Silicon Valley - New Mike Judge 8-Part HBO Series (1 Viewer)

Loved Belsen threatening Richard with possibly getting 40+ years, and Ron lowkey gives him the "higher" point. :lmao:
That attorney, not to be confused with lawyer is an under rated superstar. His scenes are great
That one episode where he and Richard were talking; they were zoom in on Richard for about a 5 second monologue, then he looks up and LaFlamme is already all the way across the room playing the guitar almost killed me. He tuned Richard out INSTANTLY. :lmao:

The scene where the lawyer is giving his "criminal resume" and starts talking about doing time for being with underage girls...and Erlich looking like..."wow...thats' hot".

:D

This weeks episode had a lot of very good subtle humor.

“He’s the most cheerful person I’ve ever heard quote Hitler” :lmao:
Also, "arbeit macht frei" loosely translates to "work will set you free" and was a slogan placed over the entrances to Nazi concentration camps in WWII.
False
Which part?Because when I went to Auschwitz, that was exactly what was above the entrance
I meant that whole holocaust thing.

Hurriedly grabbing the notepad while Richard goes "um uh" and then just writing "NO." :lmao:

The Erlich thing on the stand was completely unnecessary, they didn't need to add that. With that being said, I still love the show and don't care about plot flaws like that too much with a comedy like this.

Wonder how they wrap this season up.

My ranking of characters:

  1. Jared
  2. Gilfoyle
  3. Erlich
  4. Dinesh
  5. Richard
  6. Gavin
  7. Jian-Yang
  8. Bighead
I love them all though.

I am not smart enough to know what is lazy writing vs good writing
Neither are the people saying it.
I don't think that's it. But possibly they (like most people) never spent a lot of time writing comedy. As someone who spent a number of years writing comedy for stage, local screen, and newspapers (very local/low level, this is not a 'look at me' post) I think I empathize with writers and understand why they do what they do a lot of times better than most people. I'm also less demanding and more easily able to suspend disbelief. You can put almost anything under a microscope and pick it to pieces, for me the bottom line is : is it funny? That's basically it.
I was being flippant and a little mean.

I agree with Floppo's tastes in a lot of things and I know he isn't dumb. And I am sure a lot of the other people criticizing the "lazy writing" aren't dumb either. But the bottom line for me is the same as yours: does it work as comedy?

Kramer plugging a whale's hole with a golf ball and then George Constanza removing it wasn't the least bit realistic either, but it worked.

I realize Silicon Valley isn't just comedy, it is also satire, which Seinfeld generally wasn't. And satire has to have elements of realism in order to be effective, but it doesn't have to (and probably can't) be totally realistic.
'

Slightly off topic, but Jason Alexander was on Stern last week and was talking about that episode. George's story line in that episode was originally scripted to end with George walking out into the waves. Larry David made a snap decision on the day they were shooting the episode to have the golf ball be the impediment to the whale's breathing and wrote George's "The sea was angry that day my friends..." speech on the spot. Conceived, written, memorized, and delivered in one take. Changed the entire episode in the span of roughly an hour. That is AMAZING.
One of my favorite lines delivered by anybody in that whole series and probably one of the top 2-3 lines George ever had, IMO.
Agreed. I couldn't believe it was written on the fly, Jason Alexander had roughly 5 minutes to learn it, and they shot one take. You can see Michael Richards balking a little bit when he drops the "Is that a Titleist?" line too - which makes sense now because the audience reaction was so powerful, it probably surprised the cast.
Here is the interview where he talks about that. It starts about 7:55, but there is background information before that.

Also, Gilfoyle and Denish keep climbing these rankings for me, such a great tandem!

The scene where Blaine is standing in front of the board with the "Let Blaine Die" decision chart was one of my favorites from the season.

Wow. Hard to envision any ranking without Erlich as numero uno. No love for Bighead is a surprise as well.

I love them all, small gap between first and last for me. That scene where Jian-Yang pitched his pedophile app and then smoked in the office afterwards gave him my bump ahead of Bighead.

I think the Bighead character doesn't have a long shelf life, but when he is brought in sporadically, he's gold.

I'd go:

1. Erlich

2. Gilfoyle (love his wickedly dry humor)

3. Jared

4. Dinesh

5. Bighead

6. Gavin

7. Richard (his character was refreshing in its nerdiness in the first half of season one but started dragging subsequently)

8. Chin-Yank (not enough input)

I like Dinesh more than most.
looks about right.

admittedly it seems to be easier to do gilfoyle's brand of humor, but I just love the way he crushes the lines.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to act like Jared and Richard do. To make awkwardness look that genuine... wow.

One thing about actors, in most cases, they're not acting. Hollywood finds people who fit that persona, then use them in those spots.

Interview with Jared (Zach Woods). Based on the attached, it seems he doesn't really need to act much.

Also love the Russ speech after Richard rips him and he points to Gilfoyle and Dinesh:

"And this guy" points at Gilfoyle "Bin Laden" points at Dinesh :lmao:

Am I just supposed to believe a company like Google would just promote a guy to lead a project and allow him to pretty much do nothing? No one even checks in on this guy until it's too late? That's lazy writing.

Just watched this so to jump in with the other complainers...

I'm surprised these writers couldn't have put together an awesome scene where the Hooli lawyers, during their own prep, couldn't comprehend how Richard would have a girlfriend, and then put him on the stand and undressed him in a way to admit that no girlfriend existed. The focus would have been more on comedy than plot, and it wouldn't have required that stupid outburst on the stand.

Did you see Martin Starr as Bill in Freaks and Geeks? Really could not be more different from Gilfoyle (although Gilfoyle is somewhat similar to Starr's character in Party Down).

I'm playing poker right now and there is a guy at my table that has to be "Big Head".

Seriously it might be him. I'm on the verge of asking him how is it working at Hooli.

I just realized today that one of the decorators in the office- nice guy, really and almost painfully polite in a self-deprecating way... reminds me a ton of Jared. even the sound and intonation of his voice. it is going to be really tough to work with him from now on... .wish I hadn't made the connection.

Just finally watched S1E2 to give this a shot yesterday when I get out of work. Just a taste to see what the fuss was about.

The GF and I finally made it to bed at 1am. I think we are on S2E3. JFC this is a great show. She's got zero tech knowledge and loves it. I'm a tech crunch junkie who follows disrupt and love it.

Fantastic cast (recognize many of them from assorted roles).

I was almost in tears laughing at the "**** jerking optimization discussion" at TC Disrupt at the end of S1  Hardest I have laughed at a TV show in a long time...
