Ohio state senator, Eric Kearney thinks so.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- It's time for the Cleveland Indians to drop their name and Chief Wahoo mascot, an Ohio state senator says.

Eric Kearney, a Democrat from Cincinnati, introduced a resolution Wednesday that would encourage the baseball team to adopt a new name and mascot, citing racial insensitivity. He also sent a letter to Indians owner Larry Dolan urging a change.

With the Indians in the midst of a four-game series with Cincinnati, Kearney said it's the right time to introduce the resolution. The legislature is on summer break.

American Indians and others have protested the use of the logo for years at the team's annual home opener, complaining that the mascot mocks them and their heritage. It's part of a national debate over the use of Indian nicknames in sports that has regained momentum in recent months, particularly the campaign to get the NFL's Washington Redskins to change their name. In June, a federal trademark board ruled the Redskins' trademarks protections should be canceled because the team name is disparaging to Native Americans.

At an unrelated Thursday news conference, Indians president Mark Shapiro said the Chief Wahoo mascot "represents the heritage of the team and the ballpark" and will remain in place. He added that the team will continue to build and promote the use of the block "C."

Kearney, who said he's a big baseball fan, didn't expect major change right away but said Thursday he's "asking for a discussion to occur." Retiring the Indians' name and mascot would show that much has changed in the 100 years since the name was adopted, he said.

Kearney is the former running mate of Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald. He withdrew from the ticket in December amid questions about tax liens.

Atlanta Braves seems sexist. Can't we just go with Team 1,2,3,etc... I suppose no one would want to be Team 13.
I like the club football team names tbh. Aren't the mascots just fan-given and not part of the team? Atlanta BC, Chicago National, Oakland Athletic Club.

God yes, do it as soon as possible. Go to an Atlanta Braves game and they start doing that chant with the tomahawk chop, f'in embarrassing honestly.

Of course not. I get the argument against "Redskin" given its history as a racial slur. (Language evolves, but still). That doesn't apply here, though. "Indian" is not a slur, and there's nothing particularly racist about Chief Wahoo. If somebody has a problem with the Cleveland Indians, they need to toughen up a bit.

Not sure if you're being serious or making a joke (I don't want to go all fantasycurse here), but a lot of Indians actually do prefer "Indian" as opposed to "Native American." (Obviously the tribal name is always preferred). I didn't know that until I moved to South Dakota.

I thought the Cleveland Indians referred to people from India. ETA: maybe they should just change their mascot to some turban-wearing Sikh or something.

Embarrassing? How so?
Every one is in scrutinized moaning and the over head hand chop in never embarrassing, why would it be?
It seems irrelevant to the conversation here anyway, considering they don't do the tomahawk chop at Indians games.

The only way to not offend anyone is to change all of the mascots to something referring to old white guys.

Cleveland Get Off My Yarders

Atlanta Erectile Dysfunction

Washington Can't Jumpers

Chicago White Sox and Sandals

Pittsburgh Liesure Suits

Arizona Agh!

Thats kind of insulting, given that they are not native to the land, nor was the land called America when they first migrated...

Pretty sure that if Native Americans ( First Nations ) weren't treated as third world citizens and hadn't been duped into giving their land away for wompum, they'd be okay with it.

Oh help me Rhonda!!! No, and no. And the Redskins should keep their name as well. For goodness sakes, the team's original owner was native american (who came up with the name) and the league approved the name..!

Yeah, pretty soon every team is going to have to be some sort of different dinosaur or a color, or a flower, or something stupid.

It shows you just how silly our society has become when we have activist groups trying to get names of professional sports teams changed because a few people THINK the names are racist or whatever.

Even worse, it shows how silly our society has become when JUST A FEW PEOPLE can cause this to happen. One complaint equals one million complaints these days.

Cleveland T-rex's................not gonna lie, I like it.

Though I like the idea of not changing names cause of a few whiney whiners better.

Change it to the Cleveland Major Leaguers in honor of Major League the movie. Call them the Cleveland Majors for short.

Create an alternative hat where you replace the Indian logo with a logo of this picture modified in the look of an Obama "Hope" poster. The hat would be an instant top-seller.

That's the way the world worked back in the 1700's. Hate to break the bad news to people, but this was happening all over the world.

Probably should go with the Cleveland Lebrons or the Cleveland Manziels. That's the only way anyone in that town will pay attention to them for the next decade.

I think the Cleveland Cavaliers need to change their name. Why should a name associated with a bunch of arrogant white guys be associated with an NBA team? Pretty ####### racist.
