So I am on my second month with FI.  Overall the quality of the phone/data service is outstanding.  I live in So Cal and work in No Cal, coverage is fantastic in both.  I am not sure which networks I am hitting in SF but the speed is ridiculous on the LTE.  The Nexus 5x is just an okay phone but for 200 it is more than adequate.  First bell was $30 ish.  Second bill was $28.  So long as the keep the price reasonable I don't see myself ever moving.
Did you get the Google device protection?

Na, I figure for a $200 phone it is not worth it.  I have had similar issue as you where the deductible plus getting a chitty refurbished phone just did not make it worth it.  Used phones are so cheap these days I would go that route rather than insurance.

Wife had a problem with the camera on hers so I went on the Motorola website (for the Nexus 6) and it had over a year on the warranty.  They have a program where you pay $25 and they send you the replacement phone first, with overnight shipping, and you return your old phone.  They sent her the 64GB since they didn't have any 32GB left.

Second week on this for me. Switched from t-mobile's 30 dollar unlimited data plan.  I haven't traveled out of the city yet, so it is likely just on t-mobile network anyway, but for 200 bucks u like the phone.

Does anyone live in a city with Google Fiber?  Are they putting up wifi hotspots?  The reason I ask is because Google Fiber is coming into the Tampa Bay Area at the same time Verizon is leaving.  I would assume Verizon is more interested in offering people high speed internet via smart phones.  Maybe they saw what happened with traditional land lines, and are predicting the same thing will happen with the internet.  If that is the case, then why would Google be investing in infrastructure?  Maybe they are thinking bigger than just home internet subscriptions.  Maybe it is a play to make Google Fi better.

I think we're still a ways away from all cellular data. Hard wired networks are here for the foreseeable future IMO. Especially when factoring in businesses, and with so many cord-cutters now streaming their TV/Movies/etc. No way any mobile plans are affordable on that amount of data.

I tend to agree, however Verizon is already testing 5g.  They control the price per gig, so if they were able to cut that in half it could be comparable to in home prices.  I coukd see them maybe negotiating a deal with streaming services to not hit your data allowance.  For example, Netflix doesn't hit your data.

I have FiOS internet and it is about $70 a mo.  I also have a Verizon cell plan at about $120 a mo.  How much cellular data could I get for almost $200?

Is there any reason not to start transitioning my family to this?  We're with ATT and paying $237/month for 3 smartphones and 1 "regular" phone, sharing 15 GB of data. We each only use about 3 GB per month.  That cost is only going to continue to increase as my two younger kids go to smartphones in the next 2-3 years.

Depends on whether t-moblie and sprint work for you. 80 bucks for 4 phones + 90 bucks for 9 gigs is cheaper than 237 for sure

Yeah, check your data coverage.

P.S. HULK will kick me for this, but Cricket uses AT&T signals and has a plan with multiple line and auto pay discounts that may work work for you and be in the general $100 range.

I have zero compliants...it is weird when i am on a plane and able to accept phone calls over the WIFI :ninja:  .   Data is expensive, but if you make sure you are on wifi when available then you are golden.  Coverage is great in CA and every place i have traveled.

Using Google Fi service here in Tanzania and it works well.  Sometimes my phone (Nexus 6) has trouble finding the cell towers where I'm at (in-laws get service here) but when I'm out it works.  We have 'high' speed wifi (not common yet) so it hasn't been a problem.  Very nice not to have to worry about a different sim card in every country.  Also data at $10 per GB is expensive in the U.S. but it's cheap here and convenient for using Google maps.

You guys watch the other Android forums/blogs more than I do but I saw this today. Any other rumors about the next phones? Finally going to be off contract in a few weeks but might stick it out if it's worth waiting for a newer model.

Ray - Verizon coverage is far better for us around here.  We are off contract and own our phones.  We have 4 smartphones and 10GB for $160/mo. including taxes.

PM me if you want more information.

My Verizon contract is up soon, and I may consider Fi.  HTC makes nice devices.

AT&T has a $45 dollar plan ($40 w/auto refill). Unlimited Talk & text, 3GB of data.

Switched to Cricket a couple months ago. Kept my Nexus 6. Haven't had a single issue.
Yeah, if you are cool with the data caps, Cricket is a nice alternative.... especially if you take advantage of the Auto-pay and refer-a-friend discounts.  I get $25 off my wife's bill every other month or so.

Wisconsin area right? I'm curious how the service holds up outside the Milwaukee/Madison/GB areas.
We haven't been into the far north sticks yet, but the addition of the US Cellular network has really made this worthwhile in WI imo. I'm consistently under $30/mo., coverage is great. The only issue I had was a month or so ago near Wausau/St. Point, but I think that was before USC became available. Using FiSwitch app, it seems I am on USCellular most of the time these days.

Let me know if you signed up and what your experience has been.

Once they get the group plan down and the US Cellular addition gets some more testing I'd go back.
