Shrine Game thread (1 Viewer)

Thanks Nerd, looking forward to the postseason games, then combine, then the best day of the year, the NFL Draft!

What's at Stake

NFL scouts will be the most interested spectators, taking notes on every move these college All-Stars make. Big-time programs such as USC, Oklahoma, LSU are represented side-by-side with smaller ones, like Norfolk State, Tennessee State and Richmond. For the players who never got to perform on national television this season, the game is a big opportuniy to make a dramatic impression on NFL teams heading into the combine on Feb. 20. And players who are better-known commodities can damage their stock with a bad performance, said former Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams, now a personnel executive with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who's been watching practices this week.

Key Matchup

Houston DE Phillip Hunt vs. the East offensive line. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Hunt recorded 14 sacks this season, second in the nation only to TCU's Jerry Hughes (15). Now, Hunt gets to show off in front of the pro scouts on his home field. The East's offensive front includes starting linemen from the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.

Players to watch

East:@ Missouri QB Chase Daniel. The former Missouri star ranked third in the Big 12 in passing yards (309.6 yards per game), behind Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell. The 6-foot Daniel needs to prove he can overcome his lack of height to be an effective NFL quarterback.

West:@ Rice WR Jarett Dillard. The NCAA's all-time leader in touchdown receptions (59) must convince scouts he can make the transition to the pros after setting numerous records in one of the nation's weakest conferences.

Watched the whole game. Some quick thoughts:

QB

It's kind of hard to get a great read on QBs in an All-Star game since they're rotating often and facing vanilla defenses. That said, I thought Stephen McGee looked like one of the best players on the field. He made good decisions, was accurate, showed good arm strength, and flashed some mobility. He seems like the perfect developmental QB to grap in the rounds 4-7 range. Give him a couple years on the bench and see if he pans out. The raw ability is promising.

Hoyer from Michigan State also made a few nice plays. He's another third QB candidate.

RB

No one looked GREAT, but lots of these guys looked pretty good.

Gartrell Johnson might not be a great athlete, but he looked pretty fluid and he's built strong. Sort of a Wali Lundy/Benjarvus Green-Ellis/Tim Hightower type. Could be a solid NFL backup. Keep an eye on his combine numbers.

Javarris Williams looked springy with a nice burst. He didn't make any "wow" type plays, but he looked solid. Good squatty build. Worth keeping an eye on.

Tyrell Sutton is another low slung runner with good skills. Runs hard and looked reasonably quick. It's kind of hard to see where he fits in at the NFL level because he's not really big enough to be workhorse and he doesn't have the blazing speed or lightning quicks of a typical change of pace back, but he could make a roster and surprise.

Marlon Lucky looked okay. He's sort of like a poor man's Ahman Green.

Ian Johnson looked overmatched. He's Justin Fargas without the elite tools.

Aaron Brown looked fast and smooth, but extremely thin (to the point where you almost might want to look at him as a WR prospect).

WR

Deon Butler made some nice plays. He's not a physical specimen and he doesn't have the raw burst of a Roscoe Parrish or DeSean Jackson, but he could be a Steve Breaston type at the next level.

Jarett Dillard scored on a long TD and made one or two nice grabs. He failed to come down with a few jump balls in the end zone.

Marko Mitchell looked pretty ordinary.

Aaron Kelly only had a couple opportunities and didn't capitalize on them.

No one else stood out.

TE

Not much to get excited about here.

Bear Pascoe made a great leaping catch over a defender on a 15-20 yard throw, but he looks like a below average athlete for an NFL TE.

No one else stood out. You can really see a big athleticism gap between the guys in this game and the Keller/Winslow/Witten types. None of these TEs flashed that first day type of mobility.

Perhaps he will continue to fly under the radar?
