Skydiving attempt - (1 Viewer)

Couldn't get the feed to load (finally did on YouTube but it was already to the landing.) Anywhere to watch the instant replay yet?

After such great views inside the capsule and of him climbing out and standing on the edge just before the jump....the jump itself was dull/anti-climatic. Could really have used a helmet cam.

Speed of sound is 768mph and Mach 1 is 761mph. I believe he only got up to 729mph.
That was an estimate--they won't know his actual speed until they download the data from his suit.Also. I believe the speed of sound changes with altitude.

this was badass

watching him open the door, slide out, stand up and then just walk off like he was going down his front steps to get the groceries

Top speed of 833mph or mach 1.24.

Record height of 128,097 feet, over 24 miles.

Total freefall time of 4 minutes, 19 seconds.

It's official. Felix Baumgartner has broken the previous free fall record set by Obama.

so there were no helmet cams or anything?
He has cameras on his chest pack but the footage is not posted online yet. He was in trouble when he got into the death spin but fought hard to regained control.
That was the point it went from "anyone could do this" to "Whoa!".
If anyone thinks they could do what he did they are delusional. Not sure if there are many that thought "anyone could do this".

Havent read this entire thread yet, so maybe posted already:

 Kittinger used a small "drogue" parachute to get out of the flat spin when he set his old record. Felix had one too just as a precaution but if he used it, he would not reach supersonic speed.

i believe they said there were 27 total cameras on the capsule and his suit. Willing to bet the POV video will be showing up soon as a Red Bull commercial. Which is why all the live feed had was the infrared remote view. Though it was still  when he was in that flat spin at mach 1+

It's amazing how he got out of the flat spin. Maybe he should be tested for Red Bull. :lmao:

There have been a few "meh" replies. I think some people thought "If I had enough money, I could fall out of a capsule". Kind of like getting to the top of Everest is becoming more about money.See him come out of the spin was the reason that no, not anyone could do it. JMO.

Anyone that thinks money can make them do what he did or even climb Everest is a mental midget!

Thanks, this was pretty interesting to watch on the heels of viewing today's mission. It was striking how similar they were in concept.

mission control did not seem at all concerned when he was going head over heels like that. i thought he was a dead man. how the #### does one not pass out there?did this get talked about in the post-landing presser?

I read that he pulled the chute early because the heating element in his visor failed and it was fogging up. I'm not sure hy he didn't wait for mission control to give him the count down.

Best part was the steps it took to get him out of that thing. There were around 40. My favorite being disconnecting the oxygen. That took the longest. Mission control was being so persuasive and calm...but it definitely gave him pause.

The salute was pretty cool too.

Amazing.

Next time, he needs to wear one of those "flying suits" that base jumpers wear, and see how far east he can fly after he jumps.
