Should Firefighters Carry Guns? (1 Viewer)

Firefighters are often first responders to various emergencies besides fires. With fluid situations and possibly little initial information on the scene they are walking into they may be at risk.

Should firefighters train and carry weapons on their person or maybe have them locked but accessible on the fire trucks to increase manpower if a situation warrants it?

No /Thread

They are there to fight fires and not have to worry about having ammunition on them that could be triggered by the heat. Plus the turnout gear and gloves are not functional for a fire arm.

Maybe if more doctors became lawyers the cost of malpractice insurance would go down and my copay would drop to $5.

:wall: NO.

Fire fighters are usually first responders, so it is a plausible question. However, I don't recall any problem were a firefighter was shot on the scene. So, I don't see where they should be required to carry.

No.

1. It would make them more likely to be considered legitimate targets to the ways of thinking of some folks.

2. They will never have sufficient training.

3. They would find themselves with split attention, a bad scenario when dealing with emergency medical situations.

I suppose the engineers, the drivers of the trucks, could be cross trained or that cops could be assigned to each truck, but I want the paramedic/EMT's to be concentrating on one task only.

My bro in law is a fire fighter stationed in one of the poorest, roughest neighborhoods in Milwaukee, and he deals with a lot more than just putting out fires. Most of their calls address issues relating to mental health, poverty and crime. In these neighborhoods, fire fighters are viewed as a primary resource for residents to address daily problems - things the police may not have time to respond to. They are frequently attacked, even by people they are assisting. They are viewed by residents with distrust and resentment, similar to police. I don't think they need to be armed, but would say the question is not as far-fetched as some seem to think.

This was almost 3 years ago now

Guy set fires and then hid in a high position to kill the firefighters when they arrived.

Happened in my hometown. Sad day.

There should perhaps be a police officer/unit assigned to each fire unit.
that's a much better idea
Sure, just email your mayor and ask him to add a couple dozen new cops to his budget.
i didn't say it would happen. a lot of great and obvious ides do not happen

Ya know, we could save more money if we just had half as many firefighters and worked them twice as hard. Or why not have the cops BE the firefighters, there is a savings!

if they pick up the garbage while they are out there's more savings!

I work in Commercial Operations. It would be cool if I got to bring in a dog or a dolphin trained in Muay Thai Boxing or some MMA #### like that. Also, I want nun chucks.

If they were allowed, our local grocery store would be the most secure place to be.
DID YOU KNOW

maybe you did

that firefighters buy their own groceries? I always assumed that when they were on the clock the city paid for their food, not the case! At least not in my neck of the woods

Last year, FDNY fielded 40,000 calls about people stuck in elevators. That just seems really insane to me.

Another gun in the hands of a good guy is a another win for me. I think firefighters should be able to rank up and wield a gun, it's a crazy world out there and these man have chances to be heroes.

A firefighter prepared to fight through a terrorist attack is a huge asset to all Americans. Pay the man to have the gun.

Maybe you should become a fireman, might make you feel good about yourself. Yeah?
