A gunman opened fire Thursday at two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A police officer was shot, and preliminary reports said as many as four people connected to the military may have also been shot.

U.S. officials said the gunman was dead.

The gunman fired 25 to 30 rounds at a military recruitment facility, a U.S. military official said. The gunman then drove about six miles to a Navy and Marines reserve center and opened fire there, officials said.

Chattanooga police said about two hours into the episode that the shooting was over, but they had no immediate details.

The Marine Corps said in a statement: "We are working closely with the U.S. Navy and local and federal law enforcement to determine exactly what happened today in Chattanooga. We cannot confirm any Marine Corps casualties at this time."

Buddies at TN Air Guard base said they were on lockdown due to this. He's hearing 4 marines dead + shooter.

They said they've been feeling like sitting ducks on the base for years... no ability to carry there. One of my buddies there is a competitive shooter (both pistol and rifle) who regularly trains with serious groups. I trust him 100x more with a pistol than some dip#### MP on a power trip up at the gates. :(

Yes this was just a training center, but they've very proactive with lockdowns in cases like this in case of some coordinated attack.

I'm not for eliminating gun free zones in certain public areas, mainly because I am worried that arming certain civilians (like teachers) will cause more tragic accidents than it will prevent horrific crimes. But in this case I think it's reasonable to assume that the military types who are on these bases are going to be more familiar and comfortable around firearms than your average Joe. And if that is the case, and terrorists or crazies are going to keep targeting military bases, then maybe it would make sense to ease some restrictions and let soldiers and personnel carry guns.
