Shuke's 1400 favorite songs by 1400 different artists. (4 Viewers)

So many mixed feelings.  I want to give a like to some of these songs, but then I don't want to approve of their placement.  A bunch of great stuff (some of which I've never heard), but I'm surprised to see some of my favorite artists already listed.
Sorry our musical tastes aren’t exactly the same.

Again, I hope people don’t get too caught up about actual placement.  This is supposed to be a celebration of music.

I really need to listen to Townes. He comes with the respected weight of many recommendations by people I trust, like Tom Waits does. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get into either.

Good to see you back, shuke.
I’d expect Townes to be an easier sell than Waits.  While I’m a Waits fan, I can see how his growly, raspy voice wouldn’t be for everyone, and I think he’s grating in his persona, which all seems an act rather than genuine.

On the other hand, Townes is as genuine as it gets, and his songs are poetry.  I’d recommend listening to the Live at the Old Quarter record I previously mentioned, or hell if you have some time and want to get to know him (which might lead to a greater appreciation of his music), the documentary I recommended.

This is the biggest reason that I cannot tolerate Waits.  His entire gimmick feels contrived.  He's a great songwriter, but as a person/"performer" he has always come off as a clown shoe's clown shoe to me.

Not trying to criticize, just passing along my experience.

729. Big Star - September Gurls

Someone initially had this artist in their top 3 selections.  I won't name names, but she decided she had to change it.

Also considered: Thirteen
Ha!  I changed it from "The Ballad of El Goodo," which is no doubt one of my favorite songs, because I'd already mentioned that song in my write-up (which no one read) to "In My Life" in the Beatles thread.  Figured I'd break new ground instead, so subbed in my favorite song from my favorite voice.

Thirteen and September Gurls are fabulous choices, too.

ETA:  I was supposed to go to an Alex Chilton show in Memphis in 2010.  He died the day before the show.

wow ...brings back memories.  I was working in a country club pro shop and got along great with my boss, the pro.  He loved this song and he loved him some pot.

Got stoned several times over dinner at his house with him and his wife.  This album was always a part of what was played.  They even set me up with her sister for a couple of evenings.
