Shaun Hill (1 Viewer)

21 of 28 for 197 yards and a passing and rushing td. It was against the Bengals "defense" but it resulted in a win nonetheless. With Alex Smith being the bust he is, does Hill actually have a shot to snag the job?

How was this kid in college?

I think he's very likely to be the #2 at worst next season.

The problem with Alex Smith is that he was a #1 overall pick. Even if he was for instance, the 10th best QB in camp, he'd be getting every chance to fail.

With the beating that Smith has been handing the 49ers staff in the media, I doubt he's back next year.Way to burn bridges, Smith. I hope you go to Atlanta to compete with Harrington you no talent underachiever.-=kwantam

Shaun Hill will be a #3 QB next year if he is lucky in SF. IMO he does not have a lot of value to a team other than an emergency QB.

Did this kid look as good live as he did on the stat sheet?
He looked very good.-=kwantam
JMO, but I did not think that he looked all that great. It was obvious to me that they were dumbing down the offense for him, giving him a ton of short passes etc. They very clearly focused on the run. That said, he was more than adequate if that is all you want (a dink and dunk passer). He did not make any major mistakes, but he certainly was not going to go out there and win the game for them. Again, JMO.

He looked like Jeff Garcia. In the right system that works just fine.-=kwantam

Here he is, ladies and gentlemen... the guy who still likes Alex Smith. :link: The simple fact is, he has never looked good enough to warrant the pick the 9ers wasted on him, and now he's decided to compound it by whining to the media that Mike Nolan---his champion in SF, who literally got rid of Tim Rattay so that Smith would not have to worry about QB controversy---was being meeeean to him in the locker room.

He's a waste of skin. He's a flimsy David Carr facsimile. Alex Smith sucks.

Didn't they win the game???

I think it's too early to tell.

But through two games, he looks pretty good with a 78.2% completion record, no picks and a 107.4 rating.

True, they *may* have "dumbed down" the offensive playbook, but he did set a record for the highest percentage completion in a QB's first game (min 20 passes.) Sorry for no link; it was posted as a stat during the game.

I say "may* have dumbed down. Until I see a breakdown of short vs long pass plays, I'll assume they did, but not emphatically state it. But I'll take 78.2% completion of 6.9 yards-per-attempt all day long, so keep it dumb if that what it takes.

As for his spot next year... let's see what happens the next two games... but he's clearly heading in the right direction at this point.

You obviously missed my point there. Think of it this way, Kyle Orton won a bunch of games for the Bears a few years ago too.
Unlike Dilfer and Smith......he did give them a chance to win though. Smart plays, good vision, catchable passes, and a guy his teammates felt comfortable in. If you talking about being a fantasy option.....I agree, he's nothing to write home about. But for the Niners, I think he gets a spot next year. and moves up the charts depending on how he closes out these next two games. Definitely Dilfer or Smith are gone next year.

I completely agree with all of this. I may be completely wrong about the guy, and I do not expect him to be their QB of the future, but he certainly looks to be a solid player who could come in and keep things running when needed. I certainly see him holding a roster spot. He does not look remotely like a guy to carry a franchise, but rather like a guy who can come in and play solid football when needed. Sometimes, guys like that get a shot and do something with it. He may be one of those guys. But nothing that I saw out of that game made him look any better than a Johnathon Quinn or Jay Fiedler (who also came in and started in relief and did well during those opportunities). He should have ample opportunity to prove out to be more than that before all is said and done. I think people overreact to one solid game. Todd Collins was NFC player of the week last week, for instance and he has been riding the pine for 13 years or whatever. Hill may be much more than that, but solid play against two bad pass defenses (Minny is good overall defense but sitting at 32nd pass defense today) does not lead me to believe he is the second coming of anything.

Alex Smith isn't very good, but your characterization of the situation is more of an axe to grind on Smith , and way off the target. Smith in his first 2 season got the crap beat out of him behind a sieve of an O-line. He took every snap last season behind that crap O-line. Nolan was the one who jettisoned Rattay because he didn't want a QB controversy, and he signed Dilfer to mentor Smith. When Turner was OC, he was the guy who could communicate best with Smith, and it yielded positive results. Turner isn't there anymore, and Nolan gave the OC job to a guy who is as bad as Tom Walsh, maybe even worse. There is no way he can help Smith. Nolan isn't very good with offense, and he is even worse when it comes to communication with the QBs. If an opposing LB during a Monday Night game sees the QB wincing during a throw, how is it that a his coach can't see the same thing? Nolan put some blame on Smith after that game, and later, threw his QB under the bus by saying Dilfer, of all QBs, played the best at that position since Nolan has been coach, and Smith really had nowhere to turn. This is the guy Nolan pinned the Franchise on. If Smith goes bust, then Nolan wasted 3 years by giving Smith the job after he jettisoned Rattay. He even went as far to say he was gonna be the starter before the season started, but changed his mind during the pre-season. The best coach Smith had was Turner, and Turner was also the best coach the 49ers had last season too. Smith might not be a good QB, but he has done everything Nolan asked him to, and now, Nolan is trying to blame him for his failures at coaching. I mean, he chose Hostler for OC after all.

If you're gonna bash a guy, you should at least give some proper background on the situation. It's all there, and I've only touched the tip of the iceberg. Nolan hasn't proved anything that he can coach without help from an experienced guy like Turner, and he sure as hell can't teach from what I've seen.
