Does anyone have a clue as to how these numbers are derived. I'm all about quantifying the unquantifiable, but c'mon. At least provide a rubric or something. How does one guy get a 2.94 and another guy get a 2.77 score?

Yet another reason why there is NO reason to get any kind of sporting news or analysis from a weekly or monthly magazine.

Outdated dinosaur of a medium.

I seen these before. While I'm not a fan of SI's rankings I do congratulate them for not copying everyone else.
You and I could pull random names out of a hat and we'd be doing something different. Without some qualitative reasoning behind these rankings/ratings, this is useless garbage, if you ask me.

IMO these rankings are awful. I am not going into specifics because I have a bunch of dynasty drafts coming up soon, but there isn't a whole lot I agree with there.

No franchise prospects out of the whole class?
No kidding, I thought AJ Green was supposed to be the next big thing since CJ and Fitz and he's still 3/4 of a point away from sniffing franchise territory... Guess they think all the teams drafting early this year are getting screwd.

Every year this is my exact point. :)

Point of reference, last year Clausen was graded 8.6 while CJ Spiller an 8.7. Fun to look at but not sure they affect my thinking at all.

I'm not sure what the exact complaint is here. Are you expecting some kind of formula based on physical measurable and college stats? Any such "explanation" of numbers like these would be laughable at best.In my mind, these are just rankings like any other. They just give the numbers to indicate "roughly" how much better they think a guy is than the guy just below him in the rankings, or how he compares to previous year's prospects etc. They are trying to give you a little more insight than a straight up positional ranking without the numbers would. Can such a thing really be done accurately? Highly unlikely IMO, but it's just evaluation/opinion regardless of the ranking/sorting system used.If the numbers bother you, just look at the rankings and be done with it. There's plenty to argue about even on that macro scale.

Holy Schneikes, I understand what you're saying and I might be one of the few exceptions here that dislike this.

But as someone that has spent the past six years grinding recordings of games for what amounts 60 hours a week for half the year and then scoring them for people to read, it bothers me.

In fact this stuff is why I started doing it. If you're just a casual reader and don't think much about things like this then that's ok. However, if you're trying to learn more about the game and who good prospects are this should bother you.

Here's why it bothers me:

When an evaluator scores a player they need to explain their ranking system. I want to know the frame of reference behind that ranking system. What they define as "accurate," "vision," "power," "balance," "pocket presence." Those things should be defined for you to see what standard they are grading these players to. It often shows who is really doing the work and is thinking deeply about doing it right. It also helps those doing the work learn more about the game and evaluation.

I also want to know how they arrive at this score. Do they value accuracy more than pocket presence or arm strength more than both? I want to know which skills they think are critical and which they think can be developed later.

Otherwise, the number is useless and that number is what they are using to base their ranking.

When you try to objectify a subjective thing such as human performance, you need to explain what goes on behind your numbers. Most of the explanations I see are so basic that it doesn't tell you much at all.
