Snowblower use at 6AM on a weekday -- Acceptable? (1 Viewer)

Well, based on a 3-1 vote I went out and did it this morning. Did my neighbours' walks as well to offset some of the guilt.

2.5" of snow for those who think that matters. Shoveling, it would have taken 30 minutes to do half the driveway and the sidewalk. Instead I did the whole driveway, my sidewalk, and my two neighbours' sidewalks in 20 minutes.

Hoping to not have a bag of burning dog #### on my porch when I get home.

Off to work.

Soon, a new pole:

When snowblowing, should I throw the snow back on the road to exact revenge on all the times those snowploughing MFers buried me -- seemingly minutes after digging-out the end of my driveway?

Why own a snowblower if it only saves 1/3 of the time? I've never owned one (spent 30 years in the north), always assumed they were for people with huge driveways, the almost elderly, or pretentious snobs.

Because the last time we got 15" of snow it took me over three hours to shovel and almost killed me. Bought the snow blower after that. Now I might as well use it.

2.5" != 15".

It saves more than that.

I'm just messing with ya servo. I was originally just referring to white collar jobs. And I don't care what time u use your blower. I live on a few acres. I can't hear anything.
 It's all good, GB.

Yeah I'm also probably overstating my shoveling prowess. But with <=2.5" of snow, I'm pretty fast. Any more than that things slow down markedly. Blower would be the same 20 minutes regardless.

Also this was my first time using the snowblower and had to figure it out. Could probably get it down another 5 minutes in future efforts.

you're right, I forgot the main category of those who get more than a few inches at a time. Sorry.

I'm just thinking back of people in Kansas or SE Michigan who had snow blowers, we never got more than a few inches at a time. It might have saved 10 minutes, annoyed the neighbors, wasted space in the garage most of the year and was generally just wasteful. Again though, old people, those with large areas to shovel/blow, or other reasons made sense. Those weren't the majority.

For me, it's closer to 2/3. Where my driveway meets the street it's on a bend in the street, so the slush from the plow accumulates in a nice pile at the end. I actually have to come out about 2 feet into the street in order to not have a 6" - 9" high bank of snow between plowed road and plowed driveway.

If you want to come over and shovel that mess, please come on over. I'll make :coffee: for you when you're done.

that makes sense.

there must be a line, or a gradual one, where the more north you are (or closer to lake effect snow), the more a snow blower becomes almost required.

I also never thought I'd have a riding lawn mower, but here I am with a few acres on a hill, with a riding lawn mower.

Amazing how terribly some people have missed the point.

The original question asked if it is acceptable. The obvious answer is yes.

The question was not about whether you can or can not physically shovel the driveway.

I could go cut the grass with scissors, but instead humans have evolved and invented tools. The fact that some of you actually view this topic as though clearing snow should be some sort of work out are just idiots. If so then you should also not own a car, lawnmower, or tools. Get a workout and stop cheating with that technology

My awesome snowblower saves time, saves an enormous amount of effort, allows me to sleep more, and does a much better job than shoveling.

Time is money. I don't even really need to pay attention to the weather. If I get snowed in I take 20 minutes to go clear the driveway. Seems a hell of a lot smarter than shoveling for 2 hours and being late to work or wherever else I need to go. Late to work = less money.

But, much like any other topic ever discussed on these boards, there are idiots and azzhole neighbors who do stupid and annoying things. If some idiot want to go snow blow his driveway at 4am after a half inch of snow, he is just an idiot and a bad neighbor. Don't blame the snowblower. Chances are this same idiot neighbor hammers things in the garage at 4am, mows the lawn on saturday morning at 5am, has dogs who bark all day and night, and parks 7 cars in his front lawn, none of which have engines. Don't blame the tools, dogs, or the cars.

if my neighbor had to get to work and needed to snowblow at 4am i would say hey more power to you and it would not make him a bad neighbor it would make him a dude who needed to get to work which is honorable and not something that he should have to worry about that is just where i come down on it take that to the bank brohans

maybe if you are a nurse then if you are late someone could be dead by the time you got there and that would be bad unless that dude was like really evil take that to the bank bromigo

So we got about 8" overnight.  By the time I got some coffee and made it outside at 7:00, at least 4 other guys on the street were already running their snowblowers.  Don't think any of the other neighbors were complaining.

This is a good point.  When it snows a lot, people have to do what is necessary to get onto the road.  I think 6 am is a totally acceptable time to start making noise when snow hits.  Like palmer pointed out, normally lots of folks are out clearing snow early.  It is not like I am the only one making noise when snow hits.  If I am out snowblowing early in the morning, it is likely that my neighbors are out snowblowing or have someone with a plow doing their driveways.  Driveway plowing is not as noisy as snowblowers but is still not quiet.

I wonder how anyone got anywhere before snowblowers were invented?  I guess everyone just sat in their house all day.
I wonder how anyone got anywhere before cars.  I guess everyone just sat in their house all day and pooped into their holes in the ground.

I assume you won't be starting up one of those cars with those loud engines in the morning since people did fine without them for thousands of years.

Snowblowing is not like lawn mowing or leaf blowing. Snow removal is essential. Anytime is ok.

I live in a snowy area where everyone has a decent size snowblower. It's not uncommon for several people to be out doing a midnight clearing - it all depends on the storms, when they end, etc. You folks that live in areas that maybe require a plastic one-stage machine twice a winter, yea, I could see you complaining and pointing to noise rules and such. Never heard of that happening here (upstate NY).
