Just a simple poll to see if I'm an oddball or not...

Rocky vs Thunderlips and Mr. T... Mickey dies...

Rocky vs Ivan Drago... Apollo dies...

The soundtrack alone makes me pick Rocky IV... Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Rocky III, but never considered it nearly as good as Rocky IV..

Am I crazy??

Can't see how this will be remotely close.

I'd venture to guess twice the votes or more will land on Rocky III.

III is better by a wide distance. It has Thunderlips, Clubber Lang and Rocky and Apollo man-hugging in the ocean. ;)

IV has the robot. 'Nuff said.

Rocky IV was better until the Russian home crowd suddenly starts cheering for the American.

I find it amusing that even after 30 years, we still don't have AI robots like the ones Hollywood thought existed.

Mr T played the quintessential bad guy. For some reason (maybe because it was the fourth go around), the whole training in Russia seemed flat and boring. That killed what I considered the superior premise of IV (vs. III) in the steroid-laced Drago.

III over IV to me.

Hey now, give Rocky credit: despite training in the snow and cold of Russia, he still managed to show up to the fight with an awesome tan. :lmao:

So far, you're spot on....

All these years I've thought that everybody besides the occasional oddball liked Rocky IV better than III... I guess I was the oddball...

It's kind of like going into a poker tournament thinking you're playing with a bunch of fish... only to find out, you're the fish... :kicksrock:

The difference isn't that huge playin4beer. I loved all of the Rockys with the exception of 5, which has grown on me a bit over the years. Still the worst of the franchise by a million miles.

The brilliance of Mister T and the slow-mo love scene in III gives it the edge over the genius of the "I can change" speech in IV.

Agreed. 5 is, well, I know want to say it's horrible, but it's not very good either. It does have one of the best lines of any Rocky flick though:

"Yo, you knock him down, why don't you try knocking me down now." The way a suddenly-angry Rocky says that after slowly rising from tending to a downed Paulie is just awesome.

It gets better

The "Eye of The Tiger" montage that opens Rocky III is perfect: Shots of Rocky defending his title against hand-picked opponents, money rolling in, living large, getting soft...vs. Clubber Lang busting his butt to get in shape, destroying his opponents as he climbs the ranks, Mickey taking in one of his fights and crapping himself at the thought of Rocky taking on this guy. Just really set up the movie perfectly.

Rocky 3 over Rocky 4 because....

  • Clubber > Drago
  • Brigitte Nielsen's horrific Russian accent - "He is like your Popeye. He eats his speenach."
  • Apollo gets murdered in an exhibition
  • Oh.....and the fact that Rocky travels to Russia for an unsanctioned fight for no money on Christmas Day.

I love Rocky so much that my ATM PIN is the order of Rocky movies 1-4 best to worst. I refuse to acknowledge Rocky 5

I also named my dog Rocky Balboa :bag:

I enjoy both...but that montage is excellent.

The training in IV is better and you don't get the beach running uncomfortable Ocean hug.

Both have the typical Adrian speech to get Rocky pumped. You just have to decide if you like "You can't win" vs. "What's the truth damn it?!"

  • And Paulie is worried about the Rose Bowl game...pretty sure they can get back to the US before that with the fight being on Christmas.

Three is all about, "There is no tomorrow!"

4 is great. Classic Rocky where he battles in an epic bout of two behemoths. Awesome.

3 is awesome in a different way. Mr. T was such a good bad guy. You hated him so much. It was so incredibly satisfying to see him go back in there and just whoop Clubber Lang in just a couple rounds. He owned Clubber in the second fight. "My mother hits harder than that!" I think if that fight would have gone the typical 38 rounds his other fights went, it wouldn't have been so good.

I voted 4, but it was tough to choose for me.

I actually like the training in III better than IV. Apollo was training Rocky to fight in a completely different manner than he ever had before, to become a better boxer rather than a slugger whose main reason for success was an iron jaw. In IV, it was more of a switcheroo of the stereotypical USA vs. Russia views: Rocky was the one with the beard, training in Siberian winter conditions, chopping wood and living the sparse life while Drago had all of the high tech advances. To beat the Soviet, Rocky had to become more Russian than him...meh.

Adrian's speech in III was MUCH better: Just be honest with yourself. If you don't want to do this, then don't bother, but stop yanking everyone and yourself around. If you want to do it, then get to it.

Her "You can't win!" speech in IV was the ultimate wet blanket speech, even if she meant it to protect him. Rocky was in a funk until she showed up in Russia with a change of heart. Thanks, Adrian.

Been years and years since I've watched either. The only one I know real well is the original. But I remember liking Rocky III more than IV back in the day.

Rocky 4 was also kind of time sensitive.

Back when it was made, Russians were our ACTUAL enemies.
I think we need a final ruling from Em's group... What do they think over there?
The forum went away. I'm not sure what's happening with that site.
:hot: They were supposed to be bigger than Google :kicksrock:

I bet the relaunch will be huge on the level only the biggest Silicon Valley bigshots dream about.

I stand by my early prediction. Just remember, Obamacare had some early bumps. And now that site has seen over a billion people.

I'm wondering if this might be age-specific. I'm 30 and I don't think I know a single person near my age who would prefer III to IV.
