Some thoughts on Andy Reid (1 Viewer)

The guy is a complete fat slob. What kind of example is this guy setting for his team? Why don't you come to pre-season in game shape coach? That's the question everyone should be answering. Maybe he would be able to think clearer and call better plays if his meat head wasn't completely filled with fat!
Now THIS is the reason why I come here. Quality stuff....

-He goes after high character guys -He prioritizes the offensive and defensive lines in every draft-He beats the teams he should
-FredEx, Owens and Desean Jackson down? I thought the latter two were some of the best choices the Eagles have made as a franchise, but your claim just isn't that true.-True, but we've been awful at drafting skilled positions, for the most part. FredEx, Kolb, Reggie Brown. DeJax is the first to hit in a while.-Cincinnati and Washington?
10 years and all you've got is 3 players of questionable character? Patterson is the only guy I can think of that has gotten into trouble with the law, though I'm sure I'm missing someone. They aren't nearly as bad as drafting skill position players as everyone makes them out to be. Look at the wr position across the league and compare how the Eagles have done to other teams at that position before you call them awful. I still think Reggie Brown will turn into a respectable starter, Jackson has star potential, and Avant and Baskett are nice role players (though Baskett was undrafted). There were some huge misses like FredEx and Bloom, but that seems to be the norm league wide. At RB they landed an all timer and a bunch of slop, but haven't used many high picks. That's a real "what have you done for me lately" kind of attitude. Look at how he does historically against teams below .500

Andy Reid's success in Philly is well documented and he gets a lot of credit for helping to turn around the franchise. Since Jason listed the team's with the most wins over Reid's tenure, I decided to look at the success since 2005 (Post Super Bowl loss).

Reid has coached the Eagles to 33 regular season wins and 1 playoff win in the 4 seasons since losing to New England in the Super Bowl.

Most Wins, Regular Season (2005-2008)

Indianapolis Colts, Dungy - 51

New England, Belichick - 49

New York Giants, Coughlin - 41

Chicago, Smith - 40

Carolina, Fox - 38

Denver, Shanahan - 37

Seattle, Holmgren - 36

Jacksonville, Del Rio - 36

Tennessee, Fisher - 35

Tampa, Gruden - 33 (Same as Reid, but has won a Super Bowl)

Nine of those listed have won the same or more playoff games as the Eagle over the same time. Five have won a Super Bowl with their current team (yes, I know Shanahan's been fired).

For whatever reason, Reid and the Eagles have not been able to match their success from 1999-2004. The Organization is different. The scouting department is different. The coaches and coordinators are different. Wherever the breakdown is, it falls to Andy Reid to fix it. If the ultimate goal is to get to and win the Super Bowl, do you still have faith that Andy is the guy to get us there. Or does the organization need to make changes?

I think that will be answered for us in the next month.
I agree and I've said a couple of times in this thread that this post season is big in terms of restoring faith in Andy. He needs to take the team deep into the playoffs, imo. I'm sure this thread will be revisited Sunday night. Hopefully in a good way!

Good info, but it fails to account for losing the franchise QB to season ending injury twice during that time. It also fails to account for the mess that happened with TO. A top 10 record while undergoing those things, particularly when it immediately followed such outstanding success (therefore should have naturally declined some due to low draft picks and stars ageing), is not exactly a compelling argument aginst AR. It's actually quite the opposite.

Over the years I've found myself defending Andy Reid to my buddies and fellow Eagles fans quite a bit. Does he make infuriating decisions? Sure. Are some of his in game moves bothersome? Yep. Can his reliance on the pass at all costs drive you nuts? You bet. And while I don't dispute that Reid can be maddening, I also have generally said to my fellow Eagles fans that they should be careful what they wish for.

Before the Birds demolition of the Cowboys yesterday, I would say that at least 50% of Eagles fans I know personally wanted Reid gone. And if you listen to Philly sports radio, you would think it was 80%+ that wanted him gone. I suspect that some folks have backed off a bit on their Reid hatred.

But the fact is he's just completed his first decade as an NFL head coach. And looking at those 10 years, it's very tough for me to imagine that we could find a new head coach that would match, much less exceed, Reid's accomplishments.

To wit...

Most Wins, Regular Season [1999-2008]

(1) -- Indianapolis Colts -- 113 wins [11.3 per season]

(2) -- New England Patriots -- 110 wins [11.0 per season]

(3) -- Pittsburgh Steelers -- 100 wins [10.0 per season]

(4) -- Philadelphia Eagles -- 97 wins [9.7 per season]

(5) -- Tennessee Titans -- 96 wins [9.6 per season]

(6) -- Green Bay Packers -- 92 wins [9.2 per season]

(7) -- Denver Broncos -- 91 wins [9.1 per season]

(7) -- Baltimore Ravens -- 91 wins [9.1 per season]

But the next thing you'll notice is that the three teams ahead of Philly all have Super Bowl titles to their credit.

So here is a list of the playoff wins, by franchise, over Reid’s decade…

Most Wins, Playoffs [1999-2008]

(1) – New England Patriots – 14 wins, 3 Super Bowls

(2) – Philadelphia Eagles – 8 wins, 0 Super Bowls

(3) – Indianapolis Colts – 7 wins, 1 Super Bowl

(3) – Pittsburgh Steelers – 7 wins, 1 Super Bowl

(5) – New York Giants – 6 wins, 1 Super Bowl

(5) – St. Louis Rams – 6 wins, 1 Super Bowl

(7) – Baltimore Ravens – 5 wins, 1 Super Bowl

(7) – Carolina Panthers – 5 wins, 0 Super Bowls

(7) – Tennessee Titans – 5 wins, 0 Super Bowls

So in Reid's tenure as a head coach, he's won more regular season games than any other NFC team, and won more playoff games than anyone outside of New England. The absence of a SB victory certainly stings, but let's not forget it wasn't long ago that Tony Dungy and Bill Cowher were in similar positions. And guys like Jeff Fisher, Marty Schottenheimer and John Fox are still looking for their first titles.

My point being...fellow Eagles fans...even if we lose to Minnesota this week, just be careful what you wish for.
So now Reid's up to 10 playoff wins in the last decade while NYG, TEN, CAR and IND all our bounced already. Plus he's now take his team to 5 NFC Championship games in 10 years. Let's hope this SHUTS MY FELLOW EAGLES FANS UP for at least another year.

It won't. Even if they win the Superbowl, some of those Santa Claus hating fans will want him gone the first time they lose next year.

Sadly you're right. If we lose next week to the Cardinals, all you will hear is enraged Birds fans calling for McNabb and Reid's exit for YET ANOTHER NFC Championship game loss :( But since we're going to roll over the Cardinals, I'm hopeful that even my fellow Eagles Nesters will see the light.

Awesome win today by the entire team and staff. Looks like we're back on track!

I think it was another fat slob (at least before NutriSystem) named John Madden who said Reid will never be appreciated in Philly because he seldom SHOWS his passion for the game. You don't see him wear his emotions on his sleeve during a game; you almost never see him berate players (or officials for that matter). He doesn't like to interact with the local press especially when they attempt to stir up controversity. He just goes about his business and does his job in the best way he knows - which is much better than almost anybody else.

But Philadelphia fans are different: They want to see passion, they want to see anger, they want blood and guts. Reid refuses to play that game and so he will never really be one of them. I doubt that even a Superbowl will change that.
