Smart Move - Jay Cutler (1 Viewer)

Out of Bears camp, Mike Martz is reporting to be "giddy" about Jay's footwork. He loves watching him drop back. Jay worked hard in the offseason on his mechanics. We all know Jay already has the strongest arm in the NFL. Jay has also lost roughly 20 pounds and is in the best shape of his life. Knox beefed up and has not lost speed. Williams comes in knowing the Martz offense. I am expecting (not predicting) low QB1 numbers from Cutler this season, from a QB who will be drafted as a late backup.

Joke all you want, I don't drop nuggets like this for the public very often. I gave this gift to the shark pool because of how many were down on him at the end of last season.

I would not draft my team around Cutler being my main fantasy QB, and i'm a cutler fan. I would take a shot at him as a #2. the Oline has lots of new guys and questions. I think later in the year they should play better, especially with Tice doing his magic.

I though olin kreutz was done 2+ years ago, and played mainly on his "leadership skills" and reputation. I'm happy with his years of service but he was a ping pong ball at center at the end. We had a high amount of sacks from the middle, and when we were at the goal line we could not punch in the ball.

we drafted Gabe Carimi, and added the extra tackle/TE a Martz system uses Matt Spaeth, and dumped a fat guy, Manumalena, that made lots of money, and a got rid of a TE that could not block and was wasting a roster space because he was not use to his skill set, Olsen.

Sorry...Martz gushing is supposed to mean what?

Didn't he gush all last year too? Even about Olsen?

the reports of Cutler are true and not just Martz's opinion, every report you read is that Cutler looks like he is in the best shape of his career.

ETA:

our new Center sounds ready

C Chris Spencer on his reaction to Mike Martz playbook: "Holy ****. Yeah, it’s a lot."

The O-Line is paper thin... I like Jay but I'm passing him up unless I get him as a late QB2

Just had to do it... :banned:

It is pretty obvious when a QB has terrible mechanics, and Jay Cutler is one of the worst in the NFL. We will know very quickly in preseason games whether this is BS or not. AND whether he can stick to proper mechanics when his terrible line is letting the flood of DL in.

IF, and it is a big IF, his mechanics finally are correct, he has a chance to be very good. But I highly doubt a QB his age with 5-6 years NFL experience is willing to change his mechanics after all this time.

It is?

Showed Cutler running some plays on Sportscenter this morning. He looks to be in very good shape...not looking pudgy at all. That might not translate on the field, but his teammates were saying the right things about him being a much more vocal leader as well.

Time will tell.

Legend of Mike Martz living still off Kurt Warner's wonders.. Martz wasn't the key to that success. Should be obvious by now...
You might want to check the offensive stats pre-Martz and with Martz of some of the other places he's been before tossing out a statement like that. Don't worry - I hate it when actual facts get in the way of a nice bashing too. ;)

While he is a good OC and can put up big stats...I agree with his premise that Martz was not the key to the success in St. Louis.

If I was Jay I'd be looking to add some muscle to my midsection too. Flak jackets can't do the job alone...

I was a Cutler fan when he was in Denver. It seems like each year that goes by, I like him less and less.

Chicago lost Kreutz who was the rock of that line.

I see more of the same for Cutler. Some exciting plays sprinkled in with picks, and getting laid out.

Cutler's problems have always been more mental rather than physical, IMO. Good mechanics won't help him make better decisions when he gets shaken up.

Kreutz was the team leader on offense but he has not been a good lineman for a couple years now. When your team has one of the worst offensive lines in football, getting rid of an aging and declining veteran isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Sounds like Martz is trying to build some confidence in his young, trainwreck of a QB
He's no Matt Leinart
How is Cutler a train wreck of a QB? Has he thrown his share of INT's? Yes. But when the other options are curl up in the fetal position, or throw the ball out of bounds and punt....you have to take some chances if you want to win. Does he get himself in trouble because he isn't politically correct and a suck up to the media?, yes. Has he looked to be in great shape physically? no---no excuse for that. Does he get down emotionally when he has to continually run for his life or pick himself up off the grass time after time? yes. I'd say he has control over how he reacts to getting smeared and losing....but has little to no control over his woeful protection.Football is a team sport the last I checked. Do you expect Cutler to be able to fully overcome the anemic blocking of his o-line and average WR's outside of say, Johnny Knox? Is it fair to take the "boneheaded plays" he makes out of the context of the terrible protection he gets and say "he's a train wreck" and "he sucks"? The Martz offense leaves him even more on an island, and when your misfit toys can't block and your receivers can't get open...are we to simply blame Cutler? Are there any other QB's that have his skill set and 1. Get knocked down as much as he has and 2. Don't have a 1WR to help bail them out? Is the problem really with Cutler, or is it with the expectations we have for him? The Bears need to protect Cutler and give him some more talent to work with if they truly want to see what he can do on a consistent basis. We've seen plenty of glimpses of what he is capable of when he has a WR1 and some time to get the ball down the field.~the devil's advocate

Thats kinda what I was wondering. The only thing I've ever heard about Kreutz was, he was a solid leader on the line. Everyone gets old.
Olin Kreutz may have left the team, but I can't get the smell of his taint off my hand.
@notjaycutler
I about pissed me knickers on that one!!

I think he is good for 40 TD's this year....

....if you include the ones that the other team picks off and returns!

Owned!

In your face!

Slap it high!

He dropped Chicago from 23rd ranked offense to 30th. Stats/facts not your friend here.

Situation dictated a change in offensive philosophy last year. Martz led teams are typically in the top 5 in passing attempts. Last year they were 32nd. I'm not sure it is accurate to blame Martz for last year's offensive lull. One need only look at Detroit to tell that Martz improves offenses. Whether his crazy offensive system actually helps the team is a different discussion, but it is not debatable that it improves the fantasy performance of QBs. Kitna had back to back 4k yd seasons.
