Quintin Demps is back at S over Stevie Brown. Not helping on that Wilson keeper, though...
thanks

Wonder if Demps was the one who failed to give the deep help on the Hawks scoring drive.

Almost started a new thread, but thought better of it.

Any guesses on Humber/Hawthorns this week?

Bye weeks and injuries have left me digging for scraps this week. It's either him or a pass rusher. No one else is playing the middle and getting a majority of the snaps, this week's injury report withstanding.

humber seemed to be a better run defender than hawthorne. he was an aggressive thumper. some of it was the matchup, of course, but i like humber.

Anyone know if larry asante is a full time starter in Oakland? He put ups nice numbers playing 99% of the snaps last week.

So....someone who has watched more Cardinals football than I have want to give me a "5,000 ft.-level" take on Alex Okafor?

See the lines from the past few weeks, see the snap counts from the last month. I'm intrigued, but haven't got to see/hear anything much about his deal this year. He's starting at the Will now, or Sam?

The cards play a 3-4 defense. "Will" and "Sam" are typically termonology for the 4-3 OLBs. Okafor is a 3-4 OLB, and has played both the ROLB and LOLB slots. He is young, so there is room to grow. If you are in a big play dynasty, he should likely be rostered. He shouldn't be touched in tackle heavy formats. PFF gives him slightly below average grades so far, in all 3 phases (vs run, pass rusher, coverage). However, he's only had like 400 career snaps which is low -- right now he's getting sacks based on the volume of snaps. He's got talent, we just hope to see improvement.

Yeah, I know they play a 3-4. The OLBs are still referred to as Will and Sam in many 3-4 fronts.

Thanks for the bolded though. That's the kind of info I was looking for.

Chip Kelly's first-round pick in 2014, Marcus Smith, has played in just 59 snaps this season.

On Sunday, when the Eagles were down by more than 30 points to the Packers in Green Bay, a situation that would normally be perfect for an active rookie to get some playing time, Smith did not see the field once.

At this point, it might be fair to ask: What gives?

"He needs to be more consistent from a practice standpoint," Kelly said Monday, via the Delaware County Daily Times.

Kelly has been hounded about his rookie all season. Smith did not play in either of Philadelphia's first two games and has never taken more than 18 reps in a single game.

Smith had a few opportunities -- injuries to Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans -- but Kelly hasn't shifted his opinion on the versatile pass rusher.

He was one of just three active members on the roster Sunday that did not play.

"He has to show the coaches that we have the trust in him to put him on the field," Kelly said

Dolphins LB Philip Wheeler has played just 75 defensive snaps since criticizing the coaching staff following the Week 6 loss to the Packers.
After calling out the coaches, one Dolphins player opined that Wheeler is "done here." It appears the Dolphins have certainly moved on, as they've turned to Jelani Jenkins and Koa Misi as every-down linebackers. Wheeler will count $4.2 million against the 2015 cap whether he's in Miami or not.

IRVING — Despite leaving Sunday night’s game late in the fourth quarter with hamstring cramps, Dallas Cowboys starting safety Barry Church was on the practice field for the team’s Monday afternoon walk-through.

“They didn’t want to risk me pulling them or anything, so they just pulled me from the game in the last minute,” Church said Sunday night.

Any doubts about playing Thanksgiving day against Philadelphia?

“Oh no,” Church said. “I’ll be in there Thursday.”

Normally, safeties Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox don’t come off the field much. But Church left the game in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Jeff Heath, who injured his right thumb. Heath, who played 10 snaps, took over Tyler Patmon’s responsibilities in the Cowboys’ dime defense.
At the end of the game, the Cowboys were using C.J. Spillman at free safety and Wilcox at strong safety.

Marshall suffered the injury when he collided with Dolphins tight end Dion Sims during Ward’s return and was immediately taken to the Broncos' locker room following the play. At linebacker Nate Irving is already on injured reserve for the Broncos while Danny Trevathan is eligible to return to practice this week, but will not be eligible to play coming off injured reserve until the Broncos Dec. 14 game in San Diego.
That will put rookie Lamin Barrow, who played as the second linebacker alongside Marshall in the nickel, for much of Sunday’s game in line for more playing time. Rookie Corey Nelson could be worked into some of the specialty packages as well.

Lions safety Glover Quin lined up in the slot more often than normal as Detroit used its three-safety nickel package with Quin, James Ihedigbo and Isa Abdul-Quddus. Detroit did that to try to keep New England from finding mismatches all day. "That was the thinking behind that," Quin said. "To try to hold up [passes] and the run game."

On an injury report released Monday because Detroit plays the Chicago Bears on Thursday, six starters did not practice and four others were limited.
Most notable on the list were three-fourths of Detroit's secondary. Safety James Ihedigbo would not have practiced with a knee injury and both cornerback Rashean Mathis (ankle) and safety Glover Quin (back) would have been limited.
The other players who would have been out Monday were defensive tackle Nick Fairley (knee), linebacker Ashlee Palmer (concussion)

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys are expected to be without safety Jeff Heath and defensive lineman Jack Crawford on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles because of upcoming thumb surgeries.
Heath and Crawford are scheduled to each have surgery on Tuesday morning, but the injuries are not expected to be season-ending. Heath would not rule out playing Thursday but admitted it is a long shot. Crawford's absence would open up a spot on the defensive line for Terrell McClain or Josh Brent to play against the Eagles. They were inactive in Sunday’s win against the New York Giants.

The Ravens shook up their personnel alignment at the safety position Sunday, but it didn't achieve the desired results. The defense allowed 383 passing yards and three touchdown passes during a 34-33 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

The Ravens began the game in a three-safety set with Will Hill at free safety, Jeromy Miles at strong safety and 2013 first-round draft pick Matt Elam at the big nickel spot.

Previously the starting strong safety, Darian Stewart played just three snaps on defense, a clear demotion.

Rookie safety Tre Boston played 29 snaps (60 percent of the total) compared to veteran Thomas DeCoud at 19 (40 percent). DeCoud made a quick exit after biting on a fake that led to a first-quarter touchdown. He played 100 percent of the snaps in the previous game against Atlanta. He only returned in the second half after Boston suffered a mild ankle sprain that won't keep him out this week

Rookie cornerback Bené Benwikere, returning from ankle surgery, played 81 percent of the snaps. Not all of them were at nickel back, where he was before the injury. He played the second half at cornerback in place of veteran Antoine Cason, who was benched after allowing a 17-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings with 16 seconds left in the first half. It was the second time this season Cason has been benched for missing a play. He played only 46 percent of the plays after playing 100 percent against Atlanta. If Benwikere gets the start as an outside corner against the Saints, look for Colin Jones to start at nickel.

ARLINGTON – Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church had to come out of Thursday’s game for a few plays in the fourth quarter because he injured his calf. But Church was able to return and said he’ll be fine for next Thursday night’s game at Chicago.

Church was hurt trying to tackle Philadelphia Eagles running back Chris Polk on a run to the left side late in the fourth quarter.

“When I tackled him, somebody stepped all over my calf with them cleats man, it hurts,” Church said. “I took a couple of plays off and came back in, but I’ll be straight.”

Cowboys starting middle linebacker Rolando McClain, who finished with seven tackles, also missed some plays in the game while battling a sore right knee that has plagued him throughout the season. But McClain finished the game and is fine.

ARLINGTON — Rolando McClain wasn’t himself on the field much of Thursday. It could easily be seen, as he struggled running and nursed his right knee throughout the game.

Asked if he felt OK afterward, McClain said: “Not at all.”

Added owner Jerry Jones: “He was sensitive with it, but ... he was able to finish. And that’s a good thing. But it did look like he was favoring his knee a little bit out there.”

McClain has been dealing with multiple injuries throughout the season, the latest being his knee. McClain wasn’t ready to make a call for his status on next Thursday’s game in Chicago.

“I don’t know,” McClain said. “We’ve got time to rest, so we’ll see. Pray for the best.”

I don't think that's correct. He threw up a crummy game. It happens. I think he's been pretty productive to this point.
he's pretty good, LB'ers do have these games time to time..............and remember he's a 5th round rookie completely taking over control of a horrid defense with alot of players not fitting Horton's scheme

Having 0 tackles playing all the snaps is inexcusable. Heck even I can get a tackle or two, they're just not trying hard enough.
um, yeah.

you're a defense that gives up a league worst 28 ppg. 2-10 record, with a 6 game losing streak, and playing on the road.

lack of effort is the least of their concerns.

Ummm... no, sorry you couldn't.

Saying a pro athlete is 'not trying hard enough' suggests a lack of comprehension of what goes into competing at that level. The other guys on the field are professionals getting paid to block too.

LOL... Offense I can understand but if you're playing virtually everydown and not getting any tackles? You're not trying hard enough. You're getting paid to make tackles. Any other job, you'd get fired.

There's a reason why rookie LBs that get their chances make tons of tackles, Borland for example. The guy's not the most athletic but he tries harder than anyone in SFs defense. So don't give me that crap about they're giving 100%.

As for sub-package involving rookie Nat Berhe that Perry Fewell talked about yesterday ... I'm told it'd be Berhe at WLB in 3-safety looks.
Giants' Damontre Moore eager for more snapsThe promising second-year defensive end will see increased playing time Sunday when the Giants face the Titans in Tennessee. He may even log his first career start with Mathias Kiwanuka and Robert Ayers Jr. done for the season and Cullen Jenkins still hobbled by a calf injury.

But Moore has not earned the trust of the coaching staff or an every-down role, despite the desperate need for a pass rush on the NFL’s 29th-ranked defense. In fact, defensive coordinator Perry Fewell thinks there is another "good question" for Moore.

"How prepared is he to be an every-down defensive end?" he asked rhetorically about an hour after Moore spoke.

"Again, he’s a better pass defender than a run defender. … We’d like him to play the run stouter than he plays it right now.

"I think he’ll be in a rotation. He won’t be an every down defender for us."

In other words, the Giants are really hoping Jenkins — who practiced on a limited basis but "looked good," according to Fewell — will be healthy to start opposite Jason Pierre-Paul despite missing the past three games.

Moore simply is not ready to be an every-down player, physically or mentally. But the final four games will serve as his audition for 2015 and beyond, thanks to the injuries.

Fewell wants to see more dedication from the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Moore in stopping the run and in the weight room. He is 17 pounds lighter than Kiwanuka and 28 lighter than Pierre-Paul.

Starting Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes barely saw the field in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos after he was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the second quarter.
If his dip in playing time after the call was discipline related, it didn't come from coach Doug Marrone.

"I wasn't aware of any substitutional issue," Marrone said after the game. "It was definitely not a discipline thing, at least from my end, from what I was talking about. I'm trying to manage the whole game. I'd have to go back and talk to the defensive coaches."
As a follow-up, a reporter asked if a position coach could bench a player without the head coach knowing.
"Probably no," Marrone said. "Not without me knowing about it, if you bench him."
Hughes, who has been combustible at other points this season, was upset on the field about a pass interference penalty called against cornerback Stephon Gilmore in the second quarter, drawing the flag.
"After that play, I just said, 'Hey, let's get Jerry on the sideline, let's calm him down, we can't afford to lose him. And then let's go,'" Marrone explained.

Galette returned to the game briefly in the third quarter, but he was noticeably hobbling down the field after running back Fozzy Whittaker during his 26-yard touchdown reception. And it didn’t appear as though Galette played again after that.

Lewis also did not appear to return after heading into the locker room in the third quarter, but if it was indeed just a cramping issue, he should be back for next Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears.

Pryor back in the lineup: Playing for the future, even though he probably doesn't have one with the Jets, Ryan started No. 1 pick Calvin Pryor at safety, benching longtime starter Dawan Landry. It was a passing-the-torch moment. Landry ended up playing a little in the second half, but this was a clear youth-movement decision. Pryor, who lost his starting job four weeks ago after showing up late for multiple meetings, worked his way back after three games in rookie "timeout." Ryan used rotations at all four positions in the secondary, giving it a preseason feel. There was one major breakdown: Darrin Walls surrendered a 56-yard touchdown pass to Charles Johnson, who had a huge day.

The Ravens aren't sure whether cornerback Asa Jackson is out for the season, which would be another blow to the depleted position. Jackson hurt his right knee midway through the third quarter after great coverage on third down. "I don't have a final word on Asa," coach John Harbaugh said. The Baltimore Sun reports that Jackson suffered damage to his posterior cruciate ligament. Without Jackson, Rashaan Melvin played with the first team in his first NFL game. The Ravens already have four corners on injured reserve. Harbaugh did announce that rookie safety Terrence Brooks (knee) is out for the season.

The 49ers have played most of the season without All-Pro starters Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. Another inside linebacker, Michael Wilhoite, left Sunday’s game but returned after missing one play.

During Wilhoite’s absence, the 49ers were forced to turn to their seldom-used “penny” defense, which featured Nick Moody as the lone inside linebacker. Moody and Wilhoite likely will start Saturday against San Diego with Bishop as the backup.
