I had Smith on my "sleeper" list also, BUT last week Rotoworld quoted an article that said the Texans were trying/experimenting with Barwin @ DE on passing downs & moving Smith inside on those plays....Anybody think there is a good chance of that happening?Obviously that would limit Smiths' sack totals some.

I've got Chauncey Davis, ATL, on my deep sleeper list.
He's currently depth charted behind Jamal Anderson, but I've heard ATL is moving Anderson inside.
Davis was one of the top 15 idp scoring DEs the last half of last year.
Playing opposite Abraham should keep single block coverage on Davis.
I also look for Ray Edwards, MIN to finally contribute in the idp scoring column.

When Barwin takes the field for the Texans’ June 15-17 minicamp, Kollar plans to throw him right in with the team. He said he expects to line Barwin up at end opposite Mario Williams on passing downs, which will allow Antonio Smith to slide inside to defensive tackle, and as the backup to Williams at right end in base packages.

Maybe Burgess is going to be moved this offseason? maybe Burgess and Ellis start, and Scott is a situational pass rush guy? I think Ellis and Burgess are 3 down guys. I'm a little surprised that Ellis hasn't been pimped more by the FBG crew. he is a force coming off the edge, and he is a solid character guy who should become the leader of that defense, and in the locker room right away. I know I have him stashed on the bench, and I am hoping his LB designation changes to the DL when MFL makes their next run of changes. I'm pretty sure I read a few articles about Ellis moving to DE and being a full time starter. Jene do you have any opinion on Ellis?

I like Ellis, but he's been a part-time player for a couple of seasons now and he'll be 34 by the time the season begins. He's probably a better risk in big play leagues, and only worth consideration as a DL3 in other setups if he earns a definite full time role.

Grant and Smith are already getting the 4-game time out for the StarCaps use. McCray will start in Grant's place. Grant has looked out of shape in the OTA's, so I don't think it's a given that he will start if he's still out of shape when the season starts. Talk had been how McCray would be used in obvious passing downs because he's a better pass rusher than Grant. Grant could be shifted to DT, along side Ellis, on those downs.
You don't get opportunities like this handed to you often. McCray could make some hay here...

It may not limit Smith's totals. This situation would be a lot like Justin Tuck's early in his career or Justin Smith's last year. Antonio Smith might be a very capable three-technique pass rusher. One-on-one matchups with a guard with a edge rushing end next to him may be just as good (or better) than taking all his third down snaps against a tackle one-on-one.He's a guy to consider as a DE3-4. Certainly he should be ripped off the waiver wire if he gets off to a hot start.
Anderson has been moved inside in past seasons, too. Davis isn't a great all-around player and both Kroy Biermann and now Lawrence Sidbury are in the mix for snaps, too. Worth watching, though.
My next set of rankings will be favorable to Ayers.
McCray got this opportunity in Jacksonville in 2007 and the second half and was very inconsistent as an every-down player in both instances. He's always been most productive in a part-time role. Still, he's a great upside play if you can get him as a very late DE3 behind two solid options or DE4.

That seems to be what many Raiders homers believe will happen. I think they'd be best to have all three and use them in a rotation until one gets hurt, but we all know how well conventional wisdom and the Raiders mix.

+1 Ellis being a DE again. He will outproduce his draft slot for sure. Oakland lacks quality depth too, I could see Ellis getting a lot of snaps.
Daryll Tapp is another DE that outproduces his draft slot. Two years straight that he's had 40+ solos and he didn't even start all games last year. The presence of Lawrence Jackson stealing passing downs if not the LE spot keeps Tapp on the board late.
Everette Brown is a rookie I've been trying to snag in all my dynasty drafts. Tyler Brayton is a filler and I don't see why Charles Johnson couldn't take that job last year. The fact that Carolina gave up 2010 1st for Brown tells me they think highly of him. Sure he won't start, he's extremely light and a weakness against the run. But in a pass rushing role, I could see him getting 10 sacks if you're looking for the big play.

Victor Abiamiri is in danger of becoming the perennial failed-expectations guy, but he worth the low cost for one more season. Someone always surprises in that Eagle rotation, this year s/b his turn.
I like getting both Charles Johnson and Everette Brown in Carolina. Johnson is an afterthought despite six sacks in limited duty last year. He turned a corner. You can get Brown reasonably in a rookie draft and Johnson off the waiver wire in some leagues. New DC Ron Meeks likes to get pressure and has his ends pin their ears back. Also, this should spell the end of a starting job for Brayton and whatever pictures he had on Trgovac.
I'll pass on Jamal Anderson in ATL, he can't get to the QB from the edge. Maybe he does something if he moves inside, but he's a bust right now. I like Sidbury there, a lot. In addition to seeing time as a pass rush specialist, Abraham is due to miss half the season.
I categorically agree with the ponts by saintfool on Bobby McCray. He is a low risk/high reward type and he quietly has at least a four-week run as a starter.
Michael Johnson in Cinci has been going higher than I expected in rookie drafts, so he probably doesn't qualify since everyone see the failures Odom and Geathers have been as pass rushers and are banking on Johnson being the player he looked like he would become after the 2007 season. Good value opportunity in redraft, however.
Derrick Harvey is the classic cautionary tale about holding out. I like both he and Quentin Groves to progress nicely this year.
I like Rod Marinelli being able to reclaim Mark Anderson's potential. The guy is available on almost every waiver wire, and I wouldn't waste a roster spot heading in to the season, but if he has a good opener, I'd try to snatch him up Week One. I also like Marinellis to squeeze a double-digit sack season out of Alex Brown. Brown gets held as much as any end in the league, but doesn't get the calls. Marinelli should be able to teach him a few new tricks that put him over the top.

In reeeaaallly deep leagues (32 teams w/ 40 man rosters) what does everyone think about this Jamaal Westerman guy? Obviously as a UDFA out of Rutgers, he may not have a good chance of producing this year. But the guy is the 2nd leading sacker in Rutgers history and I like Ryan's track record in letting the producers play regardless of draft status. He's got nice measurables at 6'3" 265 lbs

I agree with Tenacious D on Everette Brown. I think he could be a nice surprise in redraft leagues.
If Bunkley or Patterson go down for the Eagles, i think Trevor Laws will be a stud for DT required leagues.

Dynasty owners keep an eye on William Hayes (Tennessee). A small school player (Winston-Salem State) who the Titans traded up in the fourth round in 2008 to get. Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn is very good at developing young talent. May still be a year or two away.
Never quick to offer kudos unless earned, Washburn said earlier this month that Hayes is vastly improved from where he was at the end of last season.
"He's not thinking anymore," Washburn said of Hayes. "He's just playing. He's figured that much out."
"Will is coming into his own," Jones said. "Last year, it was kind of rough. It was rough for me (too), but it was probably rougher for him, coming from where he came from. The second year for Will is going to be a big year for him."
Titans Coach Jeff Fisher is taking a wait-and-see approach to Hayes. Defensive line is one of the hardest positions to grade during the offseason because there is so little game-type contact, he said.
"When the pads go on, I think we can make a more fair evaluation," Fisher said. "But clearly, he and Jason have taken the steps we expected them to take. They've gotten stronger and they've worked a lot with Wash in the offseason program."

Jimmy Wilkerson is a guy I think will emerge. He left Oklahoma early because he had a family to support. He seemed undersized and raw in KC after being a late round selection. After the five sacks last season (with only 1.5 going into 2008), he seems primed to break out. His personal/family situation is why he felt he had to leave school early. Many thought he could be a Top 100 selection if he waited a year. In college, speed was his big asset.

Two to consider:
Detroit's Cliff Avril - The former LB is a good athlete who is getting looks at both DE spots. He flashed talent as a rookie and I think he's someone that could eventually follow in the path of a Justin Tuck (another former LB). It depends on how good of a coaching staff and peers Avril will have around him during his development. Obviously, it's not as good as Tuck's crew when he was learning, but Avril could develop into a solid player.
Any of the young DEs playing on the opposite end of a healthy Kyle Vanden Bosch - whether it's Hayes or Ball.

Ellis and Burgess are both LE guys.Scott appears to have the RE spot all to himself. He might find himself in the rotation with Jay Richardson, but if he can hold up vs. the run (a legit question) he will get most of the action.

I have paid zero attention to him since draft day 2008, but he was completely over matched his Sr. season at Miami when he became the focal point of the defense. Perhaps OC's over look him in the short term and Campbell has some mild success in the near term as he primarily deals with one-on-one battles (although I would be betting against him having success) but his long term ceiling's very low imho.

Another guy I like is Mark Anderson. Tenecious D mentioned him in an earlier post and I like him for the same reason . He's a forgotten man, I can see coach Marinelli gettin' this guy back on track. Marinelli is an innovative instructor in the finer points of technique, leverage and balance.
In Tampa, under Marinelli, defensive lineman ranked in the league’s Top 15 in sacks on eight occasions and in the Top 10 six times. His Tampa Bay defensive line played a major role in setting an NFL record for consecutive games with a sack (69) from 1999-03. Truly one if not the best D Line coach in the game.

Of the late round prospects Ive been very impressed with Sidbury, Barwin, and Nick Reed so far. Barwin and Reed have sacks in both their games so far, and Sidbury had a nice 2nd game. I know it's preseason, and Reed (in particular) is facing 2nd team defenses...but he's also getting a lot of press. NFL TV interviewed him after the last game, and the Seattle papers are covering him reguarly.

2nd round pick of the Ravens, has looked solid in the preseason thus far, and getting a load of playing time.
Wearing Michael McCrary's old # with pride... he's worth the look on what is quickly becoming the #1 defense in the league (move over Steelers, we'll have your number this year!)

I thought Campbell looked pretty good the other night. I just watched a couple of series, but he got some pressure and seemed to be getting a push into the backfield most every snap.How many snaps would he see in the 4-3 as opposed to the 3-4?
