SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (1 Viewer)

It's impossible for me not to laugh when they get going into this skit:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjsyIhKWr9s
Isn't that just fantastic?

Having performed in many skits as a kid with my cousins at family reunions, I totally get the POV.  This is a two-person song but you have four people to cast.  So one can dance while another holds the keyboard.  (In my childhood cousins troupe, I would have gotten the Fallon role).

Love Kattan's full commitment to the head back-and-forth.  And Fallon blasting out nonsensical keyboard sounds simply because the keyboard can send them out.

Probably my favorite.
Garrett Morris has a great set of pipes.  His lead is fantastic in that.

Watching these for the umpteenth time, I look for subtle cues or background stuff.  This time, I really noticed how the male background singers were.  Chevy was definitely too cool for it all, trying to make fun of the sketch while participating in it.  Danny was all-in, leaning into the mic trying to lay down a good doo-*** backing vocal for Garrett to play with.  John looked like he was caught by surprise and barely got on the stage in time after snorting.

I noticed the male background singers as well and my take was simply: Chevy can't sing so have him stand far from the mic and mouth the words. And Dan can sing best so he was on the mic most. And John was probably wasted.

I particularly like how Tracy Morgan just jogs with no expression... the entire time.

One of my Christmas faves, this skit!

Was listening to The Vulture TV podcast from a few months ago when Chris Klein was the guest.  Definitely true that he, Schneider, Kate and Aidy are pretty much the lead dogs now in the writing.  Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day also seem like they get a lot of stuff on in the Klein-Schneider reign.  Also Klein mentioned his affection for "sad" pieces (like the Mike O'Brien videos), which probably means that I should be happy that he is the head writer, even though I agree that Vanessa is under-represented.

I also heard it mentioned on a different podcast (ok, this is a sickness) that Pete Davidson was not on stage for the goodbyes, so he must have been off for the week or show for some reason.
Chris Kelly. Wtf.

Fallon high as #### in that skit.

Great episode all-around.

Strong showing for Beck Bennett as Shirtless Putin and the Helix 900.

Love, Actually is a holiday staple in our house.  So that Hillary short was a big hit for us.

Not quite as into hip-hop as I used to, so I was only tangentially familiar with Chance The Rapper.  Enjoyed his performances, thought he did great in sketches, too.

The Kelly/Schneider influenced showed on the melancholy side of that Christmas In Hollis tribute.  I'm guessing the Long Island Pageant sketch was their work, too: on-brand with the Experimental Theater Group and Crucible Cast Party.

I wonder how much McKinnon improvises with that alien visit character.  It didn't look like she was reading cue cards. Comes off like writers load her up with a few catchphrases and trust her to connect the dots. Smart to have the improv pros out there with her - chumps like Fallon and Sanz would have been falling over scenery from some of the missiles she fired.

My favorite joke of the episode was on Weekend Update.  "Winner of 'America's Got Talent: Electoral College Edition'."

Pete Davidson :deadbanana:

I just read that Jim Downey re-joined the writing staff on a part-time basis in November.  Maybe for Trump stuff, I would guess.

Really liked Jingle Barack because it was looked and felt so different for the show stylistically.

Somebody there really likes writing robot sketches.

Yesterday's show was horrible, even by current standards. The open and the princess sketch were OK. Everything else was crap.

Now, I was SERIOUSLY high last night, but I thought the episode was decent, and I am usually super critical.

Some terrible sketches, but then a few that made up for it.

The "dirty talk" skit had me crying... again, super high...

as an aside... is she hot or not? her voice is repulsive... but otherwise?

Yeah, was hit or miss, but had some funny moments.  Dirty talk was OK and the pizza band wasn't bad.

I think she's cute... looks like their new version of Nasim Pedrad

WTF? Was that supposed to be funny?  Or touching?  Jesus Christ pick one.

I was a huge fan of the skit where Kate McKinnon, dressed like Hillary, sang Hallelujah.  That wasn't funny, but it was incredibly well done, and quite touching.  It's SNL, so if you can't be funny, you gotta give me something.

This . . . this. . . . wtf was this?
It was wrong-generational, mostly.

To Sir With Love was a pretty big boomer moment, a racial story made more of triumph than struggle and a huge symbol that a black person could not only be tolerated but could contribute (it was down to that back then). There were myriad school field trips to see the film. I and most Lorne Michaels' age would get Obama-as-Sir(Poitier) because it was a very ' thx for trying' thing, but that's about it.

Pretty silly and, even then, dont belong anywhere in a comedy show. As I said in another thread, the only thing that takes the sting out of a Trump presidency is witness of how dazzlingly ridiculous is the opposition.

The jokes were good.  The delivery was poor.

Overall, the episode was so-so. The monologue was decent, and the bookworm sketch was the only complete bomb. I didn't mind the "To Sir With Love" rendition (aside from the pitchiness).  This isn't the news; I don't expect SNL to be nonpartisan.

Yeah, that Bennet guy, whom I never thought was very funny, seems to now have job security.
I'm sure we'll see something on KellyAnne Conway and this alternative facts skit that was on this morning next. It's going to be great SNL for the next 4 years.

Not  a regular viewer but tuned in thinking they wold have an inaugural sketch with Baldwin.  They didn't but I watched the first 20-25 minutes.   Man this show is horrible.

The worst part was the monologue though, what a complete piece of crap.   I don't know who Aziz Ansari is but he was about as funny as a heart attack.

It is well beyond time to pull the plug on SNL.
