If Cuban sees an idea he truly believes in, he'll pay what it takes to get it. I like that about him. He really won't sit there and nickel and dime the guy.I enjoy the show.Damon is the worst at calling out people on valuation. He's the one that spearheads the "get the most for the least."While I think Cuban is the best as he is willing to offer more based on potential sales.
I completely get it, I just have no problem with them picking and choosing who to invest in based on whether they can get a great deal or not. You can't underestimate the exposure these companies get just by being on Shark Tank though, or by being involved with one of the Sharks. Any business they call on now to help one of their investments knows there is a potential for them to be featured on national TV as well in a followup story. Is that worth the discount? That is for the companies to decide.Personally I enjoy the show and find it to be both inspirational (stories of entrepreneurs/inventors finding success, with/without the sharks) and a bit educational (although obviously the process is dramatized for TV.)My problem is they want the best of both of worlds, they are very greedy and you are saying they have a right to be.They favor companies with high sales, but steer clear of companies that already have outside investors. If they already have outside investors they insist on getting in on the valuation of the company back when sales were 1/10 as much (see Miso Media). When I watch it I can't help but think the sharks are the ones with the huge egos since they feel they have a right to get into their time machine to go back in time and demand to be treated to the sweet deals their first round investors received as a Monday morning QB after they know sales have gone up 1000%. I think you give them too much credit when they offer these grossly discounted valuation offers without needing to take on the risk to get the company from x in sales to 10x in sales. As for the Sharks "buying at a discount", um...yah. That is why they are sharks and one of the reasons they have money to invest. They don't have to pay "retail" (i.e. full valuation) and so shouldn't. In fact, show me any VC investing in companies like the ones they get pitched, and if they are paying full valuation, they won't be VCs for very long unless they get really lucky before they go broke.
I remember seeing that episode, and thinking that Mark and Kevin made a great deal.I really think this market is going to take off, but I think it is going to happen when the price comes down from the $150-$200 range into the $75-$100 (and up) range so the average home owner starts purchasing and installing them. However, for now, I think pricing them at a premium (compared to existing locks) is a great strategy particularly when you are talking about a replacement lock. Personally, I don't care for the Lockitron "bolt-on" solution, as it looks cheap, and while you and I know that the lock underneath is what is protecting your house, people in general don't like to entrust their home security to things that look cheap. And, the people that can afford the premium, don't want a tacky looking, plastic box on their doorknob (IMO). I hope they come up with a better looking model, and quickly, for their sake, cause I do want to see Lockitron succeed also.Big fan of the last pitch on this episode:

Unfortunately for the Sharks they screwed up on this one (if their DD did not figure this out prior to inking it) since Lockitron is going to kick their ### in the marketplace since there is no need to replace the hardware in the doors.
Lockitron has a bigger market though: owners + renters whereas the model on ST (forget the name) is more appealing to home owners only. I agree the model on ST would be be a better choice if I wanted to replace the entire lock especially given lockitron's $179 price tag.I remember seeing that episode, and thinking that Mark and Kevin made a great deal.I really think this market is going to take off, but I think it is going to happen when the price comes down from the $150-$200 range into the $75-$100 (and up) range so the average home owner starts purchasing and installing them. I thought Damon and Rob had great points though-- who's going to carry these things around in their pocket? Not a coffee drinker, but those things are genius. Probably gonna go buy a couple of sets for my mom and her fiancé
What would be stopping them from making a thermos with this product in the lining? They don't just have to be the beans.I thought Damon and Rob had great points though-- who's going to carry these things around in their pocket? Not a coffee drinker, but those things are genius. Yeah, I'm a pretty big coffee drinker, and I can't see myself buying those things.I thought Damon and Rob had great points though-- who's going to carry these things around in their pocket? Not a coffee drinker, but those things are genius. To their benefit, they did present it as using 5 at once and they explained why it is better than just an insulated thermos - insulated thermos would only keep the liquid at the much higher temperature whereas the joulies would reduce the temperature and keep it near 140 for a longer period of time. That being said, seems like a limited market like for truckers or people that do a lot of driving and drink lots of coffee while driving.I think it would be possible for them to create a thermos with the technology inside, it would be similar to attaching them to the sides of the thermos (recessed).I haven't watched Shark Tank yet, but it sounds like you guys are talking about Coffee Joules. If so, they were on kickstarter and the link I shared has a review that shows their effect is pretty minimal.
However, my wife is already figuring out how many of the hanging garden units can fit in our dining room. That product is going to bank.
How much did you pay for them? Didn't they say they sell for around $50?Is this the product that Cuban said he was approached about before? I wonder why he passed on it then.Mu sister actually bought the Joulies for our parents this Christmas. I haven't gotten any feedback yet. Good episode so far.
Yes. They were $50 for 5. The product Cuban was pitched before were the urban planters. How much did you pay for them? I've been waiting on the price to come down on these for over a year... but still pretty much the same price. That liquid nitrogen ice cream is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I'd pass in a heartbeat.'Psychopav said:Great episode last night. Joulies, the hanging garden, frozen nitrogen ice cream...And the negotiations were very interesting, especially the Joulie negotiation where the guys had to decide between giving up the equity and giving up the royalty. Solid episode.
Yeah, the hooded pillow was ridiculous. But at the same time, I would think the same thing if someone walked in with a Snuggie so maybe they just have the dumb American public down. It is interesting to see the products from season 1, which were just average Joe products. Now, the products are so much more evolved by the times the Sharks see them that most of the time, they are just there to use their resources and networks to get the job done. They hardly have to actually work with the others to actually develop the product. The Grinds stuff was also pretty interesting. I have no idea what the chick with the dry cleaning bags did with the $900k.The last pitch tonight was interesting. I hated their first product (hooded pillow), but loved the 2nd product (hooded neck pillow). The neck pillow was one of the few products I've seen on the show that I'd be interested in buying.
Yeah. The idea wasn't as bad as the finances. They were intrigued until they heard about the finances which was just a joke. I think Barbara's point wasn't so much about hanging but about keeping it in the plastic but knowing what is in the bag. I know often times when I dry clean something, I just leave it in the bag b/c it seems to keep it less likely from getting wrinkled. And on the roads, the plastic bags often seem easier to use.The one thing that did interest me with the bag was the fact that you could just turn it inside out and make it a laundry bag so then, as you do, just drop it off. This wouldn't really work with suits that you just throw in a laundry bag but for shirts and other things, it would be fine. I think it had a very small niche in the market but nothing special and nothing to get into the kind of arrangement she was. And like Robert said, his dry cleaner used these and then charged him when he lost it. That could take off assuming the whole industry does it.the garment bag was a
And I have one of them. My cleaners gave me one for free. They wrote my name and phone number on the inside, so when I drop off a load of dress shirts, I don't have to talk to anyone or wait for a claim ticket, I just drop off the green bag, then the next day pick it up with my clothes hanging inside and they autobill my credit card. The one thing she didn't mention on the show, to Barbara's point, was that there's a zipper up the side so you can easily unzip it to take all the hanging clothes out and put them right in the closet, you don't keep them inside the bag all the time. I empty mine out, turn it upside down, and hang it on a doorknob to stuff shirts in the next day.The system works great for me, but damn is she being bent over on the
side of it. Honestly, I wouldn't pay for one myself because... why bother? The cleaners charges me the same no matter if it's my bag or theirs. The fact that they save $30/yr on plastic should be enough for them to give 'em away.
My dvr cut off....did the 18yr old get a deal.Drop Stop, the foam thingy that goes between your car seat and center console is friggin genius. Lori is gonna make those guys rich in no time. The Lionfish guys are right, they are a nasty invasive species. Ive read multiple articles about them that encourage killing any Lionfiish people come across, and I hear it does indeed taste great. It'd be awesome if they could get the public educated about it because eating them is a great way to curb the population. The 18 year old with the sugar scrub had all her ducks in a row and had great answers to all of the shark's questions. Shes gonna be a shark herself one day.The shrink wrap guy was goofy as all get up.
Yup. Cuban offered the amount she was asking for (I dont remember the amount) for 33% stake (coming in she was offering 15%). She countered with same dollar amount for $25%, he said no and she took his offer for 33%.My dvr cut off....did the 18yr old get a deal.Drop Stop, the foam thingy that goes between your car seat and center console is friggin genius. Me too. I think he made a great deal. $250k and let Cuban send him checks for life. Done.I was glad the awkward wrapping paper guy made a deal. hope he gets rich.
Too bad Cuban can't try the stuff on his son to see if it really works before jumping in. If it is not a big deal and is like other scrubs on the market,we'll never hear about it from Cuban. Chic will get rich because Cuban is in on it.I felt bad for the wrapper guy. He is so not into the public and couldn't give a decent pitch. Glad he has a deal. Speaking of that pitch, is this the realization of it?
