SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (1 Viewer)

I still watch every week and I know people get annoyed by the “SNL is so bad” or “that skit sucked” so pardon me while I be that guy.  That fireman skit was quite possibly the worst thing I’ve ever watched on television - just brutal.

Black Jeopardy delivers almost every time though.

Lorne Michaels strength was that, even when a new generation of comedy came along, he could still approve sketches that he didn't 'get' generationally. It helped keep the show culturally relevant even when it wasn't particularly funny. Now it's neither and i suppose its because he's trusting a second gen of comedians he doesnt get and simply trusts because they're young when they arent really any good

Michaels is older now than Bob Hope and Ed Sullivan were when he began SNL, and only a few years younger than Lucille Ball and Milton Berle were at the time.

Cardi B is now on the official ballot for worst musical guest too. :X  Absolutely zero talent. Can a 20-something explain why I’m wrong here?

Part of the draw of the musical guest is hearing new bands you might not otherwise be exposed to. I could choose better bands that play at local bars in small towns. 

 
How can De Niro still struggle to read cue cards? He has been on the show more than half a dozen times. He kept stepping all over Stiller's lines, stuttering, losing his place.

More & more he reminds me of Neil Young, not recognizing that what he hears may not be as important as what we hear. At least Young had the bit in his teeth for a while at the beginning, so we got a few of his wonders without having to sift thru the inconsistencies of his beautiful madness

seems like the kind of guy who wouldn't play the white stripes songs when you go see him in concert....I could be wrong...

i didn't know that my director cousin knew JW from when he dated RZellweger and i suggested him for a role (off his brief, brilliant turn as Elvis in Walk Hard) when my cousin had someone drop out late from one of his films. it was months before he stopped laughing at my suggestion. cant tell the stories, but his genius is apparently deeply rooted in some legendary ADD

 
I thought that was one of the better episodes this year.  I thought Lobster Les Mis was pretty well-executed -- I'll admit to cracking up when the cast went behind the barricades and started belting out "Do you hear the lobster scream, screaming the scream of scalding flames?"

for some artists, music is about ideas more so than melody maybe. Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Can, Gong and a few other art/noise rock outfits traffic in this. Hell, Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices has made a career of melding both melody and idea together. for Pollard, this is usually good for about 2-3 minutes of a "song". it's one of the reasons he's so damn prolific.

This is a hijack so i'll try to be brief, because i'm on this subject a lot around here.

Human beings can afford to be the rapacious bugs we are because we occasionally spit out geniuses to lead & advance our salvation. It is best we make our geniuses understand that, at a certain level of talent, they can't be for themselves anymore. They MUST be for us so we may better be the damn fools we are. In music it is the A&R representative who assures this. I was one once - ruined my career trying to save a great musical artist from herself & protect her from those who wanted to make her the Next Janis Joplin (behind only Next Beatles as ultimate A&R imprimatur when i was doing it). I make the case that we all suffer more and reach less when our giants (in music, JW & Sufjan Stevens are the artists i most often cite) do not reach their potential to reach & inspire us.

The artists you mention are welcome to their noise in case they chance upon something. But the gods MUST be for us so we may be more than bugs. nufced.

Very few people know that SNL has a roster of standby A list talent on call in case current events derail the planned cold open   This week it was Stiller and Deniro.  Next time it could be Daniel Day Lewis and Carrot Top.

We used the FF button for that skit. Thought it was horrible. I liked the episode overall however.

she's still the go-to for tons of stuff.  I'm sure she will be leaving soon.  It happens with a lot of long-term powerhouse cast members by the end.  Let the new blood try to get more traction and also get a little more chill time.  she may be filming other stuff too and have less time.

 
Also why don’t we think Jack White reached his potential? What artists over the last 20 years has more kick ### rock music than Jack? Then we look at his non-rock work, work as a producer, etc.

When we were watching the Grammy's, my wife commented on how much Childish Gambino looked like Donald Glover, and I blew her mind when I told her why.  I should have just told her that she was being racist by saying they looked alike.

Because when you say "Hendrix" 100% of people born after he died still say "Aww, YEEEEah!" in response and, right now, in the middle of his career, when you say "Jack White" most people's reaction is ".....oh.....yeah..." Talent's the same

What's the point of digging up a 11 year-old pop culture moment for the cold open, with the payoff being Mueller as the Member's Only guy, and NOT have Mueller in a MO jacket?

I wish Luke Null good fortune.  His act didn’t translate well to SNL, but that doesn’t mean he’s not funny and talented.

Turns out I have just one degree of separation from Heidi Gardner.  Used to do a lot of business with the high school she went to in KC.  Her senior class voted her “Most Likely To Become A Cast Member On Saturday Night Live”.  

Chris Redd grew on me as the season progressed.  And that Wain/Showalter repertory group likes him a lot: they put him in the Wet Hot American Summer revival and had a speaking part in A Futile And Stupid Gesture - he was the guy asking why National Lampoon didn’t have any black staff.

Yeah, I've noticed him in a few things after the fact now, including the above-mentioned popstar

(which I think Bruce has said before he does, in fact, like.)

 
A pilot's call sign is very serious.  When an enemy sees me on his tail, I want him to feel the same way that you'd feel if a clown showed you his penis: confused, unsettled, and most of all, very, very scared.

Rest assured, if you see a a clown penis - me, or an actual clown's penis - this just ain't your day.
