Passed on a menu option yesterday that makes a hamburger bun out of two grill cheese sandwiches.
Patty melt with two extra slices of bread? pass
And more cheese, presumably. Also came with a fried egg, but I digress. ETA: having four grilled sides of bread is not the same as two found on a patty melt, which should be significant; don't know though, yet.

I'm tempted to breed this idea with a BLT and a grill pan/press.

I'm not a big fan of sloppy Joe but my kids like it,  so we have it usually once every week or two.

For me,  I take a burger bun,  toast it,  lay it on the plate.  Then American cheese,  sloppy Joe,  another slice of cheese,  top with whatever hot sauce I'm feeling like at the moment.  Eat open-faced with a knife and fork.

I've never added pickle but based on this thread,  I may try it next time. Dill pickle,  of course.

Not a fan of sloppy joes either.

Much better use for the burger... brown it, throw it in a bowl, mix in some mustard and ketchup (more ketchup than mustard, should end up kind of orangish color).  Put on open face bun, sprinkle very heavily with Italian Seasoning, top with grated mozarella and cheddar or colby.  Cook in oven to melt cheese, then about 45 seconds under the broiler to slightly crisp the bun. We called them pizza burgers, end up with a somewhat pizza taste from the seasoning.  They also are great reheated.

I decided to reheat some venison sloppy joe for lunch and randomly thought about this thread.  I slapped on a slice of american/swiss blend and.....

Golden Gate Sloppy Joes

  • 2 T oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped (about 1/2 cup)
  • 2 clove garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup grated carrots
  • 3/4 cup chopped mushrooms
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 T red wine vinegar
  • 2 T ketchup
  • 1 T molasses
  • 1 T worcestershire sauce
  • 1 t paprika
  • 1 t chili powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 6 toasted French buns
  • cheese of your choosing
Heat oil in pan. Saute onion, garlic, carrots and mushrooms until soft. Add meat and cook until browned. Stir in tomato sauce, vinegar, ketchup, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, paprika and chili powder. Cover and simmer 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Spoon over toasted buns, top with cheese and broil briefly until cheese melts. Makes six servings.

A few notes: I have been making this recipe for over 20 years now.  The index card I originally wrote it on is soiled and faded almost beyond recognition. I make it a little differently in that I usually use 85% ground beef, brown it first and remove it to a bowl before cooking the vegetables in some of the leftover grease eliminating the need for oil. I also add in about 1/2-3/4 cup of water because I like my Joe sloppy. This recipe easily doubles. Even though it says makes six servings, it's more like 4.  Just typing this up makes me want to start a batch.
