Anyone who watched the game know where Merriman was all game? 2 assisted tackles? Will he bounce back against KC or will they be throwing all day to catch up with SD?

Ordinarily, I'd say you want them throwing all day to give Merriman plenty of pass-rushing opportunity. However, the San Diego secondary remains poor and Cottrell's adjustment recently has been to put more players in coverage rather than look to increase the pressure. Merriman has been dropping off in coverage more than last season and the Chargers have rarely sent more than four men in pass rush over the past two games. It also warrants mentioning that when Merriman did come against the Packers, Chad Clifton, a guy who's above-average but not elite, handled him one-on-one consistently. The Chiefs OL is pretty poor. If Cottrell lets Merriman loose and he doesn't produce, it's officially time to fuss. Remember though, this is what you're going to get with a 3-4 outside backer. Merriman in 2006 and Ware and Wimbley this offseason looked like locks for double digit sacks and all kinds of impact play. Even Antwan Peek and Rosie Colvin looked like decent bets during the preseason. It's been only fits and starts for all of them. Even an elite talent like Merriman is subject to how the rest of the front seven performs. Castillo and Williams get dinged and handled more easily, there aren't as many long passing downs, the secondary remains an issue and Merriman may continue to struggle. You've seen the same thing with Dallas and Ware at times.Somebody may also mention the steroid issue. I think there's enough going on in San Diego that it isn't a major question yet, but if he continues to be erratic in the boxscore, it's going to come up.
