Silk Road - What the hell is this (1 Viewer)

I'm grateful for Silk Road. During my partying days circa 2013, I was advised of this site to acquire pure versions of certain substances. I never pulled the trigger but I did purchase 4 Bitcoins if I decided to buy anything there. I kind of forgot about the coins but remembered many years later. Bought each BTC for $25. So much for due diligence and asset allocation. This was the best investment I've ever made :coffee:

You sell them yet?

I took profits on one. Will hold the rest and reevaluate in the next 3-4 years.

Funny enough that's why I never bought any. I figured BTC was just a way to do illicit things and had no use for them. If I only knew...

Anyway, looking at the news I'm kind of agog at the support Ullrich has. I mean, why? He was a wholesaler of illicit/deadly drugs that surely killed many and was personally involved in five murder-for-hire plots. This is one of those folks that you forget about the key. I just don't get it.

He's had a huge following since he was put in jail. Folks that stand behind him say he just built the platform, he didn't pull the trigger on the murder for hires, he didn't peddle the drugs, he just made a % off the transactions. It was capitalism at its finest.

I'm with you, I don't buy it. He was fully aware of what was going on and never once thought about pulling the plug on it.

Kind of a miracle that you remembered how to access your bitcoins. Most of the people I know who bought really early either sold WAY too early or forgot how to access them (and probably would have sold way too early if they remembered how).

That's still true. Its just they now happen to also be a speculative investment ... for some reason.

This argument always makes me laugh. Guess what the number one currency for illicit activities is.....dollars!

You can't really wash BTC. All those mixers and anonymizers I think are mostly on the ETH chain.

That's a different argument. Yes dollars are used for illegal activities. They are also used for many, many legitimate purchases. Bitcoin isn't. Nothing is sold in bitcoins. At least nothing I know of.

I can buy ETH in BTC, SOL in BTC, XRP in BTC.

Yes, I'm being pedantic. I'm on the most boring conference call in the world.

Absolutely. I had to rummage through my storage unit to find the old laptop where all the info was stored. Thankfully it still worked.

There are some interesting :tinfoilhat: conspiracies out there as to why this guy received a pardon. Most of them having to do with secret stashes of crypto now worth billions.

I know almost nothing about crypto - assuming it's true and he has billions in crypto he's about to transfer to pay bribes, would that dilute the market and cause the value of the crypto to come down?

I don't profess to be an expert (there are some on these boards that may chime in.) But the market cap for crypto is in the trillion's I believe, even if he as some billions lying around it will take a while to cash out. And if there is any truth to rumors about bribes or campaign contributions, those receiving them would probably sit on them for a while to not arise suspicion I would guess.

I added some IBIT today. New paradigm and I don't get it entirely, but new sheriff seems to be a bellow blowing on the embers for more.
