Solo: A Star Wars Movie (1 Viewer)

He's a premier tactician....maybe the best the Emperor has.  But (according to the Zahn Trilogy) the Emperor is such a racist that he can't bring himself to have Thrawn as a visible presence in the Inner Core of planets (where humans are)....so he kicks his ### out to the Outer Rim to fight smugglers, mobsters and other scum.
This one is different. Palpatine sees what he has in Thrawn and he constantly gets promoted after every one of his out of the box solutions work. It’s the officers of the Inner Worlds that loathe him yet know he’s Palpatine’s Golden Child.

ETA: I see my book is written by Zahn; maybe it’s been retooled or I’m reading it differently. It has a sequel coming oof July 24th.

Timothy Zahn has written a bunch of Thrawn books.

The original (and often praised) books were:

Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command

That original trilogy was followed a few years later by a two book series:

Spectre of the Past, and Vision of the Future

=====

all the books above were labelled as non canon after the Disney sale.

Once Disney realized they wanted Thrawn back under canon, they hired Zahn to write a new story, called Thrawn, that was to coincide with General Thrawn becoming a character on Star Wars Rebels.

The sequel Thrawn : Alliances is coming out next month as you mentioned.

I saw that just as I finished Thrawn last night. The next book has him teaming up with Vader in a buddy comedy.

He's a tactician; he's a Sith lord. They fight crime.

I always saw Luke as a 16 seed playing a 1 seed pretty tough for three quarters before the 1 decides to blow their doors off.

Follow up question if you know the answer: If Disney wanted Thrawn back under canon, why not legitimize the original trilogy?

I am assuming they wanted the new Thrawn character to be more in line with what was shown in Rebels.  That is just a guess though.

I like how you focus on Memorial Day and ignore the fact that it was released 3 weeks after IW and 1 week after Deadpool 2.

And didn't the article say that the lead couldn't act? My eyes tell me different.

The article said there was turmoil on the set. That much was true. They fired the directors so, da-doi. But then it basically made a bunch of crap up based on that bit of fact to reel in a bunch of suckers. Didn't it basically say the movie was going to be awful? I could be mistaken. It's been a while since I read it since you know, I try to hit the back button as soon as I recognize click bait.
I think it was destroyed by the PR mess and people just assuming it was going to be bad.  I went in expecting it to be bad, but thought it was pretty good.  I don’t know anyone that saw it and didn’t like it.  It was certainly better than The Last Jedi.

The “money from selling new books” is almost certainly the right answer.

But a more  :nerd:  issue is that the old books are tied into lots of other canon and non-canon characters in ways that probably don’t fit with the new mythos they are building.  It’s been a while since I read them, but stuff like Leia being a leader in the New Republic government and Luke having a wife and kids probably would be hard to shoehorn into the new (inferior) canon.

To their credit though, Thrawn from Rebels and the new book remained more or less true to Zahn’s original creation.  I was pleasantly surprised by that.  (And am still amazed that the new allegedly feminist spin on the universe has been so resistant to bringing Mara Jade back into the canon...)

I haven't seen the character in the Rebels show (only seen a few minutes of one episode), but I remember the character in the book being really cool. Didn't he study a species art to determine military weaknesses and strengths?

Yes.  They don't play that up directly in the cartoon (maybe a little deep for younger audiences?).  They show his fascination with art, but don't tie it in with his tactics explicitly.

Though they do show him as a master strategist usually 1-3 steps ahead of his competition.

The art was one of the ways he was able to predict a strange species' moves and be ahead of them. I remember it being brilliantly done in the books.

It won’t, This is face saving posturing by one of his reps.  If Kennedy goes there’s no reason to keep this dud.  There’s no track record to steer into the skid with him, he’s toxic with the “manbabies” aka the only  people buying tickets to this based on solo.

Heres your spoiler alert... she will retire or move on to save face from being fired, the biggest face left there is JJ Who takes over, who I’m sure will be thrilled to have Johnson direct after he tore up the episode 7 foundation

well had nothing to do tonight so I check the local theatre for Solo......not there any more.....been about a month and its done already? maybe catch it a $1 threatre???

:hijacked:  I'm reading Thrawn which came out last year. It supposedly takes place after Solo. Thrawn is a Chiss from BFE in the SW Universe.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether he truly is a bad guy. Yeah, the Empire is full of politics, back-stabbing and the like. However, Thrawn's attitude seems genuinely not evil. He shows mercy and is not necessarily cruel and he's mentoring Vanto as he goes along.

Anybody got some information for me?

Pretty sure he's the offspring of Sun Tzu and Neytiri.    :grad:

I think the biggest problem Star Wars faces is that Disney doesn’t know which audience it’s making it’s movies for.  Is it the die-hards who read the books and have built and incorporated the mythology from other SW story telling mediums (books, Clone Wars, etc...) into their understanding of this ‘universe’.

Or trying to capture blockbuster lightning in a bottle by appealing to the masses who have lived in a world where Star Wars has 6 chapters (heading into 2015 & TFW) told over 4 decades.

For me, Solo was perfectly fine, but a month after having seen it, far from memorable.

There's no guarantee she's gone and no guarantee JJ takes over (I'll admit the former is much more likely than the latter).

So I still didn't get around to seeing it. This might be the first one I don't see in the theater (saw the Special Editions in the 90's).

It's not due to the reviews or anything. Just haven't had the time. It's sad realizing that something you've loved for so long isn't really that important any more. Oh well.

That's the way I am with the Incredibles 2. My kids loved the first one, but I won't have time to see it till the movie is out of the theaters. I've already decided that I will buy it on disk and be done with it.

Saw that the other night with my kids (they're 7). They loved it. I loved it. Great movie.

I might be able to pull it off late July. But after that, no way till mid August and there's little chance it will still be there. I might have to try to make that happen. Kids are 10, 8 and 5.

It's not like it must be seen on the big screen but it is a great movie.

My kids LOVE going to the movies. When we watch stuff like this at home, at some point it degenerates into two of them fighting each other (those three are boys), plus there's the added bonus of the 2 year old girl. So it's safe to say, my house, despite the big screens and amped up sound, is not a movie theater experience.

Finally saw it, I liked it a lot.

The score wasn't as good as most Star Wars movies and it seemed to drag in parts, but overall a very good addition.  Much better than The Last Jedi, maybe even better than The Force Awakens.  The acting was pretty good, including the guy playing Han.

Unpossible. That one report that nobody else picked up on said he couldn't act and needed an acting coach.

I finally saw Ant Man last night, which was very solid despite lukewarm reviews.  I know they opened rather comprably, but I was shocked to see, it looks like Ant Man will make over 100 million more than Solo, so I'm not sure we can use audience fatigue as an excuse for Solo.

That doesn't shock me at all, look at the last movies for each franchise.  Marvel does (and should) have way more buzz around their universe than Star Wars does.

This movie was HORRENDOUS!

Sat down with 3 other people... and after 25 minutes we were all begging to shut it off. Lasted 15 more minutes and we were laughing at it when we hit Eject.

I'm still stunned about how cringe-worthy it was.
