Signed Up With Google's 'Project Fi' (1 Viewer)

So, are you guys liking this?

Anything to the rumor I heard that if you have a separate Google Voice account, you have to give it up?

Oh, crap. i thought you were talking about the Nexus 6p on project fi dropping in price. Went to look at it today and it's still the same price it was on Monday when I looked at it. Disappointed. :(

Got the 6p and signed up for Project Fi today. You do have to use or drop your google voice number, which I didn't use anymore anyway, so I was fine with that.

I got my Fi invite back in July but have been waiting for my current contract to end. Bought a new Motorola Nexus 6 64gb today and can't wait to ditch US Cellular. Wish Fi did family/shared plans though.

Have had a OnePlus One with Consumer Cellular for about a year, but I'm making the switch to a Nexus 6 with Project Fi next week, thanks to the $249 Nexus 6 that Amazon is selling.

I'll be able to trade in my OnePlus back to Amazon for ~150, and I should save $15-20 a month switching from CC to Fi, so after about 6 months, I'll see some savings.

Sprint/T-Mobile works fine where I am, but I'm constantly around Wi-Fi too.

Phones are very similar in value/quality, with some saying the Nexus edges out the OnePlus a bit AND I like the size of the phone.

The Nexus 6p is the worst phone I've ever had. Don't know if it's the phone, or Project Fi or Google in general. But it's one thing after another. Didn't keep date and time and had to have them send new phone. Now gmail hasn't been automatically syncing for weeks. And the latest is that I can't download new apps for update existing apps from Google Play store. Absolute piece of crap.

Have the exact opposite opinion. We have two of these and they are by far the greatest phones we have ever owned. and much love for Project Fi

okay, so who am I supposed to believe now?

I switched from Verizon to Fi about two months ago with a Nexus 6. Absolutely love the phone and it is a definite step up from a Galaxy S4, but there is definitely a big difference between Verizon and Fi. I haven't noticed much, if any, difference between the cell service, but the data absolutely sucks. I would say about 90% of the time that I'm not in wifi range I have LTE, but often I don't have data speeds that I would associate with even 3G and have a hard time opening webpages. Overall, its just been a minor annoyance as I am on wifi for all but probably 2 hours in a typical day, but it has been a bit disappointing. Service cost me $30.72 last month (partially because of the ####ty data, I suppose), so I'll take the mediocre service with the incredible price.

I think I'll be making the switch from US Cellular soon. Coming from a long line of Galaxy S series, I'm not sure I'd want something as big as the 6P but I'm worried about the 5X battery life. I'll probably go with the 6P but does anyone know if any B&M stores carry them? I'd just like to get my hands on one for a few minutes.

Get your hands on an iPhone 6s+ and you will have a good idea of the size. Here are the detailed specs of each: link

I've had Fi and the Nexus 6 for a couple days and I'm really happy with it so far. No problems with call quality and I'm loving the phone itself, especially the wireless charging. That is so clutch for me at work and I'm considering getting a base for home as well.

This service is absolutely terrible. Tons of dropped calls (while I'm sitting in my house). Takes a long time after ending one call before it finds a new signal so you can make/receive another one.

Don't know if it's the phone or the service. Bought a brand-new nexus 6 for this, and now it's looking like a waste of money. Going to have to try different service. Maybe I can sell my nexus 6, go back to my nexus 5 (which doesn't work on Project Fi) and just get a different carrier. Was on Solavei in the past and had no issues, until they went out of business.

Are you making wifi calls from the house? I am on it along with my wife, FIL and we have zero issues.

I'm on Wi-Fi in the house, but I don't think it's making Wi-Fi calls usually. Because I've normally noticed when it does that. I think it only does that when there's no cel signal.

And while there are some dropped calls, the thing that happens the most is that partway into the conversation, I can still hear the person talking to me, but somehow they can no longer hear me. Happens all the time. And, no, I didn't accidentally hit the mute button. Google of course has no explanation, and this is my second phone, and the same thing happens.

contact Project Fi customer service, (not google) via their chat. They are absolutely fantastic. If you have it set up correctly it should always use WiFi to make your calls if it is available. My guess is you have some sort of conflict going on.

I've had next to no issues with my Nexus 6 and Project Fi since I got it. Every now and then, a wifi call will be a little wonky, but it's infrequent enough to not be an issue for me.

I'm just lucky I guess. And customer support has been a dream so far. I called and they said they can't help me over the phone since I'm using my only phone to talk to them. I understand that. So she said she'd email me all the steps right away and I could try myself to see if any of those solve the problem. I've been waiting an hour, and still no email.

Don't bother calling. Go here: Project Fi Customer Support and use the chat option. (dont use your phone)

2-3 minutes and they will walk you through everything.

All their "tips" for fixing the issue are all the things they suggest for every issue, and I've tried them all already. None of them work.

Oh, and it's also been awesome that I've now been disconnected due to a dropped call three times so far and counting while talking to customer support about the fact that my phone drops calls.

You refuse to be helped. Good luck!

Not a fan of Cricket.  Mostly because they advertise nationwide LTE but they cap data speeds at HSPA+ speeds (8 MBps).  Its dishonest imo

So i am currently with Ting (sprint resale provider).  I actually have been getting killed by the amount of talk time i am using (work BB is broken).  I am due for a new phone and can't imagine the service would be any worse with the addition of t-mobile and wifi calling option.  Am i missing anything here?  I posted a mediocre review of the nexus but quickly learned the grass is not always greener on the other side (currently have the HTC One which is terrible).  I would probably go with the 5x due to price and size.

Definitely looking into this as soon as I am looking for a new phone, maybe sooner. Been wanting to switch back to a Google stock OS, and based on my usage, this should drop my $$ by $20-$30 per phone. Any hidden charges to be aware of?

No hidden charges but you need to watch your cellular data use. It's very easy to adjust limits and I usually have cell data turned off unless there's no wifi around. I get a lot of attachments at work so I had to 'Restrict app background data' for "Exchange Services" so I wouldn't get charged for those.

I googled around about coverage in Tampa, and it doesn't sound like it is great.  I guess you get what you pay for.  AT&T & Verizon usually have the best coverage, so they are the most expensive.

I was in Tampa a month ago and my phone worked fine.

I feel like Sprint is cheaper than this.
How so?

My bill last month including taxes was $27 since I only used ~400 MB of cellular data. Just checked and in 9 months my bill hasn't been higher than $35.

The other thing is that the wifi calling is seamless - the phone will use whichever signal is stronger (cell or wifi).

How much did you pay for the phone?

I pay $50 for unlimited everything and $20 for unlimited iPhone. I burn like 3-4 gigabytes of data a month.

I've been watching my usage, and I barely ever crack 1GB. I have wifi in work/home and most places I go except if I'm traveling.

I'm a new Fi subscriber via the Nexus 5x promotion and everything is great so far. I'd like some feedback anyone may have on the $5 per month device protection. Is there any conventional wisdom on whether this is considered a good idea? Years ago, I had phone insurance, lost my phone, tried to make a claim only to learn that the deductible was way more than my phone was worth. We have young kids, are both very busy and active, so there is some risk. We both have rubber/plastic cases - through the google shop.

So I am on my second month with FI.  Overall the quality of the phone/data service is outstanding.  I live in So Cal and work in No Cal, coverage is fantastic in both.  I am not sure which networks I am hitting in SF but the speed is ridiculous on the LTE.  The Nexus 5x is just an okay phone but for 200 it is more than adequate.  First bell was $30 ish.  Second bill was $28.  So long as the keep the price reasonable I don't see myself ever moving.

Wisconsin area right? I'm curious how the service holds up outside the Milwaukee/Madison/GB areas.

Second or third month here and I couldn't be happier myself. The Nexus 6 is really a whopper of a good phone and the service has been great.

I'm interested in that as well, and will be keeping a close eye as we make various trips into the north woods this summer and fall.  We've only been with google a few days, but so far I've had no problems just running around the Milwaukee metro area. The good news is that we get the benefit of the 5x deal ($200 phone) just by signing up, and can cancel and return to US Cellular at any time. US Cell was excellent, and only slightly more expensive than Fi, so we'll cancel and go back if we notice any drop-off in coverage..
