snap, crackle, and more SNAPS! (2013) - week 15 is up (1 Viewer)

I have watched every GB game so far and when Micah Hyde is playing the D is better. He is a good tackler and seems to have an excellent grasp of the D. Hayward has absolutely sucked, he cost us the game against the Bears (In MHO) with a terrible missed tackle and then lost his man on another big third down. Then against the Eagles he and both safeties looked lost and out of place on several plays. I hate to say I hope a guy can't play, but I think we will better if Hyde is playing and Hayward is back on the bench or if Hyde takes the place of a safety and House/Williams/Shields play the corner and nickel spots.

Not surprisingly, coach Mike Smith is pondering more lineup changes after shaking things up against the Buccaneers. He moved center Peter Konz to guard, then yanked him from the game after he struggled at the new position. Also, rookie Zeke Motta took over for free safety Thomas DeCoud, a Pro Bowler last season who hasn't come close to matching that level of play.

"The snap count will change," Smith said after practice. "There are some guys that deserve the opportunity to go out and play. They've been working extremely hard. We will let those guys that have had some production in limited snaps have an opportunity to go out and take more significant snaps."

Talib came out of the game after deflecting a pass intended for Steve Smith with 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter and did not return. The team announced he had a hip injury and the return, at the time, was questionable. … This was a game in which the Patriots were in their base 3-4/5-2 defense more than the norm, hence the high snap totals for defensive linemen/ends. Sopoaga had played 26 snaps in his debut, but saw his playing time spike to 40 because of the base-heavy plan. … The Patriots showed a dime look early and in a surprise had Ebner as the sixth defensive back over 2012 second-round draft choice Tavon Wilson. But that wasn't a big part of the plan as they mostly played nickel when in sub. … Hightower wore the green dot on his helmet, indicating he had the communication device in receiving the call from the sideline. Safety Steve Gregory, who missed the game with a broken thumb, had that responsibility the previous two games. … Harmon stepped in for Gregory and seemed to account well for himself in his most extended playing time of the season (47 snaps). He had played 125 defensive snaps entering the game.

Somewhat obscure, but where did Marquis Cole fit in for NE?

Would also be interested in Bengals DTs now that Geno is out if you've got that.

Did TJ Ward play every down for CLE? His numbers were really down this week.
Yes. 62 defensive snaps + 7 special teams snaps.

The 62 snaps is the fewest snaps that the Cleveland defense has played in a game all year. After 10 games, they have averaged about 73 snaps a game.

cole is basically our 5th corner

talib (hip issue)

dennard (out)

arrington -- got muscled out of starting job and bumped to nickel by dennard, suffered groin issue on monday, I believe

logan ryan - rookie

cole

I don't know if julius and welker make it this week, but it's highly likely we use a base nickel, and if some of those listed guys can't go cole pretty much becomes a starter.

I expect a cb/s either gets called up from ps, or signed off the street this week - pray for us

mccourty could slide back over to corner, but we already have gregory out, with harmon subbing for him, so I guess we'd have to have maybe ebner sub at the other safety spot, which I think they'd rather avoid -- ebner got 3 snaps in dime, monday.

pretty sure cole got something like a dozen snaps on monday, and my guess was that they were late game -- after talib left.

yeah, here it is CB Marquice Cole – 12 of 58

I think bengals dt is some kind of rotation, but I'll check it out

last year's 3rd rounder, brandon thompson, has taken the starting tackle spot from atkins, with domata peko holding down the other spot.

he had already been rotated in a bit the previous weeks, and got 74% of snaps in week 10, but only 45% this past weekend

gilberry spiked up from the 30s to 59% this week, and I think they might have been in some kind of dime about a third of the game because peko also only finished with 55%, whereas the previous week he mirrored thompson with 78%, and had been normally in the 60s when atkins was in.

harrison got a pretty good chunk this week, so maybe they have a 3-3-5 nickel rush package where he walks up to the line -- I think thompson's strength is more of a run stuffer than a pass rusher.

edit: apparently last year's 2nd rounder, devon still, has been out with a dislocated elbow, so he might have some rotational role if he comes back next month.

Hoping to see SEA Wagner in on a few more snaps moving forward. Nice game, but the more (snaps) the merrier.
yeah, I think there's a wagner thread around here with some discussion of that, and it's something I've been painfully aware of as a fellow wagner owner.

the problem is, I think you're likely to get about what you've been getting -- it's a victory if that guy breaks 60.

although, the run defense isn't the same, and they managed to pick up something like 75 snaps on defense this week, so maybe there's hope.

LargeMouthBass said:
oh yeah, he's an every snap guy -- played all 78
Really? Thanks, I don't know how one can play every down and only get 1 solo and 4 ast.
psshh....ask nick roach.

I really thought woodyard had a great string of match ups coming out of their bye, starting with kc, but I guess it didn't work out so well - looks like trevathan and phillips sucked them all up.

I have to go right back to him against the pats, though -- then next week I think it's san diego.

I honestly think Woodyard is still hurt. He doesn't look right. He used to be everywhere before he got hurt. Now he gets out hustled by Trevathan and others.

I agree 100%, WW is a tackling machine and he has very good speed, he looked so slow against KC. I really think he is playing hurt, nothing else makes sense seeing slow Phillips beat him to the ball.

Mitchell, who said he played the second half with a lower-body injury that will require an MRI on Monday, said the Panthers were in a cover-2 when Wallace turned an out route into a post.

“When somebody runs a post 30 yards downfield and they’ve got the time to throw it, it’s going to be a 1-on-1,” Mitchell said. “I don’t mind it at all. My coaches trust me to not let people make catches back there. That’s what happened.”

Wallace had five catches for 127 yards, but couldn’t come down with Ryan Tannehill’s last pass, which fell to the turf at the Panthers’ 1.

“He’s a fast guy but there’s no way I was going to let him catch the ball,” Mitchell said. “I’m glad we got the win. Obviously, in a perfect world I’m not playing hurt, for one, and then two, I’d like to be on top of that route making an interception or a knockdown.”

Mitchell wasn’t the only defensive back burned by Wallace, who signed a five-year, $60million deal with Miami during the offseason.

Wallace beat cornerback Captain Munnerlyn deep twice in the first half – for a 53-yard touchdown and a 57-yard gain that set up a field goal.

Munnerlyn said with Tannehill rolling out on a bootleg, he expected Wallace to run comeback routes both plays.

“It’s my fault. Everybody in the league does comebacks with a boot. I sat on his route and thought a comeback was coming, and he kept going,” Munnerlyn said. “From film study, I should’ve known my personnel. I know if I sit on his route, he’s going to keep going.

For the first time this season, the Cowboys broke out a dime defense, utilizing six defensive backs. It was somewhat out of necessity with injuries to Lee and Justin Durant. Safety Barry Church moved to the Mike linebacker spot and rookies J.J. Wilcox and Jeff Heath took over the safety roles with corners Brandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick and either Claiborne or Webb. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin likes to play zone, but the lack of a dime package caught the Cowboys' linebackers in difficult matchups. Facing some better passing teams down the stretch (Green Bay, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington), the dime package could be more of a featured defense.

Possibly the best performer was Jarrett Bush (23), who filled in as the dime back for the second straight game. He always provides a physical dimension, and his coverage has been tight, too. Morgan Burnett (80) spent the majority of the game as the eighth defender in the box, and on six occasions (four against Peterson) he came through with strong wrap-up tackles to prevent breakaway runs. Penalized just three times in his career, Burnett picked up a pair in this game, but his roughing call was ludicrous. M.D. Jennings (54) also tackled well, but he's limited so much by size. The Packers tried the heavier Chris Banjo (17), but he got destroyed by pulling TE John Carlson on Gerhart's 26-yard jaunt and was removed in mid-series for Sean Richardson (11).

Thoughts: For the past few games the Jaguars have done a heavy rotation at the safety position, mostly at the "free" safety spot, with Josh Evans and Winston Guy. They've also done a lot of "heavy nickel" with all three on the field at the same time. The Jaguars gave gotten good rotation at their defensive end position, especially at the LEO-end. With the addition of Ryan Davis the past two weeks, they've seem to run a lot more "bear" fronts and fronts using two LEO ends. In Ryan Davis' 17 snaps, he rushed the passer 16 times with a hit and a hurry on the QB. His addition has seemed to help spark the pass rush.

Chargers CB Derek Cox was benched yet again in Sunday's Week 12 win at Kansas City.
It's the third time in four games Cox has been benched. On Sunday, he gave up a 32-yard touchdown to Donnie Avery and then another 36-yard gain to Avery. Cox, who signed a four-year, $20 million deal in free agency, didn't play a snap in the second half. Even when Shareece Wright went down with an injury in the second half, the coaches turned to Crezdon Butler instead of Cox.
In the fourth quarter, Wright briefly exited with an apparent leg injury. Butler, not Cox, entered the game. Marshall already was playing for Cox, and Patrick was in the slot.
Coach Mike McCoy said Monday the team will be holding a job competition this week in practice.
Asked if Cox would return to his starting role, McCoy indicated that jobs would be up for grabs in the defensive backfield. McCoy would not say what players will be part of the audition.

First off, Kool-Aid Larry these are the most valuable post in all of the fbg forum. Thank you. Just some comentary:

Bjoern Warner is a backup at best. Don't feed into the hype. I meant to start a thread about him being a bust last week after hearing the audible.

Tank Carder had 4 solo's before halftime when he was hurt.

In my deep league K. Greene looks like a add, again... We'll see. I wish he played the middle while Bostic uses his athleticism on the outside.

D. Wolfe moving back to DT can be added to my wishlist.

yeah, I think warner is just subbing a game for walden's suspension -- he's probably back on the bench next game.

I was kind of surprised to see angerer only get half the snaps --- even in a blowout.

glad you like the thread -- I'll admit, I do it for myself as much as anybody, but I like to think somebody besides myself gets some use out of it.

I'm baffled why Sendejo did so poorly this week compared to others with all of those tackle opportunities. I do see the incompletion % so maybe that had something to do with it. I'm assuming he was in SS and Sanford remained at FS.

yeah, even if you knock off, let's say, 8 incompletions to bring it down to a more typical 17 it'd still be 86 snaps, which could be a league high on any given week, and backs touched the ball about 40x.

guess that's just the breaks

saw this in a blog

A typical example is Lacy's 10-yard run with 5:46 left in the first quarter. The Packers line up in the shotgun with John Kuhn designated to block off tackle. Shortly after the snap, Lacy notices that Minnesota has brought an extra man (Andrew Sendejo) into the gap forcing him to redirect. Without hesitation, he turns directly towards Sitton who has already locked up Kevin Williams and opened up a new hole for Lacy to run through
btw, at risk of jinxing myself, I'd take a good look at micah hyde (GB) as a thanksgiving spot play.

maybe gets some good yardage returning kicks vs det, and even though shields is probably back I'm hoping he gets some quality snaps against a team that should be pretty fair to a slot corner.

hopefully, house doesn't screw me.

A week ago, the Panthers didn't do that. Miami wide receiver Mike Wallace beat cornerback Captain Munnerlyn for completions of 53 and 57 yards. He had another where he was overthrown and he ended the game getting behind the secondary for what ultimately was an incompletion near the end zone.
Those plays were so scary that coach Ron Rivera opened the competition at both corners this past week, not naming his starters until Sunday.
Not even Munnerlyn, the senior member of the secondary, was guaranteed a spot outside the nickel position.
Florence was the benefactor, replacing rookie Melvin White at right corner in the base defense.

Coach Ron Rivera said on Friday the only members of the secondary guaranteed a starting spot are safeties Quintin Mikell and Mike Mitchell.

The Patriots had two different "base" packages in the game depending on the Texans' personnel. The standard base personnel had rookie cornerback Ryan playing over Arrington in the No. 2 spot opposite Talib. The other base package had a third cornerback over a second safety, with Arrington coming on in place of Harmon/Gregory. The 18 snaps for Arrington, who has been playing through a groin injury, were easily a season low. ... Even with Gregory returning at safety for the first time since breaking his thumb Nov. 3, he was limited in his snaps, splitting time with Harmon, who started. ... Because the Patriots weren't in their sub defense as often as last week, linebackers Fletcher and Collins saw their snaps decline when compared to last week against the Broncos. ... Siliga made his debut after being promoted from the practice squad Wednesday and split time with Sopoaga at nose tackle in the base 3-4 alignment, with Vellano and Chris Jones at the ends.

Green Bay --- Midway through Green Bay's 22-21 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Sean Richardson replaced M.D. Jennings at safety. For now, it's unknown if the switch will stick.

Richardson played well, particularly against the run. But on Monday, defensive coordinator Dom Capers indicated that this was more about utilizing a 6-foot-2, 216-pound safety against Steven Jackson.

"We haven’t made any decisions that way," Capers said. "I think both of them will have a role and it kind of depends on how the game goes. We felt at the time with having a big back in there and having Sean being able to step in there and play that, you saw him make a couple nice physical tackles up in there and supporting on the run.”
The only other injuries were to inside linebackers Jamari Lattimore (knee) and Brad Jones (ankle), who did not return. McCarthy said the medical staff "felt pretty good about Brad," though he didn't have information on Lattimore.

Analysis: The first-unit presence of Siliga, promoted from the practice squad two weeks ago, was notable. The 6-foot-2, 325-pound second-year pro started over Vellano (6-1, 300) as the Patriots prioritized taking away the Browns’ inside running game and appeared to want more bulk and power. Siliga, who also played over veteran Sopoaga (relegated to two snaps of short-yardage work), seemed to hold his own. … The single snaps that McCourty and Talib missed were in short yardage. … Hightower wore the green dot on his helmet as he had the communication device in his helmet to get the calls. … The Patriots didn’t run many nickel fronts, which is why Carter’s snap total was low. … Collins, the team’s top pick in April, is playing more as he’s showing up in the base defense and also in sub at times. His 55 snaps were easily a season high, more than doubling his previous top mark of 26 against the Dolphins on Oct. 27. … In the secondary, the Patriots played Talib and Ryan as the top corners in the base defense, but in the sub they removed Ryan and inserted Dennard and Arrington. … Gregory, in his second game back since breaking his thumb, took more of the snaps as rookie Harmon was slightly edged out.

The Titans did more rotating of linebackers in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos than they had in any other game this season.
Coach Mike Munchak said the strategy was to keep linebackers fresh against a high-octane offense. The rotation plan left at least one linebacker scratching his head, however.

Zach Brown, the team’s second-leading tackler, said he didn’t understand why he was on the field for just 38 of the 95 defensive snaps in a 51-28 loss.

“I’m kind of wondering myself,” Brown said. “You’ve got to keep your best players and playmakers on the field. That’s what you do when you play defense. You look at all the good defenses right now. They keep their best players on the field.”

Moise Fokou led the Titans linebackers with 65 snaps, followed by Brown (38), Akeem Ayers (33), rookie Zaviar Gooden (31) and Colin McCarthy (30).

The big surprise was that Gooden — who hadn’t made a defensive tackle while playing sparingly in six games — saw almost as much time as Brown and Ayers.

“We wanted all four linebackers (in addition to Fokou) being comfortable playing a series so we could rest guys, so they couldn’t take advantage of us maybe being tired,” Munchak said. “We did the same thing with the (defensive line), so it had nothing to do with how the guys were playing. It was more about the reps we knew they were probably going to have to play.”

Two questions for you, Larry:

First, Mikell is at 100%. I'm assuming he stays there next game, being he made plays. Did you get to see him?

Worilds is who Jarvis Jones is suposed to be lol. Sucks for me.

Cortez Allen is supposidly a big time tackler at cb.

I share Zach Brown's concern regarding his usage.

I've been conducting the Jamie Collins train. No one here that plays Dynasty should miss out on stashing him for next season. 100+ tackles, 10+ sacks and a few picks(he even played db in college) at DE/LB are on the table giving how gifted of an athlete he is.

As a Eagles fan I'm glad to see more Bradon Graham finally.

also

Capers stopped short of saying Richardson has permanently surpassed Jennings.

"No, we haven't made any decisions that way," Capers said. "I think both of them will have a role and it kind of depends on how the game goes."

Probably because a more pass-heavy Dallas Cowboys offense is up next. With more snaps under his belt and being a tick more athletic, Jennings might be Green Bay's best bet this Sunday. Either way, the Packers likely sent a team-wide message in sitting Jennings after the missed tackle. A problem in Detroit didn't linger against the Falcons — Capers called it Green Bay's best tackling game of the season. He counted only two misses.

And the coach also stood up for Burnett. All season, Burnett has received a strong backing from his coaches. That didn't change Monday.

Capers gave Burnett some leeway on the Gonzalez touchdown, saying Gonzalez stayed in to block for a long time and that the Packers could have helped Burnett by chipping the tight end.

"I thought he had good production. I thought he played well," Capers said of Burnett. "He supported up there on the run a couple times. We had a guy use up two blocks and he was free to the ball, so I thought he did a nice job playing the run."

Williams outside: Elsewhere in the secondary, cornerback Davon House was benched against Atlanta. The Packers used Micah Hyde as their nickel corner and moved Tramon Williams outside. Jarrett Bush played in dime.

"He's a more natural outside player, and we had Micah to give us some things from a blitz standpoint inside," Capers said. "You noticed that he had two or three nice plays blitzing off the edge. Of course Jarrett, he's been around here and he understands both positions."

Capers added that it's sometimes easier to leverage help toward an inside corner than one on the outside. Players can be isolated at times outside, hence the confidence in the veteran Williams.

"Tramon is a smart enough guy that if we need him in there from a matchup standpoint, he can go in there," Capers said. "We kind of like what Micah and Jarrett gives us inside because both of those guys are pretty good tacklers. You can use them in pressure. They can go in and tackle those big running backs."

If an offense uses its stud receiver inside, it wouldn't be a surprise if Williams tags along.

I didn't see either game, and I wouldn't be much of a talent evaluator in any case.

burnett got some good words from mccarthy after the game, and I have faith that the guy will do a good job if he's out there going fwd, but I just don't like the position for fantasy.

there was some speculation that this was a match up based thing, so the whole situation seems kind of sketchy to me.

I might buzz through the carolina game later on rewind, although I doubt I'll see much of interest.

and re: jamie collins -- I think later today I'll try to go through that pats game on rewind and maybe chart some formations, or something, if I can get an idea how he was used.

btw, at risk of jinxing myself, I'd take a good look at micah hyde (GB) as a thanksgiving spot play.

maybe gets some good yardage returning kicks vs det, and even though shields is probably back I'm hoping he gets some quality snaps against a team that should be pretty fair to a slot corner.

hopefully, house doesn't screw me.
i guess I jinxed myself because house screwed me and det botched a couple kicks -- but it might finally be time for mr hyde

I checked out about half that carolina game on rewind and at first I though maybe he and mitchell were rotating because mikell was the high safety on a few snaps, but he settled into the ss role most of the time, outside of the few cover 2 looks I saw.

he seemed decently quick to the ball, wrapped up his guy when thrown to, and darted to the ball carrier to make a couple nice stops at the line.

also, from watching mitchell earlier in the year I know they'll throw in a few safety blitzes, which they did, and mikell ran right around jed collins for a strip sack like a little osi -- he'll get a few blitz opps every game, I'm pretty sure.

he had this job 2 weeks ago against tampa but only faced 34 tackle opps on 47 snaps, which is pretty dismal opportunity, but got about 50% more play against the saints to pimp his stats a bit.

problem I see this week against the jets is that carolina might just snuff out that terrible offense and give him the same opps he had with tampa, although maybe he can get another sack.

Jonathan Babineaux started the game at RDE opposite Jonathan Massaquoi.

Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith was somewhat subtle about the demotion of Osi Umenyiora, saying he wanted to keep Umenyiora on a "pitch count" and use the veteran defensive end more as a situational pass-rusher against the Washington Redskins.
But Smith expounded on the matter a little more Monday when he talked about starting Jonathan Massaquoi at Umenyiora's usual right defensive end spot.

"Yesterday we wanted to see -- even though he's a second-year player -- we wanted to see how Jonathan Massaquoi could handle playing 85 percent of the snaps in the ball game," Smith said. "And if you look at the play count, that's about where he was."

Massaquoi played 58 of 67 defensive snaps while Umenyiora played just 27 in his new reserve role. Prior to Sunday's game, Umenyiora's lowest percentage of snaps in a game was 60 percent in a blowout loss at Tampa Bay. Umenyiora played 68 percent of the snaps two games ago at Green Bay

gooden replaces brown v ARI

Linebacker Zach Brown played poorly early against the Cardinals, which is why there was a quick decision to replace him, Munchak said.Brown started and played only six snaps, replaced after a 26-yard completion to Cardinals running back Andre Ellington. Rookie linebacker Zaviar Gooden stepped in and played 43 snaps.

“It’s tough,” Brown said. “I’m just trying to hang in there, get through the season. If I’m not going to play on defense, I may as well ask to play special teams.”

Asked if injury was the reason Brown was benched, Munchak said: “I don’t know that he got injured. They started playing some other linebackers and got in some other packages. During the game, I’m not quite sure how much he actually did play.”

Kool- Aid.

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this thread. It is awesome and a HUGE help to others in full IDP leagues. IT IS APPRECIATED!

Quick question tho, how come only certain players are listed? Would it be possible to follow more of the IDP players?

Seems like I only see 4-5 of my players listed each week, and i have a full IDP roster and play 14 guys a week.

Thanks, and btw, brilliant call on MD Jennings last week, glad i benched him.

well, it's kind of layered 'cuz listing everybody would be a pain in the ###.

so, my logic is that I started week 1 listing what I thought were the less obvious or more interesting, then as the weeks went on I noted the ones who had made a significant change, or who were just of what i thought might be general interest.

for example, dansby/washington are pretty much out there every snap each week, so i don't bother to list them --- also, I kind of skimped a bit on this last week to get it done quicker, but i think the notables are there.

in addition to leaving off the typical starters i ignore a lot of dl and just make note of some name players I happen to notice, if I feel the snaps aren't what we might expect.

my idp leagues are pretty shallow on dl, and we don't require dt, so it's not something I really have a clue about.

plus, you see so much rotation on those guys I can never keep track of who just played 40 or 60% last week, and your starting de typically might only get 75-80%, etc.

I'll usually just make note of guys like ngata, or if i see a starter like osi at 40% -- stuff like that.

so, if you don't see some guy in the previous 14 weeks it was generally just because they played about the same as the previous week, or about what you'd expect, or were just some 10-20% bit player that I didn't feel was noteworthy.

oh, and another thing I tend to note are the nickel guys just because they can change every week, and it's nice to have a history of the amount of nickel played against various teams.

I can skim through here, and see that nickel is common against det, but less used against sf, for example..

and I actually go back and reference this quite a bit to see who was playing in earlier weeks

Good info on Osi. I have to do pickups this week and was wondering what happened to him last week. Appreciated.

Winston Guy, did he play FS or SS, dude had a big game last week
more often than not he was ss, but they switched it up occasionally, and mixed in a few cover 2 looks.

buffalo running the ball 45x, or whatever, probably helped him get a couple extra tackles.

it was a well designed sack, as they sent a lb up the middle which drew the rb to pick him up, meanwhile guy timed it great and basically had a free run around the end.
