When I lived in St. Louis for 6 years I went to like 1 regular season NFL game, but about 40 MLB games.

With the departure of the Chargers, San Diego is now a single sport city.  The Padres are now the only game in town which I believe makes San Diego the only city with a MLB franchise but no other big four sports team.

If you're a mid-sized American city and can only have one professional sports team, do you want to be like San Diego, Jacksonville (football), Portland/Oklahoma City (hoops), or whatever city only has a NHL franchise?

No specific selection criteria.
Portland has MLS in addition to NBA, but I consider MLS to be minor league soccer, even though I enjoy going to the games from time to time.  I grew up in Dallas, which has every sport. The only one I really miss not having is baseball.  I loved going to Ranger games, even when they played in crappy Arlington Stadium.  Seats were cheap and the warm weather provided great scenery from the female fans.  Short shorts and halter tops of the best looking women in the country.

NBA games are fun.  College football here is a better experience than NFL.  I will never attend another NFL game again in my life, but enjoy it on TV.  Would like an NHL team here too.

Check out a Winterhawks game if you haven't. Great, cheap entertainment.

I'd rather go to a football game but you have maximum opportunity to get out and go to a game with baseball, better weather too.  81 vs 41 or 8 or whatever soccer is.
The first part of this answer is why I chose basketball over football.  Prefer football but about 42 home games in an NBA season vs 8 in the NFL(or less if one is a "home international game").  Baseball doesn't do it for me, even though there are more games.

I'd totally have season tickets to those games if I lived in Portland. Can sit on the glass for practically free, and they are a strong team year after year.

Yep and very family friendly based on my experience. Been to 5 different home rinks in the WHL and OHL. All loaded with kids having a great time.

Baseball.  Living in Omaha, the closest thing we have to a professional team is the AAA affiliate of the Royals, but the quality of product is good and season tickets are relatively inexpensive (they get you on concessions though).  So if I could pick one top shelf sport ot come to Omaha it would be a MLB team.  Tickets would be a little more expensive, but the experience of the season would be well worth it from a fans perspective.  As it is now have to travel 3 hours to watch the Royals, 6 hours to watch the Cardinals or 8-10 hours to watch the Cubs or Rockies.  Just not worth the drive or flight on a regular basis.  Whereas if I want to catch a football game the drive to KC doesn't seem as bad as I am essentially watching 1/8 of their home schedule every time I make the drive.
