Wow, if they go into 2008 with SAlex as RB1 a lot of folks who have written him off will be surprised.

Also, Hackett is as good as gone, and Branch expected back at some point during season.

Conversation with Tim Ruskell

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Posted by Frank Hughes @ 04:25:35 pm

On the verge of free agency opening, here is what emerged from a 37-minute conversation with Tim Ruskell:

* The team is very tight on the $116 million salary cap because of Marcus Trufant's franchise tag. In fact, to make any moves in free agency, there is going to have to be some other movement on the roster in terms of cutting players or restructuring contracts.

* Ruskell does not anticipate either cutting Shaun Alexander or asking him to restructure his contract. He said they are convinced that Shaun can return to his former exploits, and that the retooling of the running game (Mike Wahle, Mike Solari) will help him get there.

[More:]

* Restricted free agents Leonard Weaver, Lance Laury and David Kirtman were tendered offers, which Ruskell said they would sign. Alvin Pearman was not tendered an offer.

* Ruskell said they do not anticipate Deion Branch missing the entire season. He said he will miss training camp, but based on what the doctors are telling him they fully expect him to be back during the season at some point.

* Negotiations with Josh Brown are ongoing, but Ruskell thinks he is going to test the market. If Brown leaves -- and after speaking with his agent a few days ago it sounds like that is a good possibility -- Ruskell said there are a few free agents they could go after, or a couple guys in the draft that they like.

* D.J. Hackett sounds as good as gone. Ruskell said he told Hackett's representatives to see what he is worth on the market, and the Seahawks would see if they could get to that number. But he also said they love the potential of Courtney Taylor, Ben Obomanu, Jordan Kent and Logan Payne. Ruskell was especially effusive about Payne.

* Jeff Robinson's career as a long snapper is over. Ruskell said he anticipates their next snapper to be a veteran free agent who is let go by another team. There is a chance that a young guy who is not drafted is found, but more than likely a veteran who is let go will be picked up.

* The only pick the Seahawks do not have this year is a fifth-rounder, which was given away for Pearman. Ruskell said he also anticipates getting a compensatory pick, which should be distributed at the end of March, beginning of April. He said he does not know what the compensatory pick will be because the formula is virtually impossible to decipher.

* Despite what I wrote on the blog yesterday about Chris Gray's agent saying he likely will back, Ruskell said he does not know what Gray's future is. He said Holmgren needs to have a conversation with Gray to see where he stands on things. So that is still up in the air.

* Ruskell said he anticipates taking an offensive tackle in the draft because this draft is so deep. It is not that strong at the interior line positions but the tackle spots are strong, and he said it is his philosophy that you should always draft at least one offensive lineman.

* They anticipate naming a running backs coach sometime next week.

I dont care if God himself came down and told me SA was going to be the full time starter for the Seahawks this year, i still wouldnt believe it. The guy has just looked terrible over the last two years, and he is past 30 now.

Translation-we're taking Stewart if he's available. I traded for SA before the beginning of last season, hoping he

would return to form and he was a complete and utter shell of his former self.

The problem is that his "form" is that of a pansy who goes down when someone gets a fingernail on him. The exceptions to that rule was the two years he was in contract years. So I expect to see SA in true SA form. If the line improves then he'll look better but I saw nothing out of him in preseason or the regular season, before and after he hurt his wrist, that makes me think that he is going to be worthwhile. I hope he's on a short leash or at least a big split of carries with MoMo, Weaver and/or a rookie. I thought he would "bounce back" last season but he looked like complete crap every time I watched, regardless of how the line played. It was a poor run blocking OL, but he ran like an old woman with a walker.

I'll be the first to say I was wrong if he shows up this season, but I doubt I'll have to do that.

I agree with the things you guys are saying. I'm just really surprised by the GM's comments since every website opinion I've read had Seattle dumping him.

As a long time owner of SA... they have to be kidding themselves.

While he could return to form in some aspect - he will just fade once again. Silly.

The only thing I can think of is that he's saying this so that everyone isn't POSITIVE they'll take a RB in the first. Maybe gives them some sort of leverage. But that seems silly with the money involved. :lmao:

The thing is, from a dynasty perspective, current Alexander owners have to like this news regardless how they think he'll do in 2008. The alternative (being cut and backing up the RB1 in some other city) would reduce his perceived dynasty value to zero.

With this news there's a chance to unload him for something, since there's always a team desperate for a RB, and maybe someone believing in a big rebound. I think SAlex dynasty owners should wait for this news to filter out and become accepted, then if possible deal him before the NFL draft.

This surprises me. Apparently everyone but them realizes Alexander is done. THey will waste a lot of money on him if they don't cut him or restructure. (I assumed they would force him to restructure). I think they have to go RB early. Even if they think that Alexander has something left, it will be gone soon.

They will waste a lot of money on him if they don't cut him or restructure.
Wrong. They would actually waste more money cutting him this season. By waiting to cut him until next offseason, then can substantially lower the cap hit.
I'm assuming this has to be true, because Tim Ruskell doesn't make many bad decision and keeping SA sure seems like a bad decision on the surface. He can still play but they NEED a starting RB bad.

I was feeling good about the off season for the seahawks. Looks like Ruskells gonna find a way to screw it up. He should cut SA's pay most teams do this when a player trails off. They also should have signed Hackett and cut bait on Branch. He was a mistake. I think Ruskell's letting his pride get in way of his decision making. Hackett looks more like a thousand yard reciever than Branch does. Branch is a midget. We need some damned height on the seahawks!! now our top 2 recievers next year are going to be under 5'10". And no tight ends to speak of.

They better score from outside the 20. They're not going to be out jumping anyone in the endzone. And god knows SA can't get in anymore.

Keeping SA is not a bad decision. Announcing that you're not going to cut his pay is a terrible decision. You're right Ruskell doesn't make many bad decisions, but when he does make one, its usually a WHOPPER!!!

i think alexander could still be good he isn't that old. Many backs do well at 31 i think itis 32 or 33where they drop off fast. His years played aren't too long like 7 years i think.

SA won't get cut, the Seahawks will draft a RB, and SA will have done to him what he did to Ricky Watters. SA could actually have a decent year if the Seahawks don't use a high pick on a RB, but this will probably be his last.

So, since I started this thread a week ago, Ruskell has signed both Duckett and now Julius Jones.

I'm guessing that makes him a liar regarding Alexander. Unless MoMo is cut instead, and he did pretty well last year. Certainly better than SAlex.

Have the Hawks re-signed Weaver yet?

Not yet. Per KFFL: http://www.kffl.com/player/12173/NFL
Seahawks | Weaver drawing interest but likely to return

Sun, 2 Mar 2008 15:10:33 -0800

Frank Hughes, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports the agent for restricted free-agent FB Leonard Weaver (Seahawks) said three teams are genuinely interested in Weaver, but he will likely return to the Seattle Seahawks because teams are scared off by the second-round compensation they would have to give up if they sign Weaver.
