Shipping a car interstate. (1 Viewer)

I've inherited a car thats in CA that I'll need to get to NY. The car is nothing special, but it's free.

I don't have time to drive it here myself (you know lil buddy, I LOVE to drive) so am looking at alternatives including shipping it here.

I'm completely ignorant about doing this.. and appreciate any advice.

What's the best way of getting a car from CA to NY?

There are services out there dedicated to this. Lots of them. Many of them are sketchy, though, and will try to add extra fees. I did this from FL to the northeast last year. Cost about $600. I can probably find who I used if you need.

Tons and tons of car transport services out there. Living in Florida the roads are packed with them in the "spring" and "winter" taking cars to/from the northeast/midwest.

Thank you... Would appreciate it!

Shipped 2 cars from LA to Cincinnati in 2010, totaled around $900 (more than moving our furniture back). For some reason they engaged my Wrangler 4WD (guessing they thought it was the parking brake) and jacked up the alignment. Wish I had paid more for a better service, but I was in a time crunch.

Do your research.

Man if I had the time myself I would totally drive it out there for nothing more than gas, food, lodging and a return flight home.

Me and my late Dad drove his buddy a car from Cali to Chicago one summer when I was in my 20's and it was a blast. We took the train home. Good times.

Should mention, almost all of the services are just brokers. They're connecting the buyers and a bunch of independent transporters and taking a cut.

This is true. There is actually a big problem right now with transport services stealing really expensive cars (supercars, exotics, vintage stuff) and taking them into Mexico. Apparently one of the methods is that the thieves hack into the brokers computers/emails/phones—and once a pick up is scheduled—they contact the buyer and act as if they are the hired transport services and try to arrange picking up the vehicle earlier than the original scheduled time. Once they do this—they take the car, and sure enough—the actual transport services that was hired by the broker shows up only to hear that the vehicle has already been picked up (stolen).

Here is a video that details a similar scam. Apparently this car that was stolen is linked to canelo alvarez.

Is it worth keeping the vehicle and going through this?

Maybe we can start an FBG driving relay thread, start a sign up list, and see if we can manage to get it to you through FFA hard work and determination.

Honestly I'd do a leg of this. I love driving/road trips. Plus, shtick.
im in i will go from lacrosse to beloit and when you get the car there will be a new 8 track installed and a looking glass brandy cassette in there for you free of charge take that to the bank bromigo

Can you imagine the modifications that could be completed by the final delivery?

A couple of years ago we sold a vehicle to someone on the West Coast. We are on the East Coast. She flew a friend of her son here and he drove it back for her. Don't know what she paid him to do this.

part A... that's the bit we're trying to figure out. only hassle in moving it is the cost as far as I can see. I dont' think the mexican cartels are out for a 2017 Honda hybrid with 80k miles.

free car is cool...worth the hassle?... added expense of parking the damn thing (which would have to be not very close to our apt without paying 600-1k per month... not close but somewhat easy to get to is 300/month), insurance, tolls... crap- congestion pricing, etc.

with #1 son heading to college, likely in N East somewhere, it would be nice to be able to drive it around to him when needed. stupid daughter does her tennis, which is also driving around to tournaments, lessons, etc. inlaws are in NoVA- so we'd drive instead of train+uber. family house in MD- same. day or weekend trips would open up for us without the hassle of renting. although there will be the hassle of me going to get the car, pick them up and then in reverse when we return.

as it is without a car, we rent, zipcar or uber as needed. no hassles, sometimes expensive (rentals in NYC are usually 200/day or more).

or we just sell the damn thing. our mover offered 10k for it, whcih we could counter. I don't see buying a used car here... so it would be back to the train/car rental/uber etc. so your "keeping it or not" question is the crux of the whole thing for us.

I googled it. Apparently there are a ton of car transport services.
The wife looked into it briefly... About $1,500.
Insanely cheap.

$800 in fuel leaves $700. Works out to $14 an per hour drive with nothing allocated to maintenance and depreciation. Wonder if people who do this realize they could make $60-$80 an hour painting houses.
They don't haul just one at a time, they use car hauler trailers that stack 5-6 cars...and it may not even stay on the same truck the whole way.

Post something in the facebook pages around you and ask if anyone is going to new york and would like a free ride.
Once all agreed, tell them the situation (you dont wanna advertise they would be driving or people will flock to steal the car).
Make sure car has theft insurance.

If your mover won't budge on price, you will have no problems selling that thing to somebody else. A used Honda hybrid with only 80K miles is a VERY hot item on the west coast, CA especially. Sell it on FB Marketplace/Craigslist and I bet you get a bidding war for it. Could easily get $15K if it's in decent condition and doesn't need a lot of work.

Then put that $15K in a nice CD, get a 4% return, there's your Uber money without the headache of parking, insurance, gas, maintenance.....owning a car in NYC sounds really challenging and expensive!

You can also take it Carmax and see what they'll offer you. I know you don't have time, but it's not a bad option. They give you a bid that's good for 24-48 hours so at least you have SOMETHING in hand as a backstop. I still think you'd get more selling it privately, but the nice thing about Carmax is they do all the paperwork for you and that's a little perk.

What kind of car?
basic Honda hybrid, 15k value.
You are probably better off selling a Honda hybrid that is already in California in California. The emission standards here are pretty strict, and the price of fuel here is very high—so vehicles that are compliant with state standards and that get solid gas mileage tend to command solid values. By the time you factor in the cost of getting the vehicle there—there is a very good chance that you are better off selling here and just using the money to purchase something out there. Sure the Mexican cartel isn’t interested in that kind of vehicle, but a far bigger risk is damage occuring to the vehicle during the transport. That is an outcome that is not uncommon at all—and often times the transport company just says “it was like that when I picked it up” etc…

I mean if he puts it on there then I feel obligated to offer him $5,000 for it everyday from here to eternity, f'n facebook marketplace

Timing is off... But I would LOVE to take my son cross country for a week before he heads to college.

That's likely a hard sell- to the kid, the wife and my office.

I mean.....you could store it until you could pull this off with your son. Your work will allow you to miss some time to spend with your child before he goes off to college, right? Put in for the time now, go find some cheap airfare and pull off the road trip of a lifetime with your boy. It's a damn big country and until you drive across it, you really don't get an appreciation for how big this place is and how diverse it is across time zones.

This is really dated, but it's an excellent read that I think everybody should consume. Peter King tags along with John Madden on his bus from East Bay to NYC and it's a literary treasure. Maybe this will inspire you, GB.

Yeah, I know, it's not perfect, but it's cheap and it's helped me find tenants for the warehouse and sell a car or two. Craigslist is so damn scammy now and it costs like $5 to list anything for sale (at least it does for cars) but it still works. At least for me.

Like the Jewel Man said and you know this too, a used Honda Hybrid in Cali is a hot ticket, man. I think he could get 15k by EOD if he listed it.
