761. Metallica - Fade to Black

Also considered: Nothing Else Matters
I have never been much of a metalhead and I ignored these guys and most of that genre for years.  I think I made a mistake.

I will always think of "Enter Sandman" when I think of these guys.  I loved Tom Arnold's short-lived sitcom, "The Jackie Thomas Show" and their theme song sounds directly lifted from "Enter Sandman."  I have no idea how they got away with it.

Side note:  The Jackie Thomas Show was very similar in concept to the Dabney Coleman sitcom, "Buffalo Bill" - egomaniacal, self-absorbed, small-time tv "star".  In both cases, people weren't drawn to these guys because weren't traditionally likable.  That was the joke - a damn good one too.

I meant in Dayton = or - is that just a succinct reply affirmin' yous Daytonian status?
lol - I meant I was here in this thread.  I haven't lived in the Dayton area for a number of years now, but my family and several good friends still do.  I get up there about once a year and still think of it fondly.  Just too damn cold though.

Heh - yeah, my questions can be kinda vague at times - like the rest of me stuff. ;)

Thnx.

I'm alone in a hotel room in Eastern Washington.  I'm putting all my eggs in the shuke thread excitement basket for the night.  Please don't let me down.

Currently out eating and drinking.  Family egg hunt tomorrow morning canceled so looks like it’ll be a late night for me.

Killin' Time... Does Hey Jude make your top ten pop anthems?
Hmmm, I'm not sure how to define "anthem."  I never thought of that as an anthem, but i guess it is.  If so, then yes.

Off the top of my head, I like Leonard Cohen's aptly titled "Anthem" in the category, and Reindeer Section's "Grand Parade" (doesn't sound anthem-y at first but then is).  Complete guilty pleasure is Ben Folds's "Evaporated."

Whatcha got?

I'd put more weight on the pop value. More along the lines of Don McClean.

ETA: Or Johnny Paycheck.

753. Steve Miller Band - Serenade

Have to admit, we wore out that greatest hits CD in high school.  Concerts were always fun, too.

But my favorite Steve Miller moment is when the band opened for Dead in '92.  I attended this show, and Steve and Norton Buffalo sat in for part of the second set.   It is pretty funny reading the comments.  Shows at Buckeye always seemed to be a little "weird", I'm not sure why, maybe it was the feeling of lawlessness because it was out in the middle of nowhere.  I have a pretty good story about another show I saw there, but you'll have to wait.  But I assure you it wasn't as weird as people describe in those comments.  I love how every post is prefaced with "I took acid before going into the show".

Honestly, I've seen Steve in concert bout 6-7 times - once right outside of Cinci, I believe - in an outdoor theater - grass sittin' & smokin'.

My favorie is probably not real popular, as it got me laughed at, but I'll take that chance again:

I "liked" this post ...I like Steve Miller.  No, I love Steve Miller.  I don't blame the guy for cashing in and this album was a part of that.

This is a non-apologetic, "he was better earlier" post.  Damn near everything on his "Anthology" album is better than anything else he did.

Fight me.

No ####?  I was at that show also.  Didn't they have some technical problems with Steve that night?  I remember my buddy tripping hard telling me how he could visually see the music drifting above the crowd during Drums/Space.   It was a damn good night.   :)

NOW we're speaking the same language.  Wolfmother is where it's at (well, one of the places it's at, anyway).

Also...what sort of weirdo doesn't like classic Stevie "Guitar" Miller (other than, like, Tanner, who hates everything)? Sure the "Abracadabra"  type years were dreck, and rhyming "taxes" with "facts is" was lame, but most of the 70's stuff?  C'mon.
