Shuke's 1400 favorite songs by 1400 different artists. (5 Viewers)

410. B.B. King - The Thrill Is Gone

Had the pleasure of seeing him live about 20 years ago.  It wasn't until then that I realized that he didn't (couldn't) sing and play guitar at the same time.  Makes for a very distinctive sound.
I saw him about the same time frame at NJPAC in Newark - actually sat one row in front of the City’s Mayor at the time Sharpe James.

BB was old at the time but still put on a great show. He told great stores in between songs as well. His best line was “I grew up Black in Mississippi, then I started playing the blues. That’s like being black, twice.”

Am I the only one who thought their lyrics to another song were "I wanna rock and rock all night, and part of every day"?  I mean, it made sense to me, because they were already rocking and rolling all night, so allocating only a part of the day to it seemed reasonable.  Everything in moderation, you know.
That is one of those songs that I cannot turn off fast enough.  Let's not even think about it.

I was a big kiss fan a few times off and on starting when I was about 10 years old.  I think I liked  and appreciated the hooks to their songs most.  The lyrics are awful at best for almost their entire catelogue.

Now - about this DJ'n - did you get to shtick it up at all?
Not really.

Pretty sure the teacher that ran the station listened the entire time, and we got in trouble a few times.

There was a rule that anything someone called in and requested had to be played. I can’t remember what the songs was, but we didn’t like it, so we dragged the needle across the record after 10 seconds followed by a toilet flushing sound effect.  This was hilarious to 16 year old me.

389. The New Basement Tapes - Kansas City

This is pretty cool:

The New Basement Tapes is a British-American musical supergroup made up of members Jim James, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens. The group is best known for Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, their 2014 album which consists of tracks based on newly uncovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the recording of his 1975 album with The Band, The Basement Tapes.
I would have much preferred James sing this one, though.

It's hilariouass to a 50 yo me!

Yeah - I firgure'd you was bent...
I worked for Oedekerk once upon a time, very briefly, but this isn't  "Shuke's Top 1,000 People Who've Worked For Steve Oedekerk" thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs would be a great album for my dad.
That WAS a "great" album for mine.  Gunfighter Ballads was in heavy, heavy rotation in The Mr. 5-ish household.  Marty Robbins, Jimmy Dean, etc, etc.

415. INXS - Don't Change

A handful of options for this pick, but this one brings a lot of nostalgia.
Great pick.  I'm a fan of the Swing, Shabooh and the songs from Listen Like Thieves that didn't get overplayed.  Don't Change and Shine Like it Does are their best tunes.

390. Don McLean- American Pie

Our high school had a student-ran radio station.  At the time I was there, 88-91, most of the collection we had to choose from was still vinyl. It was awesome.

When I DJ'ed, it was usually with a buddy or two.  But occasionally I was by myself.  I didn't know a lot of really long songs at the time.  But I knew this one.  And if I had to go to bathroom, this is what my audience was getting.
Iconic tune, but  Vincent is about as good as it gets.

can't see any of thise acts translating well to the arena/stadium milieu- were you in attendance? if so, what say you?
Depeche Mode played the Hollywood Bowl, of all places. Then cut a live album to commemorate it, which I promptly made fun of because my ex-girlfriend was making fun of The Stooges. #### off. Iggy rules. This was 1989 and I was listening to Raw Power, something many people did not do back then, so I can't say I blame her, but how much Ministry and Skinny Puppy does one budding lesbian thespian need?

can we allow for a  387c?

I own this bootleg shirt (the cover of Chairs Missing) and record. One of the greatest album covers ever, and I drafted it as the greatest album cover in the Best Cinematography category of the Oscar Music Draft that we had a few years back. Pink Flag is iconic and perfectly punk, but Chairs Missing might be the more nuanced and better album, all told.

In addition to their sound, Wire also had some great album covers

Did Thomas Dolby blind any of them with...

SCIENCE!

This song is so awesome...

978. Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science

One just for nostalgia's sake. I'm 46, so definitely grew up an MTV kid.  People like to say that kids back in the day spent all their time outside from dawn to dusk.  I remember playing outside a lot, in the woods, pick up baseball/basketball/football, riding our bikes, getting into trouble.  But I also remember plenty of time inside playing Atari, watching MTV, and looking at Playboys.
