I think MOCS nailed it - but rather than just one song - these guys represent album rock where you just put it on and listen to it as an entire album.

It's a shame that many people younger than 30 or so probably never really listened to albums all the way through - and certainly not as a regular practice.  There are so many deep cuts we all love here because you heard them as part of an album.  Think of the amount of times you hear a song and you automatically know what's coming next because of listening to the album as a whole for years.
Maybe start them out on album sides. Only about 20 minutes for them to deal with, that was me for the most part.

never heard this one growing up ... was a different world then, the hot stuff was not as easily geographically disseminated as it is in today's innerwebz reality - guessing it never got much, if any, play or traction up in the NYC area - Layne or Jamny may concur or refute? pretty sure you two were here during that era.

this was a much bigger regional (South/Midwest) hit, i would assume

don't even recall it being on any of those "HARD ROCK" K-Tel like compilations ... dig the song very much, but it's posing a logistical conundrum.

This definitely got airplay on Dayton rock radio in the 80’s.  Not sure about when it first came out.

Related offshoot:  I would stack 5-6 albums on the stereo arm - go read, do whatever - then flip the stack when that was done (found out when I went to college that is a big no-no for record treatment).  Anyone remember these bad boys?  I spent a month or so putting this together while on a steady diet of:

Cat Stevens - Catch Bull At Four

Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story

Doobie Brothers - Toulouse Street

James Taylor - Mud Slide Slim

The Who - Who's Next

The Beatles - White Album

Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything

If you ever did put one of these together, I hope you had an easier time than I did.  It's an electric working model and you end up have to sand/file a bunch of the parts to make it work right.  To this day, I don't know #### about car engines (though it wouldn't matter much anyway ...).

So sweet, Bink.

I got one of these as a gift once. I was too young to do it by myself, thus my pop helped.

One day - it disappeared - no one could find it - or - explain it to me.

Now - I think I know what happened....

Maybe if my pop had been a Todd-head, things coulda worked out better.

I'm kinda drunk and elevated.  What's going on?

I'm gonna get nostalgic about the past 24 hours in this thread and report back.

I admit to liking some Kiss songs but I Was Made For Loving You is one of the annoying Kiss tunes.
Am I the only one who thought their lyrics to another song were "I wanna rock and rock all night, and part of every day"?  I mean, it made sense to me, because they were already rocking and rolling all night, so allocating only a part of the day to it seemed reasonable.  Everything in moderation, you know.

Not sure how I missed this.

The album this is from, International Pop Overthrow, is in my all time Top 10.  Nothing but pure power pop goodness.  No pretense. No posing. Just 14 songs about love, heartbreak, and chicks...the cornerstones of all pop music.

It was recorded for a total cost of $5000.

It was a welcome break from the rather heavy and serious  tone of music in 1991 (Nirvana, Metallica,  NiN,  STP,  AiC etc).

Material Issue’s other 3 albums aren’t as solid. There are definitely some gems for sure. But IPO is one of those albums you can just put on and let it play. No dead spots.

Sadly, frontman Jim Ellison, committed suicide in 1996.

There is a pop/power pop fest named in honor of this album.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Pop_Overthrow

Valerie got more airplay but Diane was even better.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XjnNERIy0HI

I actually think the dumb (no offense) brother-in-law on whatever sitcom Jim Belushi was on back in the day...one of those shows where the slob husband has a smoking hot wife*...thought those were the lyrics too.

*pretty sure that’s how people see my marriage

“According to Jim”.  Wife was played by Courtney Thorne-Smith.

415. INXS - Don't Change

A handful of options for this pick, but this one brings a lot of nostalgia.
Shabooh Shoobah is their only really great album.  I will die on this hill.

In terms of nostalgia...I agree.

This tape (my tape) was playing the first time I “picked up” a girl (that I didn’t know beforehand) and then made out with.  It was in the back of my buddy mike’s Mustang 5.0.  There were 4 of us dudes. We met some girls and by the grace of the old gods and the new I “scored”.  So did my buddy Ron.

Mustang Mike and our other friend Marty did not.

A few days later I couldn’t find my tape. Mike claimed that I took it with me that night. Later on I found out that Mike and Marty, out of jealousy, threw my INXS tape out the car window.  Both can kiss my ### now.*

*Even though Mike has appeared on like MSNBC finance TV or whatever and Mike Rowe has done a video about him.

413. Loudon Wainwright III - Bill of Goods

I had this on a mixed tape I made from CDs I borrowed from the library.
Very interesting...

Your perfume petered out.
There was a whiff from your nicked armpit
When the real you wafted through
And your deodorant

Couldn't stop it.
There was a fire in your building.
They still don't know what caused it.
But all your clothes and shoes burned up,
Bob Dylan write this?

410. B.B. King - The Thrill Is Gone

Had the pleasure of seeing him live about 20 years ago.  It wasn't until then that I realized that he didn't (couldn't) sing and play guitar at the same time.  Makes for a very distinctive sound.
I am no expert on BB, but man - the dude was so excellent in so many ways. And, you are exactly correct.

It made him so distinctive - like Lucille was an alter ego rather than an instrument.

I love your pick...free - free - free now...all I can do is wish you well...
