major needs at OL, DL, and Safety. In this mock, they went DL in round 1. They still have to fill the other spots.

In looking at their official visit list, which historically has been a strong indicator of interest for the team, they've brought in many OL prospects that are targeted to go in the first 75 picks and almost none thereafter. In contrast, they have looked at safeties who can reasonably go well into the 4th rounds. In contrast, Elam is the remaining safety in the 2nd tier and there is a material drop off thereafter.

Weighing these various items, i think Dallas ultimately goes OL with this pick, assuming another position in the first. So with that stated, the Cowboys pick:

T. Armstead OG/OT.

Now if Jerry mixes up his Viagra with his regular meds, I could see them go crazy with something like Marcus Lattimore or Giovanni Bernard. But I'll assume Garrett has enough pull to keep Jerry for going too crazy and stay OL.
Dallas may also be considering Warford. However, they seem to want to move towards more mobile linemen who can get out in space. Warford is a power blunt instrument. Armstead is an athlete. Armstead also can play multiple positions, something Dallas can certainly use.

Oh god that sounds awesome. :lmao:

Damn. I've done too many of these things so I lose track of who took who when.

I think RB is the right pick in light of Mingo in the 1st. Maybe WR.

When I updated the board I have the picks that each team has made up to this point in the draft listed underneath.

48. Pittsburgh - Evilgrin 72 -

OLB/DE Barkevious Mingo, LSU.

Pittsburgh taking a RB makes a ton of sense especially since only one has been selected so-far so they'd get the second best RB from the draft which is a great bargain here.

I suggest they would take RB Johnathan Franklin UCLA or RB Giovani Bernard UNC, I know EG likes Le'veon Bell too

I would imagine like Bell later but their is no guarantee that he'll be there since a couple of ofther teams have a need at RB and I think a mini-run will begin soon.

Pittsburgh has an glaring need at running back.

Franklin seems like a no-brainer if they go RB here.

Steelers recently brought in Franklin for a visit, makes sense (Only RB's of note brought in by PIT has been Franklin, Lacy and C. Michael)

Looking good. Patterson sure fell here! Could have actually gone Austin Patterson in the first in this mock. I do like how youve selected so far. Your choices thus far are very much in the realm of "What they will do". I do really like long but am also very interested to see how Rok Watson develops. After an injury riddled rookie season, Word is that he's really become quite the gym rat. Hoping for the best out of Rok. The long family connection and pedigree is fun. They always talk about the "family" atmosphere in Fisher's locker room!!! I like longs versatility to play inside or out and obviously potential athletically.

If the Rams take Long, I think they do so with the intention of making him their starting LG at some point. I know they like Shelley Smith, but that's really about the only other viable LG candidate they have, IMO. Rok Watson was too banged up last year to really develop, and he still may be a project. Plus, I still wouldn't be surprised to see Dahl's contract reworked or to see him cut. Rams still need a RB as well and I don't see it in this draft. I see it in a Cedric Benson or DeAngelo Williams (after he's cut), and the Rams are so hard up against the cap, they need to make room somewhere.

I don't think the Rams are that depleted at WR that they'd go with both Austin and Patterson. They still have needs (and notice how I didn't even fill the safety need yet).

I still think the Rams could make a trade in the 1st and if they do, all this changes. I think we did establish that the Rams would have better luck dealing from 16, which would be made easy if Tavon Austin and/or Kenny Vaccaro are gone. If one or both are there, it becomes a dilemma.

Giants need offensive line help, must get younger. Im pretty sure this guy isnt already taken: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky

In the real draft he won't be here imo. The more i think about it, the more i think the titans take either Cooper in the first or warford in the 2nd.

Like I said Bears need to get younger all over the D. From what I know about his Jags D, Mel Tucker will look for some beef on the line, something Lovie never cared about.

2.50 Bears - Jesse Williams, DT Alabama

Swearinger is not afraid to deliver and celebrate a big hit. That stuff probably won't fly in the NFL but I love watching his highlights. He has the enthusiasm of a young Ray Lewis.

sf was trying to trade up to get him. great pick

Here is another clip of his upside and downside:

I may have overvalued him in the 2nd round. For instance, a_rackowski had DJ going in the late 3rd. I wonder if his "exuberance" will turn teams off enough for him to slide to the 3rd.

I still think he'd be a fabulous fit in STL, though. Like I said, Fisher loves guys like him and would rather tone a guy down than try to stick a caddle prod up someone else.

Sorry for the delay, didn't realize I was selecting for the Skins (I asked but never got a response).

Anyways, the Redskins have huge needs in the secondary and offensive tackle. They didn't have any money to address those needs in free agency, so they need to take the BPA at those positions.

Lots of tackles are off the board. I'm hoping in the real draft that Armstead will fall here, as his athleticism would make him a perfect target for the zone blocking scheme.

Lots of safeties gone too. I'd love for a guy like Cyprien or Elam to fall, but they obviously didn't here.

Considering how many corners have been taken, I'm surprised this guy is still there, as this guy is #4 on my board for them.

Without further adieu, with the 51st pick in the 2013 NFL draft the Redskins select Johnthan Banks, CB.

Sounds like he'd be worth the gamble. In our exercise here, this is Carolina's pick.

2.48 - Johnathan Franklin, RB - UCLA

Okay. I know we didn't wait THAT long, but this makes too much sense.
Jesse Williams still on the board makes MUCH more sense. Still decent RBs to be had in the 3rd and 4th.

I think this is a pick the Bengals will use on BPA once they land an OL and RB in some order the first 2 picks. I don't see a clear BPA though so I think they would at least consider taking their pick of the safeties which most assume will be their 3rd rounder. If they have a clear favorite among Thomas, Shamarko, Wilcox, Swearinger, Rambo, they could go ahead and take him. I don't think so though, so they'll stockpile a corner.

Darius Slay cb 2.53

I actually think the BPA right now is a safety.

Miami Dolphins select S Eric Reid at 2.54

A very athletic safety that some have as high as the first round. The Dolphins don't have the best starters at safety or any depth really. Reid should be able to displace Clemons and start during this season. Joins Trufant to make this secondary much stronger and talented. I could see DE or TE being picked here as well.

2.55

Green Bay selections Jonathan Hankins DT Ohio State

With Pickett being 33 and Worthy injuring his ACL late in the season Dline is definitely an area of need. Debated hard between Hankins and Jenkins but with with Hankins due to his versatility. Capers seems to like those guys that can either play inside or out. Hankins fills a huge need for the Packers.

2.56 Kawann Short, DT - Purdue

Part of the reason I like Short here is that he's a good run stuffer and with the loss of Alan Branch to free agency the Seahawks are looking to fill that role with a cheaper body. Many will think the Seahawks should choose one of their other needs, such as WLB or RT, but I don't think they will use an early pick on either of these positions instead opting to continue to improve the D-line with young talent.

To be 100% honest, I at least partially passed on Reid because I don't think he'll be there. I think this pick is a complete crap shoot though because there are so many safeties projected in the 3rd round and there is a really good chance their other needs (OL/RB) are already met by the time we get to 53. To guess this pick right, you'd have to know which players the Bengals are high on at positions where they've already got starters.

You might be right that Reid is BPA though and they do like big safeties. Given that he was there in our scenerio, maybe I should've done it. Oh well.

I have seen Reid all over the place, even slipping into the third in a couple of mocks. I'm not sure why there is so much variability with him.

Interesting. Call it a gut feeling, but I still don't see him as a fit for the Bengals. Your gain at 54 I guess in this scenerio.
